I wasn't going to. I really wasn't. Not because the new iMac is ugly (it isn't), or the M1 is only a toy, playing at being a CPU (it isn't), or even because of the lack of Apple logo on the chin (because, well, who on earth cares), but because my 2015 5K 29-inch hybrid iMac is working just as well as ever, and I run a few 32-bit apps such as Office 2011, Aperture, and well, other stuff.
But I was stuck this morning waiting for a slow train to pass my railroad crossing, and since it was 8.10, and there was nothing better to do for 5 minutes or so, I wondered if the new iMacs had sold out yet. This was a bad idea, because obviously, they weren't.
So I bought a blue 8Gb/512, 8-core. The RAM will be plenty, the 512Gb SSD is probably necessary, though I'll be adding around 4T of external storage, and I'll toss the keyboard with Touch ID away because I'll plug a mechanical keyboard in instead.
I use LibreOffice on my M1 MBA, (and Pi 400) and it does a fine job, so that will do for the new iMac too, and the rest of the 32-bit software will just have to get replaced. It was time.
The new iMac will look great, and save me a few inches of desk. It'll be especially shiny next to the Performa 630CD, but the Apple logo on that is rather tiny anyway, because there was a time when we didn't need a logo to know it was an Apple gizmo.
