rthpjm,
You are a genius, I'm not sure why but I had downloaded and changed the boot.efi to the Pike version, but the file size was back up to 605KB, I did not know about the usr/standalone one and changed both again, then rebooted and its all working fine again.

Thanks again your help is greatly appreciated!

Lee
Hello Lee,

No problems. :D

Glad it's fixed.

If you were using the Finder to replace the boot.efi files, it's easy to navigate to the "wrong" /System/Library/CoreServices (and /usr/standalone/i386) folder(s). Also the file in /S/L/C is often "protected" under Yosemite or higher, so you might try to replace the file, but it didn't work and you might just miss the error message. These are just generic points. If you're using Lion up to Mavericks to perform the change the "protection" of the boot.efi file is easy enough to change....

When users in this forum refer to replacing two/both boot.efi files, they mean /S/L/C and /u/s/i

Oh, some of the 10.11.x updates replace the two boot.efi files. (All of the combo updates will)
Knowing this, you need to be prepared to put the Pike boot.efi file back in the two locations.

There are two pieces of code that will try to automate the replacement. User @666sheep posted a version called capitanpikefix, and I posted Boot64. Boot64 is at post 1391 (with a link to the capitanpikefix if you prefer to use that).

Boot64 is designed to run with SIP turned on, whilst allowing the boot.efi files to be changed back to the Pike versions.

Capitanpikefix was designed to operate with SIP turned off entirely.

Today next problem came. Since update to ios 10, i can't get photos from my phone to computer. Send by e-mail is the only way. This is where I get while trying to boot installer. Progress bar will go to the end and then just freezes:
[doublepost=1476265654][/doublepost]And i forgot, it is the same hard disk, just erased, but it doesn't matter, because installer is on USB disk.
[doublepost=1476268811][/doublepost]I've got an idea about broken installer, and it seems to be correct. I've created new USB installer and now installation is running. :)

If you have used the pikify installer before, it will simply need to be re-blessed so that it will boot properly.

Wanted to report that I successfully installed El Capitan on my 1.1 Mac Pro. No issues with the guide on page 56. The El Capitan installer downloaded from the App Store was already at 10.11.6. Been running very solid for about a week now.

Also upgraded the hardware - 3.0 ghz quad cpus, flashed to 2.1 EFI, 32 gb ram, ssd boot drive, Radeon 5870. Will mostly be editing some old home movies with FCPX and do some app development with Xcode. I'm glad to be able to squeeze a few more years out of this once upon a time beast.

Hello fortiusfidelius,

Try re-ordering your Memory cards. On Riser A you have a pair of 1G in slots 1 & 2, and a pair of 4G in slots 3 & 4. Try putting the 4G pair first (in slots 1 & 2).

If that doesn't help, I noticed you have three 3rd party kernel extensions, Soundflower, WebrootSecureAnywhere, and Nvidia. The Nvidia extensions will be okay since these are for your graphics card. The other two though, do you really need them? I'd recommend uninstalling/deleting the Soundflower extension, this is audio, and unless you've kept it up to date is probably quite old (I used to have Soundflower installed ages ago, it helped with optical audio connections and 5.1 surround sound. I'm now using HDMI connectivity and surround sound works great with no additions).
You could also try to remove the Webroot extension. If you need that for a particular purpose, then temporarily remove it, test, then put it back.

If none of that helps, then you could be looking at replacing the 1G memory cards too.
As a final test, remove all your 1G memory sticks, and test for a while just using your 4G sticks (8G will be fine). If you try this, please do report back. I've got my suspicions that the 1G sticks may suffer the same incompatibility as the 512MB sticks.....

Thanks so much for the suggestion. I did reorder the pairs and double check the extensions by disabling them but so far it hasn't worked. It was really stable for several days and then this evening it has restarted multiple times in the past 30 minutes. It seems as if whenever the device is under any heavy network load it just crashed using that same error. I will try removing the 1GB sticks and report back.

Hi Laurent, I would just buy some more RAM - it is really quite inexpensive and will help run lots of apps and generally improve things. The "memory leak" if that is what it is, is easily fixed by investing in some RAM - a small price to pay to keep your Mac up to date. Yosemite is still Ok for lots of things though, so your call.

If you have another Mac you can install without the 12gb of RAM - look for info on Target Disk in this thread, for full details.

EDIT: Just read your post again, do you have El Capitan installed already? If so how did you get it on there? Target Disk? Have you got any 512mb memory modules in your Mac? 7gb means you perhaps have 2. These are known to cause issues so remove them and see if things run better. This will probably be the cause of your problems if you are currently running El Capitan. Also check the position of RAM modules - diagram is on the inside of side panel - they need to be in pairs of the same size.

Sorry for the late answer. I've checked the RAM with Techtool Pro, and I didn't found any error. So I've followed your advice and added 8 Gb of RAM (2x4Gb). After that, I've made a clean install of El Capitan 10.11.6 with Pikify and a migration of my data from my clone, and everything is running fine. No more computer crash for the moment :). I'm set for a long time now...

Thank you

Bon Soir,
nice to know it is working well. Did you also install Boot64 which should protect the boot.efi files in a future update? This may not be quite as important as it once was as Apple will probably not upgrade El Cap again having released Sierra. In the past security updates do not appear to have caused any issues. Just worth bearing in mind in case an update does appear.

Hi, I haven't found any reference in this thread to the rEFInd boot manager. I have a 2006 Mac Pro running El Capitan thanks to Pike's boot.efi and I have also installed Windows 10 on a separate partition (with bootcamp). I just wanted to know if anybody had tried to use rEFInd to manage multiple boots on a Mac Pro using Pike's modified bootloader.

Thanks !

Hmm. I have previously used rEFInd.
If I remember correctly, rEFInd is loaded/stored into the EFI partition (segment). I believe that it can be considered a replacement for the boot.efi file. I think (but I'm not certain) that the boot.efi is not called when you use rEFInd...

Just wanted to report something, for what is worth:

Successfully installed on a third Mac Pro 1,1.

On my Mac Pro, I originally installed with just 10gb of ram, besides everyone failing with bellow 12gb. On this last MP I tried, which also had 10gb of ram, it failed.

The actual difference between both machines is that mine only had sticks from OWC while his had 4 512mb from apple and the rest were OWC.

We swapped them out for some of my OWC sticks and stayed at 10gb (could go above 12gb but we wanted to test it) and what do you know, it worked! So it's either a problem with the apple branded sticks or generally 512mb sticks.

A bonus note: When he swapped out any stick with his 512mb+2gb config he would get boot errors quite often and he had to re-seat the memory couple times until it then booted fine. So there is some incompatibility issue for sure.

Hope this data helps :)

Thank you to everyone who made this so easy to do. I got stuck when I did not have enough ram at first but after reading enough posts I figured that out. My usb installer also stopped working after the first test install and I thought it had to do with the graphics card I had put in but I ended up just having to remake the usb installer. Everything works and I am powering a 21 inch LCD monitor and a 48 in LCD TV in 1080p only using the PNY Nvidia 9500 GT. I cant wait to try it with the GT 740 I ordered on amazon. The computer runs very smooth with the old 9500 GT from 2009. Thanks again!

Thank you to all the people that made this possible. Happy with El Cap. I'm on Social Security and very tight budget. Someone gave me a Stock 1,1 (2 gigs ram,256 meg graphic card,no wifi)

For less then $200 I dropped in more ram (16) 2- 1 Tb h/d's, Nvidia GTX 620 2gig GPU,and an Alfa AWUS036NH antenna (So I can suck up the free Internet from the bar next door)

Happy, Happy.. (I was on an old Dell 1501 single core laptop running XP) :)

I removed all of my memory from my Mac Pro 1,1 (El Capitan 10.11.6), except 2 x 2 GB DIMMS located in the upper riser card. After a restart, I loaded a few Safari web pages and waited for the inevitable... The Mac Pro crashed then restarted, similarly as you reported earlier. I then shut down the Mac Pro and installed 2 x 1 GB DIMMS into the lower riser card (6 GB total memory, see attached jpg) and restarted... The Mac Pro is stable for now after a few minutes of operation. I would speculate that you need additional memory in your Mac Pro. I would suggest as a minimum that you add another 4 GB and you should be fine.

As for a downgrade to Yosemite... My understanding is that the boot.efi v3.1 will work fine with Yosemite.

UPDATE: I bought 16gb of ram on Amazon for the Mac 4 4gb sticks installed them and the mac now runs strong and smooth no crashing or reboots at all. The ram is not matched the supplier through Amazon sent me 2 then another 2 separately but they thankfully they work just fine.

My son is running Steam games quite well I might ad using a ASUS GeForce GTX 950 2gb card I got at Micro Center. (Note The card is powered via the slot.) We did have a time finding the correct Nvidia drivers and CUDA drivers for this card on the Nvidia web site but they work just fine.

Thanks for everyones help!

Hello,

I have done my best to follow the instructions on page 56 #1390 using v12 and each time I encounter this same error:

A problem occurred when unmounting the InstallESD disk image
== This is very odd and does not usually happen.
== Close all other windows (especially terminal windows) and try again

I have followed instructions from other replies in this thread and have unmounted/remounted, powered down/up, etc. and I still see the same error.

I noticed one reply that said to paste this command in the terminal window and then post the results: diskutil info /Volumes/Untitled\ 2\ 1

hello ptlahache

Can you please tell me the exact command you are running when using createpikeinstallmedia...?
e.g.
Code:
./createpikeinstallmedia /Volumes/Untitled\ 2\ 1

(your Untitled volume name is a bit weird is it "Untitled 2 1" when you see it on your Desktop? Is it a USB stick, or is it a small disk partition?)

Here is the exact command that I used:
Code:
./createpikeinstallmedia /Volumes/Untitled\ 2\ 1

That volume name was automatically created when I formatted the external USB drive. It is the second partition on that drive and it appears as "Untitled 2 1" on the Desktop. Should I change it to a simple name without spaces? like Capitan?

Okay,

I'll assume you have not yet changed the name yet... If you have change the command below to suit
Code:
./createpikeinstallmedia/Volumes/Untitled\ 2\ 1 | tee /Users/Shared/debug.txt
Then please attach the debug file to your reply post, I'll take a look at it for you...

Installing Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.x with this pikify3.1 method is a two-step process

Step 1: Use the attached script and files, to build an installer volume, typically a USB memory stick, or a small disk partition.

Step 2: You will then boot off the installer, to run the installation process.

DO NOT be tempted to simply double-click the Install Mac OS X El Capitan on the install volume, you will be wasting your time. It will not work. You must reboot your MacPro and select the Install Mac OS X El Capitan volume from the boot chooser screen...

Once the installer finishes, you will have a working copy of El Capitan with no need to manually change the boot.efi files.

I keep forgetting to mention that this method also builds the Recovery Partition (Recovery HD) too!

Optional step: You can then choose to install the updated version of pikeyosfix now called CapitanPikeFix, or my Boot64 (both do pretty much the same thing), to allow you to run the Apple updates from either the App Store or from the DMG downloads. See the next post #1391...

READ ALL THE CAVEATS - memory, backup, fresh install, migration assistant, etc...

Use this if you have not yet installed El Capitan and you only have your Mac Pro available.
This is the installer (starting point) if you only have your Mac Pro to work with...

==============================================================

INSTRUCTIONS

Download the zip file attached to this post.

Unzip it.

You should have a folder named pikify3.1

In that folder should be a number of files, the script is createpikeinstallmedia. Keep all the files in one location. Some people have tried to use just the script on its own without the accompanying files and then come back for help because it didn't work. You can move the pikify3.1 folder wherever you please, just keep the contents of the folder together.

If you are not familiar with the Terminal and the command line, take a look at post #1569 it will probably help you.

Pre-requisites:

  • As per Peter's guide, you will need a volume that can be overwritten by the installer
    • This could be a USB memory stick
    • A small disk partition from one of your hard drives (not the disk that you intend to use for El Capitan)
      • You need to be able to boot from this volume
  • The installer volume needs to be at least 8GB
  • Your copy of 'Install OS X El Capitan.app' should be located in your /Applications folder
  • The pikify3.1 folder contains both the black and grey variants of the boot.efi file. When unzipped the boot.efi file is the grey one, if you want to change to the black background variant, simply copy the black one over the boot.efi before you start. e.g.
    Code:
    cp -f boot_black_3_1.efi boot.efi
  • It appears that MacPro1,1 and 2,1 need a lot of memory to achieve a successful install by this method. A minimum of 12GB seems to be required...
Usage:
  • Open a terminal window
  • Change directory to the pikify3.1 folder from the zip file. Let us assume that you downloaded the zip file to your Downloads folder and unzipped it there. (If you have put the pikify3.1 folder somewhere else, please alter the path to suit your location)
  • Change [InstallerVolumeName] to the name of the USB memory stick or your small disk partition. For example if you are using a USB memory stick and it shows on the desktop with the name Untitled, then replace [InstallerVolumeName] with Untitled so that the path reads /Volumes/Untitled
Code:
cd ~/Downloads/pikify3.1
  • You need to run the script as the root user
Code:
sudo -s
[your password]
./createpikeinstallmedia /Volumes/[InstallerVolumeName]

  • OR
Code:
sudo ./createpikeinstallmedia /Volumes/[InstallerVolumeName]
[your password]
  • OR (optionally switch to the black background variant before you start)
Code:
sudo -s
[your password]
cp -f boot_black_3_1.efi boot.efi
./createpikeinstallmedia /Volumes/[InstallerVolumeName]

Be patient, the script will take some time to run through to completion, especially if your installer volume is a USB memory stick!

Once the script completes it will print ### DONE PIKIFYING ### and you should have an installer volume named 'Install OS X El Capitan'

After you build your pikify3.1 USB memory stick, but before you attempt to boot from it, try ejecting it, physically unplug it, wait a few seconds, then re-plug it in allowing it to mount.

  • Reboot your MacPro with the newly created install media (partition or USB stick) attached
  • Hold the ALT key down immediately after the startup chime to enter the boot chooser
  • Choose the Install OS X El Capitan volume
    • For those people with graphics cards that don't show the boot screens
      • If you are using a USB stick (and it's the only one attached), then get to the boot chooser as above then press the left-arrow key once, followed by the return/enter key. (Removable media generally shows up last in the horizontal list, pressing the left arrow key takes you from the automatic first entry and wraps the highlight round to the other end of the list, which is usually where the USB stick is presented).
      • If you're using a small disk partition, the get to the boot chooser as above then press the right-arrow key once, followed by the return/enter key). If you have just your main disk and the installer volume this should work. If you have more than just those two, experiment pressing the arrow key more than once until you find the installer volume!
      • OR, consider getting hold of a DVI-vga adaptor. You should be able to find one of your DVI ports that will send out a VGA signal (to a VGA connected monitor) and show you the boot screen.
  • Your machine should boot into the Installer, run the installer
    • You may need to click the Reboot button at the end of the install (for some reason, the 10 second countdown doesn't seem to automatically start)
  • Your machine should reboot into the new El Capitan Installation and begin the OS X setup procedure.

I made a video! I hope you like it...

I used my iPhone for the second half, apologies for the moire patterns.

I decided to start from my MacPro running 10.7.x Lion, since this is the last officially supported version.
The only difficulty for people is to get hold of a copy of Apple's "Install Mac OS X El Capitan" app. I recommend using a newer "supported" Mac and then copying it to the MacPro....

One of the steps in the video shows me formatting my hard disk drive, do not do this step if you have data on your hard disk (unless you have a backup and are prepared to wipe the drive)

If you are upgrading I would suggest a clean install of El Capitan onto a spare disk, then use the Apple Migration Assistant to migrate your previous system and user files.
If you are brave and want to try an in-place upgrade, make sure you backup your current system first...

======================== UPDATE ================================

The original Apple BaseSystem.dmg appears to be missing a number of fonts. This causes the installer log file to fill up with thousands of unnecessary lines complaining about the missing fonts. I've updated the installer creation script to fix the missing fonts. It just makes the log file smaller and easier to read and follow.

See pikify3.1.v2.zip in the attachments...

==================== ANOTHER UPDATE =============================

I figured out how to set up El Capitan so that we can make it survive an Apple update. See my post at post #1391

I've modified the pikify3.1 set so that those changes are automatically applied.

I'll leave v2 here in case anyone is paranoid, and doesn't want the slight lowering of SIP's security blanket!

==================== Version 5 ===================================

V5 includes some mods to the SIP exclusion paths file

==================== Version 7 ===================================
(includes version 6, which added support for home-baked fusion drives)
V7 adds error checking and a bit of an explanation to start

==================== Version 8 ===================================
V8 adds a check to ensure there is a copy of the Apple Install OS X El Capitan application located in the Applications folder!

==================== Version 9 ===================================
All previous versions would first write the Install media, and then modify that content. If the Install media is a USB memory stick, all those operations are slow due to the USB bus speed.

V9 attempts to speed up the operations. It will modify the /Applications/Install OS X El Capitan.app on the hard disk first (faster), and then write the contents to the USB memory stick. There is only one write across the USB bus.

Plus, the modifications are left in place. The script will detect if the copy of Install Mac OS X El Capitan has already been modified, giving you the option to reset to the Apple version, or to continue. If you choose to continue it will skip the modifications (because they're already present) and simply write a new copy to your USB memory stick (or installer partition)

It should be quicker :)

==================== Version 10 ==================================
Version 10 adds a check to see if the InstallESD.dmg and/or the BaseSystem.dmg are already mounted, if so it tries to detach them.

WARNING: It seems some people have tried V10 and it has caused problems. I'm re-posting V8 whilst I investigate....

==================== Version 11 ==================================
Version 11 fixes the issues with v9/v10. Basically I made an error in design when I created v9/v10. The resulting files were too big to fit onto an 8GB memory stick. Sorry folks!!

If you downloaded v9 or v10, please rapidly place them in their new home (the trash can), and re-download V11, it will now work much better :)

==================== Version 12 ==================================
Version 12 saves the unmodified software in a format that makes it easier to restore. Also adds more checks. The biggest change is that the disk images are now mounted on specific mount points so that my script doesn't conflict with the default mount points.

Hello
I tried to follow the instruction but since I don't have an Apple graphic card I couldn't see the boot screen, and using arrows didn't help...
I have a MacBook pro running El-Capitan. Do you also have instructions how to use it to install El-Capitan on the Mac Pro?
Many thanks
Adi

Okay,

I'll assume you have not yet changed the name yet... If you have change the command below to suit
Code:
./createpikeinstallmedia/Volumes/Untitled\ 2\ 1 | tee /Users/Shared/debug.txt
Then please attach the debug file to your reply post, I'll take a look at it for you...
I changed the name and still encountered the same error, so I bought a USB stick and tried it again. Same error the first time so I started over with a fresh version of. the El Capitan installation app and it successfully created the image on the USB stick. I will try to use it to upgrade tomorrow morning.
