Try a PRAM reset.
Reboot again
After you hear the chime hold Apple and R. It should enter the Recovery HD. Choose the disk to boot (Startup Disk) from the Apple menu
I reset the PRAM, reboot and held Apple+R.
It went to the el capitan install bar, followed by language selection.

I selected the language, and the same appear “el capitan could not be installed as it is installed already”

I then reset the pram again, reboot into my lion desktop and blessed the drive using the pikify app. Reboot and again “el capitan could not be installed as it is installed already”

Did i do something wrong or did i miss a step?

Try the PRAM reset....
Oh but if you do that you’ll need to re-bless the installer location.
You can do that manually (search for “bless” in this thread), or use my latest v1.9 app...

Sorry about my noobness...

I had already reset the PRAM so could have created the boot cycle issue. I can't find any "bless" reference in your thread - actually I'm a bit lost in merged posts so struggling to pin down my particular post and responses. I'm also not sure what v1.9 app refers to.

I've searched in 'man page bless' but the detail there is beyond my understanding... I really need step by step guidance for this.

I've unplugged my El Cap main drive, in case that might be influencing the boot up, there's now no response to Apple+R or Alt commands on restart. A reset SMC made no difference.

I have noticed any time I disconnect and reconnect the computer mains power it starts up on its own and attempts the installation process.

Much appreciate your input...

PS: I've discovered my mac keyboard cable extension had been unplugged so Alt etc is functioning.

"Bless" tells the EFI what file it should load on boot.

1. First you need to mount the partition that contains the .efi you like to boot.
For example: sudo mount -t msdos /dev/disk0s1 /Volumes/ESP
This cmd will mount ESP to /Volumes/ESP | "-t msdos" = type msdos because ESP is fat format
Check ESP location (it might be not /dev/disk0s1 at yours): diskutil list
OSX disks, USB Sticks, DVDs should get mounted by OS already.
2. Then locate *your .efi file* you like to boot and remeber its path.
3. Tell EFI it should load *your .efi file*
3.1. If ´*your .efi file* is on ESP: sudo bless --mount /Volumes/ESP --setBoot --file /Volumes/ESP/*your .efi file*
3.2. If ´*your .efi file* is on a HFS+ volume: sudo bless --setBoot --folder /*your .efi folder* --file /*your .efi folder*/*your .efi file*

In OSX SIP must be disabled, recovery might work without disable it first (untested)

Everyone has to start somewhere. Don’t worry...

Have a look at post #3472

That’s just a feature of this forum, if anyone posts two or more separate answers in a short period of time, then the forum software merges the posts. Just look for your login name in the banner. Also, there’s a flag icon in the blue banner near the top of each page. It often has a numbered red box that indicates actions (replies, likes, etc..) to your posts, call them alerts... Tap the icon if it has a red numbered badge, a menu will drop with links to the items that have responses for you.

I'm also not sure what v1.9 app refers to.
The Pikify toolset comes in two flavours. The original version was a “scripted” version. Scripts need to be run from the Terminal command line. The second version is a “proper” binary application. Apps are run directly, usually by double-clicking the app icon from the Finder.

I've searched in 'man page bless' but the detail there is beyond my understanding... I really need step by step guidance for this.

I don’t have an Xserve, and I’ve never worked on one. I seem to remember that Xserves behave slightly differently, especially if there are any RAID configurations, or Core Storage in use, specifically if the volume is encrypted.

Much appreciate your input...

Doh! Happens to everyone at some time!

Have attached the installer log if it could help.

I'm sorry, but I have no idea what causes that. I do not have access to an Xserve (and I've never used one).
Pikify was developed for MacPros. It could be a uniqueness from Xserves.

Maybe someone else reading this can help... Perhaps someone has been successful getting El Capitan onto an Xserve...

A quick Google reveals some other issues of a similar vein. All seem to point to unsupported graphics.

It's possible that El Capitan (and the associated Installer cannot properly register and drive your on-board graphics.
I don't even know if you can fit a PCI graphics card to Xserves of that era. Anybody?

Hello everyone,

So I'm back home from working away, and I've tested with a spare partition. I installed a fresh copy of 10.11.6. Updated everything except Security Update 2018-001. To make sure I was as close to a typical starting point as possible I downloaded Security Update 2017-005 from the Apple > Support > Downloads web site pages, and applied that.

BTW, once you install the 2017-005 Security Update, the App Store will present Safari 11.0.3....

I then allowed the App Store to update my test partition with Security Update 2018-001.

Yes, i did hit the boot loop.

I noticed it was "crashing" very early on (using verbose boot). I guessed the reason - there is no other explanation.

I made my modification based on my guess, and here I am with 10.11.6 and Security Update 2018-001 installed.

View attachment 748799

So what was my guess, and how did I do it?

My guess was that the kernel had been modified, and the classic MacPro couldn't cope with the modification (I see @hwojtek mentions "incompatible kernel" in a post above). A reasonable guess, since I had already downloaded the standalone Security Update 2018-001 file from the Apple > Support > Downloads web site, and opened it in Pacifist. Sure enough the file sizes differ between the copy in Security Update 2017-005 and Security Update 2018-001.

I simply booted into a different partition, I used my Recovery HD (which was NOT affected by the 2018-001 install by the way), and copied the kernel file from the 2017-005 update into position.

Reboot success.

Now I've also taken a more detailed look at the content of the 2018-001 package. There are a lot of changes, in particular a large number of the kernel extensions (kexts) have also been updated. Putting the older kernel back in place "might" cause some future instability/incompatibility problems. All I can say, for now my machine seems to be performing just fine.

If anyone wants to also try this, here are the steps:

Assumptions:
  1. I am assuming that your copy of El Capitan is working.
    • You have not yet attempted to install Security Update 2018-001
    • or you have reverted back after failing
Steps:
  • Make sure you have a second working copy of MacOS, because you're going to need it to fix the broken partition after Security Update 2018-001 is applied!
    • I used my Recovery HD, but any working copy should be okay - test it is working before going further!
================ EDIT ==================

FIRST STEP NEEDS TO BE:
  • boot from your other partition! Perform the commands below from your other partition.
ALTERNATIVELY:
  • Turn off SIP first
================ END EDIT ===============
  • Make a copy of of the current kernel file
    • Use the Finder to Duplicate it, or open a terminal
The name of my main partition is "Macintosh HD", change this to suit your machine
Code:
sudo -s
You will be asked for your password, what you type is not echoed to the screen so type carefully
Code:
cp /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/Library/Kernels/kernel /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/Library/Kernels/kernel2017
  • Go to the App Store Updates tab, and install Security Update 2018-001
    • If you have hidden the update to avoid temptation, unhide it
  • When your machine reboots hold down the Alt key when you hear the chime
  • From the boot selector choose your other working partition
    • If your graphics card doesn't show boot screens, try using a VGA screen with an adaptor, or use the arrow key to move left or right then press enter - if you hit it lucky you will choose a working partition!
  • Open a Terminal
  • Move out of the way the current (non-functional) kernel file - just for fun!
Code:
sudo -s
You will be asked for your password, what you type is not echoed to the screen so type carefully
Code:
mv /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/Library/Kernels/kernel /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/Library/Kernels/kernel2018
  • Now link to the 2017 version of the kernel
Code:
ln /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/Library/Kernels/kernel2017 /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/Library/Kernels/kernel
  • (The ln link command without the -s switch performs a "hard link", btw)
  • Reboot
P.S. if you can't see the boot chooser, but you do have another machine, you could put the MacPro into Target Disk mode, or pull the disk and connect to the other machine. Make the kernel change from there.

P.P.S. If you have an unrecovered "bricked by Security Update 2018-001" classic MacPro, then try to boot into another partition, or if you have another machine attach to that other machine as above... You can download the Security Update 2017-005 from the Apple > Support > Downloads web site pages, and extract the /System/Library/Kernels/kernel from there (using Pacifist or Flat Package Editor)

Last disclaimer - this really is a hack. The kernel is now out of step with the kexts and possibly other Apps. We really are on the ragged edge now. I don't believe we NEED Security Update 2018-001, however, this approach gives us all of the rest of the update, just reverting the kernel. If you are at all concerned, don't perform the update, hide it in the App Store....

This is for "zaawad".
What is the point of posting someones reply twice, and then not commenting on it or asking a question about it?
I'm only asking this because lately it seems this is becoming something that newbies enjoy doing.

I think this was by mistake because this is the first time I am using this forum, sorry for that and you need not to be so harsh on the newbies.

I tried a pram reset, still the same....

Have attached the installer log if it could help

P.s. I’ve recently seen some posts from others saying that they have El Capitan running on Xserves.
It might be worth searching with your favourite search service for “Xserve El Capitan”...

I suspect that they have taken a single HDD out of the Xserve, connected it to a supported Mac, run the native installer there. Before refitting to the Xserve simply replace the boot.efi file(s). Refit to the Xserve (make sure it is a stand-alone disk, not a part of an array). Try to boot from that...

@rthpjm I managed to get el capitan on my Xserve, however I never got it to install on it. I used a mac pro 1,1 to install it to a drive and then put back the hdd in the Xserve. The problem however is that I can't boot it due to a kernel panic in AppleIntelX8524Ethernet.kext, likely caused by my LOM to be broken. So yeah, I currently run 10.6 on it... :/ Never managed to get windows working either.

Try remove that kext and rebuild cache.
To rebuild -> bootup El Cap recovery in Mac Pro and run:
touch /Volumes/YourXserveVolume/System/Library/Extensions

Then you need to wait 5-10min. I guess. There is no process bar or anything. Dont worry, if you try to shutdown before it finished you just get a error that the drive is still busy :)

Wierd everytime i try the terminal funktion TOUCH Terminal says,
touch: Capitan/System/Library/Extensions: No such file or directory
i use the following sentence:

Last login: Fri Jul 27 18:43:00 on console
XXXXX-computer:~ cXXXXX$ touch /Volumes/El Capitan/System/Library/Extensions
touch: Capitan/System/Library/Extensions: No such file or directory
carsten-scholzs-computer:~ carstenscholz$

I have named the HD El Capitan, but for no reason the terminal doesnt unterstand the blank space of El Capitan that causes always an error message .. the second wierd thing was after i started the Systeminformations in the topic Graphis i found the following Driver Info:

Chipsatz-Modell: ATI Radeon HD 5770

Typ: GPU

Bus: PCIe

Steckplatz: Slot-1

PCIe-Lane-Breite: x16

VRAM (gesamt): 1024 MB

Hersteller: ATI (0x1002)

Geräte-ID: 0x68b8

Versions-ID: 0x0000

ROM-Version: 113-C0160C-155

EFI-Treiberversion: NO EBAY!! <<<<<<<<WTF!?!?! :-O

Has somebody seen this before? I Guess this is the reason why my system doesnt start anymore ..
IM completely stuck in this never ending bootloop. It Drives me Crazy ..

If you have a folder name with spaces u need to do "" between path to make terminal understand :)
try:

touch "Volumes/El Capitan/System/Library/Extensions"

Btw: That GPU EFI String is common for a modded bios with netkas files :D

Wow, thanks a lot, will give ist a try tomorrow :)
The Terminal command line (also known as the “shell interpreter”) interprets a space to be a delimiter (separating one thing from the next).

Whenever a pathname contains a space, you need to do something to make sure the whole path includes the space(s).

There are two ways of doing this, one is to put the path inside quotation marks as @Traace pointed out above. The other method is to “escape” the space character so that the shell interprets the space as part of the path (not a delimiter), you do this by placing a back-slash character before the space.

Macintosh HD would be written as either
“Macintosh HD”
‘Macintosh HD’
Or
Macintosh\ HD

If you choose to use quotes, put them at the beginning and the end of the path.
E.G.
/Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi
Becomes
“/Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi“
Or (using single quotes)
‘/Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi’

If you choose to use the escape sequence, then that same path becomes
/Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi

When using the Terminal, there are some cool shortcuts:
Start typing part of a path, then hit the TAB key to autocomplete.
At the point where you hit the TAB key, if there is more than one possible completion you will hear a bell, tap the TAB key twice quickly to see the possible completions, type to the point where there is only one possibility and hit TAB to auto complete. The good thing about this approach, is that the shell will automatically add the escape back-slash for you...
Eg. Type
/Vol
Hit TAB, results in
/Volumes/
Type onto the end
/Volumes/Mac
Hit TAB, results in
/Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/
Type onto the end
/Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Sys
Hit TAB
/Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/
Etc....

The other thing you can do is use the Finder to drag and drop onto the Terminal.
Open a Finder window, navigate to Macintosh HD, System, Library, CoreServices
Find the boot.efi file
Drag this file onto a Terminal window.
It should result in the quoted path

I have an update question. I'm guessing the answer is somewhere in this thread, but I was unable to find it in all the 170+ pages of activity.

I used Pikify to install a clean system on my MacPro 1.1 (Updated to 1.2), and it works swimmingly, however, the installer I used was for 10.11(.0). I'd like to update to 10.11.6 (I know I can't use the most recent security updates) but would like to be on a slightly newer system as that might address issues I am having with FaceTime. I have a 10.6 HDD also on this system for emergencies. Is there an official procedure for upgrading? Do I just install the update, boot from another system, and replace the boot.efi file?

Thanks for your input and work to keep these older Macs going!

Answering my own question, I dug through and found my answer I believe in this post.

I'm going to do the update, restore the EFI files, and see if it comes back up...

EDIT

I booted from a Snow Leopard partition and copied the boot.efi files. I had an issue with one of them because I kept getting an "operation not permitted" error, so I did a chmod +w on the target file, and then was able to overwrite it. I had to reboot twice as well. But after that, it came up correctly Yay!

@rthpjm I am pretty sure I can get my XServe '06 working on El Cap. I bought a simple gigabit network card which works for os x. I however still need to get SIP disabled, since my drivers are unsigned. (And I need to remove the X8254 Ethernet kext) So I will let you know when I get it working, shouldn't be too hard. Will try to install a nice and clean El cap tonight.

Nope.

I’ve done nothing to automate any of the kernel replacement. I think I was the first person to confirm replacing the kernel is possible, and supplied the steps. What I did here was motivated by the desire to help those people who bricked their machines to get them back without the anxiety of performing an OSX re-install.

For me personally, I prefer to stay with El Capitan 10.11.6 with Security Update 2017-005. It is the last Apple tested combination. For me, it’s too much of a risk to blindly install the 2018-00x updates. The 001 version introduced the incompatible kernel in the first case. Apple will not (and should not) consider backwards compatibility for our MacPro 1,1s or 2,1s.

What will happen when Apple releases a Security Update that introduces one or more incompatible kernel extensions and/or incompatible applications? Somebody (who will not be me!) will need to diagnose which are the incompatible files and then test if a downgrade will make the machine stable again. At this point you get into 1-n branching effects. Let’s say a kext becomes incompatible, if it is downgraded it might restore some functionality, but if there are other apps or libraries that were expecting certain responses, then these might become unstable after the downgrade. Ultimately, at some point in the future, the branching effect might mean that nearly 100% of the most recent updates would need to be rolled back...

Some people might argue that we’ve been modifying our Mac Pros for years without issue. Actually, all we’ve been doing is modifying the Pre-OS environment (boot.efi). The Mac OS X operating system has been untouched (kernel, kernel extensions, apps, and supporting files), until Security Update 2018-001.

Now, I can admire the courage of other users who carry on by downgrading the kernel and report back “works great for me”. I’m personally not going to do that, I’m more than happy to stay put at 10.11.6 + 2017-005 + supported app updates. Therefore, I’m disinclined to add downgrading the kernel to my toolsets.

Others have “filled the gap”... Contributor @alphascorp has posted an automation tool a few post back from here. For those wishing to go down this route, I wish you all the luck in the world. It’s simply not my choice.

My MacPro will be replaced in a years time (when Apple release the next machine). I’ll keep my cMP around, I’m going to turn it into a virtual machine host. I run lots of copies of Linux both professionally and as a hobby. The cMP will excel as a Proxmox VM host.

I'm going to follow your example :). I've tried to upgrade my Mac Pro rev 1,1 to the latest security release of Mac Os 11.11.6. Replacing the boot.efi by the one I had backed up before upgrading has done nothing. My Mac was unable to boot (loop). Luckily I had a clone of my system, so I've been able to recover it, but I won't try again :). I guess I'll wait like you that Apple release a new Mac Pro next year, but not for the same reason :). I hope I can find at this moment a good second hand Mac Pro 5,1 from someone who will like to make the jump to the new one.

Getting ready to make the jump to another Mac ... am I safe to use Migration Assistant with a new Mac as the target and my hacked 1,1 as the source machine?

Never actually used Migration Assistant and this will be my fifth Mac ...

It looks like you may have a partial installation.

Try a PRAM reset, then try again.

Please also boot from your rescue HDD again, find the /var/log/install.log file on the El Capitan disk. Post that log file here and I will check through it for you...

Thank you a lot! I tied to install El Capitan to software RAID. Now all is ok.
Great job!!!

But I still have one question - how can I switch off SIP? Command-R doesn't work (.

there
i had troubles installing El capitan on my older mac, a 2010 macbook air and a 2012 Mac min, then a person named Toni Tennille really helped me through the upgrading process , and today, they are running smoothly!

i did not have to shop around for other sources and she promised if anything goes wrong, she will Do That to Macs One More Time.
