Do not overdo it now, even without the upgrade is still a usable machine thanks to El Capitan, the important thing in the future will be able to still upgrade safari and iTunes

I agree with @hatrack71 for security about mac pro 1.1/2.1, but personally I worked acec MAVERICK 10.9.5 until December 2017 and no worries with programs etc....
My passage on EL CAPITAN is the possibility to put an nvidia 980 GTX graphics card, and to benefit from the update of the 2 * processors X5150 by putting 2 * X5365 "SLAED".
Currently everything works except of course the famous SECURITY 2018-001 update. But will it have the same impact on the future functioning of the computer?
I don't know because I'm not developer just like the majority of users to perpetuate our equipment that is Mac pro 1.1/2.1.
We all hope that a solution will be found, In any case a big thank you to the MACRUMOR community and other BLOGS / FORUMS for the efforts and work done.

For a while anyway until it's just too out of date to be secure. No guarantee future updates to Safari and iTunes will all work either. And if you don't use either..it's irrelevant. Exploits are found weekly it seems anymore on all operating systems. Ubuntu is the next best choice for me on this machine in order to keep using it with my personal information. I plan to keep my Mac Pros a few more years. No way I'd run an unpatched system that long...even OS X. I am up to date as of a few minutes ago on Ubuntu and I foresee no problems keeping it that way but will report any problems in case others want to try it. Linux can certainly have stability issues but Ubuntu seems much more polished than even a couple years ago. It's blossomed into a stable distro for sure. It actually is quite a bit faster than El Capitan on these machines. One thing.. if you are going to install it.. remove all other HDDs with any OS and have only one blank drive in there. It works best alone without dual boot in these machines. I burned the iso to a CD and booted my install that way.

I personally don't really see the problem with sticking with El Capitan for the next while at least. It's pretty much right at the end of its own support cycle anyway - the most recent dangerous patch for the Mac Pro 1.1/2.1 wasn't needed for these machines anyway, so at most, we'll probably only miss out on two, maybe 3 future security updates. It certainly won't stop me from using El Cap on my 2.1 - keep your browser up to date and be careful of the sites you visit, and you should be fine.
Having said that, I've used Linux as my main OS on my laptop for about 5 years now and I would highly recommend Linux to anyone that wants to get more use out of their 1.1/2.1. If anyone's looking for ways to install 64-bit Linux distros on their old Mac Pros, have a look at this:

Linux distros are in the main very stable these days - I ran Arch Linux on my main laptop for about 18 months and never suffered serious issues with any updates. Ubuntu, Linux Mint are fine - or if you want something super stable, but without the most cutting-edge software, go for Debian. I ran Debian 8 Jessie on my Mac Pro 2.1 for a few months and it worked flawlessly.
Okay. So a member in the household applied the latest update, which replaced the boot.efi file. As I was trying to follow instructions on the forum to fix the issue, I also realized the entire hard drive has been, well, erased?
So I tried to reinstall (Seems it tries to reinstall El Capitan and not Snow Leopard) but the reinstall fails.
Any thoughts?

You didn't read the whole thread, that's my thought.
The reason the update kills the system is NOT the replacement of the boot.efi.
You didn't prepare pikified El Capitan installation media and re-installed the system on the dead computer.
You most probably of all erased the hard drive.
Try to restore from a Time Machine backup and work your way from here by hiding the update in the App Store and disabling auto-updates.
If you have no Time Machine backup, download the installer, create install media to boot from an USB flash drive or HDD, use the https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/boot-efi-developers-thread.1924434/page-33#post-22222642 tool to patch the installer for Mac Pro 1,1/2,1, make great effort to properly apply the updates that may kill your system again.

Does anyone knows how to force update Safari to version 11?
I had to reinstall El Capitan over an existing installation on my Mac Pro 1,1. My system is running again after a boot loop caused by the security update but now I'm stuck on an earlier Safari version.
When I look into software installation, system info shows that the latest Safari is installed, but when I check the version from Safari, I'm on version 9. Any ideas?

I had to install the 2017-005 update first. Then it showed.
Hi, I just joined today but have been lurking for ages...
I seem to be almost completely screwed here, and I don't really even understand what happened. I woke up this morning because my MP2,1 was chiming every 10 seconds. I don't know how long it was doing it, but that was the first indication that something was wrong. It must have had that %^&*ing update pending last night, and installed it when I shut it down to go to bed. I can't boot, I don't have any backups, and I don't have a pikified USB installer. I have no way to make a new installer, or even download the older update to extract the good kernel from there
It seems the only way to rescue my system is to reinstall, or replace the kernel, but, as mentioned, I don't have a backup of the good one so I'm downloading a pre-made HD image which I will write to another HDD and go from there I guess... how should I go about this? Should I go through the whole process of making a pikified installer and re-install the os, or would copying the kernel over work good enough? I want to just get it back to where it was yeasterday, then turn off updates completely and never let them wreck me again.

If you're downloading a pre-made image, why wouldn't you download El Capitan, pikify it and reinstall without losing anything?
I have no way of running OS X other than Recovery. Is there a way to accomplish that in Windows or Recovery?

1. Get (High) Sierra from, like wherever. You know what I mean.
2. https://saintlad.com/install-macos-sierra-in-virtualbox-on-windows-10/
3. Get El Capitan installer from, like wherever. The older, the better (I believe installers that are available now for download have the fatal update already baked in).
4. Use your virtual sierra to build a pikified El Cap installer on an USB flash drive (they never worked for me BTW, I used a small SSD on an USB adapter), use procedures approved by MacRumours Forums
5. Fire up the Pro from this USB flash disk, reinstall and choose your future updates wisely.
My suggestion would be:

Thanks for the advice. I managed to (surprisingly) fix it, sort of? In that premade HD image, I used hfsexplorer to extract the correct kernel from it, and copied it to a usb flash drive formatted fat 32. I chose to include the extra information when prompted, not sure if it matters. Then I booted to recovery and simply copied the file over in terminal, crossed my fingers, and selected El Capitan as startup disk... and thought I failed at first, because it took 2 minutes to do anything, then I got a blank grey screen for another couple minutes, and then THE OFFENDING INSTALLER SCREEN, completing the installation! After it completed, it booted to the desktop. I'm so relieved that something went so easy for once... hpwever, I don't know what it installed, the only things that show up in the "last 30 days" thing on App Store is iTunes and Safari, is it Safari that has the new kernel?

Those dirty buggers. Updates are permanently OFF on this machine now.
What configuration of RAM do you have? There cannot be any 512mb modules in the mix and they need to be in pairs in the slots shown on the inside the side panel. Is all the RAM showing in system profiler. Are there any lights on the riser boards indicating a fault with a module?
I swapped in a different video card (gts 250) and it worked. Just no efi. Still want to get the 5770 HD working. To answer your question, 4x1gb and 4x4gb
Could someone give me a hint on how to reinstall El Capitan without losing anything? I got hit with the 2018-001 thing, now my system is running wonky and I want to "roll back" to the last update before the (unnecessary on this machine) 2018-001. I have the "Install OS X El Capitan" in my Applications folder, it starts the install then says it can't verify blah blah and tells me to download a new copy, which we all know works totes mcgoats. I tried booting into recovery and doing the reinstall from there, it connects to Apple and NOPEs out. I downloaded pikify3.1 and when I run it, it asks where to install, am I supposed to select my main system drive? Is that how it works now?
I was updating the latest 10.11.6 2018.001 update. During that I checked the forum if any new hopes for Mac Os Sierra for Mac 1,1. I read what 2018-001 update has done to the users & immedietally cancelled it. Damn, it was so close.

I believe the issue with newer versions of osX is that they require SSE4 CPU instruction set, which the older CPUs don't support.

Fixed this issue btw, I flashed the original bios for the card. Previously I had flashed an efi version that was working with 10.7.
