Congrats to all of the new AVP owners. :)

Some notes of advice...

first, it took me about a week to really understand how best to wear this. The single-loop band was uncomfortable to me on first use, so I tried a few days with the dual loop band. But, after a few days, I tried the single-loop band again and have never switched back. I've just learned how best to place it on my head, how tight to dial it in (actually a bit looser than I thought I'd need). So play with it. At first, I was tryng to slide the single-loop higher on my head thinking that would remove more weight from my face. But actually I found that keeping it on the middle of the back of my head worked best to remove the weight on my cheeks. Over a couple of weeks I found the sweet spot and now rarely have the problem of discomfort.

About once a week I tend to need to recalibrate the eye-tracking to dial in the eye selection for small items.

I'd suggest an upgrade to the Beta 2.0 software. It's been really stable for me and I really like the new hand gestures.

Cheers!

The Apple one
I got the Apple one as well. Yes it’s £££, but it is very well made. I looked at alternatives, but they may be cheaper but had compromises. By the time I found a third party one that is was happy with, it was not much cheaper than the Apple one. After spending so much on the AVP I decided not to take any chances with the case.

I’m in love with my AVP already.

My god, the dinosaur demo is incredible. My iPhone spacial videos look great, subtle but definitely have depth. I played a bit of Super Mario Bros 3 on it using Delta then watched Terminator 2 on it in my own cinema! 😍

Going to test out the the Mac stuff today and update to VisionOS 2.

Anybody else surprised about the size of the battery pack? It is bigger and heavier than I thought it would be.
There has been a lot of talk on the mAh compared to an iPhone, however it is not a standard iPhone voltage, it is around 13 v I believe. This is why it has the non standard lightning type plug if you eject the wire from the battery.

Picked mine up yesterday and took someone along for the demo. For those who wear glasses and want the demo, they have prescription lenses there. They scan your glasses for the correct prescription and then bring out the demo device with the correct light shield and lenses attached. Well worth going for a demo if you can get to a store.

The Trafford Centre staff were excellent and there was no rush at all to complete the demo,

Thanks to everyone on here for keeping me company on the long wait.

I tried the demo and bought one a few hours later. Really couldn’t believe how amazing the whole thing is. I don’t think it’s going to be a great work device personally. But feels like iPad v1 for me: some good stuff now, probably great stuff/apps/uses soon. Watching 3D Rogue One last night, in the theatre, was great fun!

I can’t get the TikTok app to work, says not available in this region. But that’s probably good as I have life stuff to do anyway.

Has anyone had issues with the iPhone unlock functionality. I have looked at the instructions but cannot get it to work. Resorted to turning the watch unlock on.

Picked up mine yesterday afternoon. The first Apple person that I spoke to in the store didn’t really know what to do, scanned my QR code three times, and then went to consult someone. They then located one of the people who were trained in demos and I sat down with them. They were incredibly helpful!

They took my glasses and scanned them after first cleaning them with some lens wipes. They then got me to re-measure my face with my own iPhone. This was interesting as you scan a QR code on the Apple persons device, this then opens up the Apple Store app and tge measurement application. After you do this it then creates a new QR code on your own phone, and the Apple person scans this, and then someone prepares a demo AVP for you. The Apple guy was at great pains to stress this was so they both have no knowledge of my facial measurements or the extent of my eye prescription - both of which I wouldn’t care about (but I understand their position as it’s health information and is therefore sensitive personal information under GDPR).

The demo was impressive, especially in the well lit environment of the Apple Store (I found the pass through very sharp, but when I got home especially in the lower light my own unit was less so).

You do a brief setup for hand tracking and eye tracking and then the Apple person will take you through a few things. They asked what I was most interested in (cinema and video) so after doing some basic stuff around basic controls, photos, we concentrated on that.

The demo photos were really impressive - both the panoramas and the spatial pictures and videos. Having got home, I can confirm your own panoramas work equally as well, as did some spacial video that my brother shot at a family event a couple of weeks on his iPhone (he knew I was getting one of these). Can’t wait to see the spacial feature coming in 2.0. I’ve also looked at some older panoramas I have in my photos from much older iPhones and they also continue to look great.

We demo’ed cinema mode which was good - I put myself on the balcony and genuinely got a feeling of height! We then also looked at the immersive video demo. I’ve since done this again at home and I think the streaming video now is a little different - I’m a big NFL fan and there is stuff in there from the Chiefs Super Bowl win that I definitely would have remembered if it were in the store version.

After completing the demo we chatted for a bit while someone got my actual unit. They were really interested in whether I was likely to use this for business use (the answer being no - hardly anyone I work with knows what an AVP is and we are issued bog standard HP laptops!). We also discussed cases - I’ve already bought the Spigen case but he got me to open up and look at the Apple one. I got the impression that they are being monitored quite carefully doing these demos to ensure they cover these things (he also noted that when I was demoing I had the nose flap down (which I was fine with for the demo) but he noted that while i was in the immersive environments two of his colleagues had been gesturing to him to suggest I sort that out!!

Setup at home was easy - I put my own lenses in and the setup was straightforward. It took a few attempts to recognise the QR code but once it got there the setup is simple and intuitive. It’s slightly longer than the demo setup in store. Most of the rest of the setup is identical to setup of any other Apple product. Sync to iCloud was incredibly fast so my own photos were there and ready almost immediately, as were emails, iMessage etc etc.

I downloaded Disney Plus and tried a few 3D movies which are really impressive. I have seen a number of these films in the cinema in 3D but the colour was so much more vibrant without cinema 3D glasses. After the flop of 3D TV this is certainly the future of 3D home viewing I think.

Overall I am incredibly impressed. This genuinely feels like something new. To the extent I realised I’d spent a load of time just scrolling through emails - something I would never do on my phone!

Only downside at the moment is the lack of support for some key apps for me - Sky Go and BBC iplayer. Iplayer on the web looks fine and you can pop it out, but there’s no solution for sky.

Am looking forward this afternoon to trying it out for a longer session with the tennis on!

Oh and one other thing - the charge for the AVP is on the credit card now as a confirmed transaction, but the lenses charge has totally disappeared!!

Great to hear your experiences, agree completely on iPlayer and sky go, really hoping that they bring out native apps soon

Is anyone else on the fence with this?

All comments so far are very positive…
Just some cheap advice, do the demo. Then take a deep breath, maybe get a coffee and think about how you would use it. For me it’s a visual upgrade over my iPad just as my iPad was a visual upgrade over my iPhone. But think about what you would do beyond the first day/week/month. I was on the fence like you mostly because of the cost. But once I got it, I’ve never regretted the decision.

Some of my own favorite things so far, for what it’s worth:

Looking at my own photos and videos. I can open an Album from a trip and even the thumbnails are huge so it’s like a large wall of photos. Even 2D videos look amazing. I’ve started to shoot more 4K video knowing how immersive it will look when I get home. Spatial Videos look fantastic but are best for more up close settings rather than distant landscapes.

Panoramic photos deserve a special call out. There is no comparison to viewing them on any other device. I take a lot more panoramic photos now.

Watching movies 2D/3D movies obviously. TV shows are impressive too. I’ve watched some really old shows and enjoyed the juxtaposition.

Specific apps that take advantage of the device. I really enjoy the museum apps. Being a Star Trek fan, I’ve spent a lot of time in The Archive app.

I’m not a huge gamer but I have found a few that I’ve enjoyed.

Thanks for the advice.

I did the demo yesterday morning. Some things I was really impressed with, others I found a little disappointing.

I spent quite a lot of time in it yesterday doing some bits for Work. Sometimes it felt very good, others frustrating. I started to feel like I would be more productive with my iMac or MacBook.

This morning, I used it a for a little while and convinced myself it wasn’t worth the money, so I decided to take it back for a refund.

I went out to work for a while, then came home to pack it away. I put it on to do a master reset, but found myself doing some work emails and got sucked in. I found it productive again, so I’ve decided to give it at least a week.

The more I use it the more I’m comfortable with using it to dictate (which I am doing now). Annoyingly, the dictation does stop itself randomly. I am more comfortable with the gestures, specifically moving the cursor and highlighting text which improves things.

Does anybody else intend to use it for basic work tasks?

I would be interested to know why you have said you don’t think it is a great work device?

I tried to get TikTok to work too! Couldn’t resist.

I work at home, with my wife, child, three dogs and a cat. Being in my home, there are distractions all around. My main productive work is as a writer, and I have a very large philosophical project I’m working on.

A strange thing has happened with the AVP. I can no longer work on my project UNLESS I’m working in the AVP. The isolation, the sense that I’m in an entirely different realm, helps me to enter a flow state that is vital to my work. It’s to the point now that I simply can’t be productive on my laptop working in the normal world. Going into the AVP now means I’m going to work. Everything else in the world is shut out, and I’m immediately able to jump right back into writing.

I used to rent a cabin in the mountains for this very purpose; it was my writing cabin. But I had to give it up a couple of years ago. Now, I get that sense of isolation with the AVP.

So, more than basic work tasks, the AVP is now vital to the work I do.

Register your Apple ID on the Apple Developer portal and it should then appear as an option in Software Update in Settings - there’s no visionOS public beta planned currently.
I don't have a dev account ;-( Does anyone wanna add my VP?

That’s great! Thank you for writing that up. It’s amazing to hear that it has had such a profound effect on your work.

I have now worked out a way to get our VOIP business phone line to work on it too. This will be a big help!

I have been in it now for the past three hours or so, and I am thoroughly enjoying it. I think I must have just got buyers remorse because of the cost, combined with the learning curve of implementing it into work.

Does anybody know if installing the developer beta stops you from being able to return within the 14 day Window?

I got my light seal replaced today and things are better now.

When I was ordering it, the face scan would always give me a slightly different suggestion on each scan (23W, 25W, etc). I went with 25W but after setting it up, I kept getting the “your eyes are too far” warnings. I couldn‘t even set up Optic ID although updating to 2.0 beta did allow me to do that somehow. Besides that, the eye tracking was also a little inconsistent.

I went to the Apple Store today and they did another scan for me and it suggested 21W, tried it out and no more warnings! Will continue evaluating it over the next few days so I can be sure that the issues are fully fixed.

Glad to hear! I’ve also switched from 25W to 21W and enjoying it more - got my prescription lenses coming tomorrow so will see if that changes things!

During my demo / collection, I went from a 25W (which the measuring app recommended) to a 36W light shield, I didn't get the option to try on different sizes (which is what I asked to do), they had me answer some questions prior to bringing out the replacement.

I've been using the AVP with the 36W at home, but I get reflections on the lenses where the light is entering from both sides of the light shield. I've got a small head, so I'm surprised I've got this size having read other experiences. I'm going to go back this week and try another size.
