Dumb question incoming (sorry!)... is this something Apple could address with software seeing as in many tests, actual temperature doesn’t appear to be the route cause?

They could change the fan curves. In my testing the CPU under various loads (i.e. cinebench) will still throttle _hard_ even at max fans.

Are idle temperatures that high normal? The whole laptop feels warm when in idle! This is the i9 with ~23C ambient.

Not at all, more about running simulations and or statistical analysis up to 40% faster. I'm confident that if Apple produced a notebook with this level of performance many profashinals including myself would own one for the same obvious reason.

Point in fact, it's possible to produce powerful notebooks that don't massively throttle or weigh in at 10lb...

Q-6

How come no one is doing it.

Max's reviews are the real deal... this is what I've been waiting for.

This guy is also gearing up to release a massive review and comparison with different editing programs, codecs in/out, and all thermal supervised. He's also comparing the different models, i9, i7s, etc.
https://twitter.com/tldtoday

It’s interesting to see the difference between the i9 and the 2017 and 2016 models but why is no one comparing the 2.2ghz i7, 2.6ghz i7 and the 2.9ghz i9 of this generation?

Any other fellow Unity devs on the thread, that have a 2018 MBP, any flavor? I'm seriously in need of an update - still rocking a maxed-out late 2013 15". I know any of the 3 models will crush what I have now, but I don't know if spending the extra $ on either the i9 or i7 2.6Gz will be $ thrown away. I'm curious if playing a large scene in Unity pegs the CPU/GPU, and whether throttling will play an issue when building a project in Unity or building XCode project.

I'm receiving mine in a weeks time. I'm also running on a Maxed out late 2013 - so I'll hopefully represent exactly what you're looking for.

I can compare the time it takes to build the xcode project from Unity, compile and install it onto device between the two. That would be an interesting exercise!

This guy does MBP 2017 vs. 2018 and the 2018 wins in this case. FCPX in 4K with 20min encode. The 2017 had Mojave on it vs. High Sierra on the 2018.

Is that Andrew Kramer from Video Copilot? It sounds a lot like him!

Is it possible that apple will fix it somehow? For example by software update? (so processor/os behaves better).

I don't know if I should go with i9 15"... if apple does not fix the problem I will probably go with i7 13".

I really do not think they can fix this by software update or optimization. So many gaming PC use thick body and many ventilation spaces to handle i9 processor, and Apple's MacBook Pro is aluminum body without any
air outlets.

Let's hope that Apple can fix this in a smater way.

Well, Adobe Premiere Pro CC just updated their software to support Kaby Lake on 10.13 and Windows. Is Final Cut Pro 10.4.3 from June updated to optimize the new i9 Coffee Lake or even the 8th gen at all?

Hardware-accelerated H.264 and HEVC decoding is now supported on MacBook Pro and iMac Pro machines with Mac OS 10.13.

Windows Intel Hardware Encoding for MP4/HEVC
Hardware acceleration is now available on Windows 10 with 7th Generation (or later) Intel® Core™ processors and Intel Graphics enabled.

That comparison would be perfect, 2.2 2.6 and 2.9. With benchmarks on single and multicore.

My friend is very satisfied with his i9.

I think this is the first time Apple made a laptop that throttles like this. I mean sure, it does happen , it´s natural. But not as low as now. I´ve seen The Razer Blade 15, that is a very impressive cooling solution on that one. Many complain that it´s very varm in che chassi, but that means the warmth get out! That is good!

I´ve always bought the top model on all my computers, I´ve tested mine 2,9 GHz 2016 model today at it almost never throttle.

As I said, my friend is very satisfied. But he use it as a personal computer. For many internet tabs, and sharing programs some video-editing. He never make the processor work hard for long times.

I think, the i9 will be very good IF you don´t you don´t do heavy load stuff for a long time. Yes, that is not acceptable.

In my case, I will keep my i9, if it´s any better than the i7 2.6. BUT if it´s worse, I will change.

I feel kinda sorry for Apple right now. They sell the most popular products in the world, they will always be more examined than others. I mean, you don´t read EVERYWHERE that the Dell is throttling.

The keyboard thing, now this... I mean, this will make people look at other brands. Windows, is never for me (except my gaming desktop) but some will look other ways. The Razer Blade 15 for example use vapor chamber cooling, that works like a charm! I´ts a liiiittle bit thicker. I would hope Apple do something like that. With some new invention (look on the cooling on the iMac Pro! Amazing!)

But Apple can´t make their macbook thicker, we all remember when the ipad got thicker, it was a huge thing in the media.
But i relly do hope that Apple make their laptops thicker. Or that Intel stops doing **** processors, and focus more less energy processorns that overclocked garbage.
