I read this thread and I'm in the minority apparently, because the 3.0 Jailbreak on the 16GB 3G does not seem to be effecting my battery life. I also am using the % battery life left sbsetting option, and everything seems to be working fine.

I SSHed into the phone, and ran top (you would need to install this from Cydia) to see the processes and nothing seemed like it was taking more CPU cycles or usage than I would expect. I've installed SBsettings, SSH, Terminal, Cycorder, and a couple of others.

I used redsn0w to perform the jailbreak, after I had done a complete restore (shift + Restore) in iTunes with the 3.0 firmware.

I'm with you. I just did a jailbreak with RedSnow, installed UltraSnow on my 16GB 3G and I too see no difference - so far in battery life. I just did the jailbreak today so I have yet to see how it will do overnight but so far so good. I have not installed anything using Cydia if this helps at all in figuring out what is causing the jailbreak problem.

So, it is almost 6 AM and I've had my phone unlocked since yesterday afternoon and off of the USB cable since about 7 PM. I took a bunch of pictures at a rave, made some phone calls, texted some messages and received/sent some emails and only 1/3 of my battery is gone. I wonder if there is connecting between poor battery life and the process used to jailbreak.

That is a good thread - it seems like Push/Fetch could be a cause. I have switched my exchange account to Fetch. I will monitor this and see how it goes...

Not for me, its all turned off. Push for apps, mail push...and the phone sitting idle overnight burns through 70% of my battery!

Tonight ill try wifi off and on airplane mode. Note, i've never had to do anything like this with 2.x. Overnight an unused iphone would show no appreciative battery loss.

I seem to be having similar battery issues. I just recently jailbroke for the first time so I've been playing around with themes more often (and, consequently, respringing often.) My battery seemed to be dying faster but the respring wiped the usage so I couldn't really be sure.

It just finished charging and after 6 minutes of texting (EDGE on, 3G,wifi, location, bluetooth all off) it dropped to 95%. Not an alarming number but an alarming rate. I'll respond tomorrow ( letting it idle tonight)

edit: push/fetch off. Sorry I left that out.

It only dropped about 3 percent overnight, so I don't think it's burning through too much in the idle state. Could SBSettings be the problem? I read another topic that said it killed battery life.

Mine is about the same as jb on 2.2.1. I browse the web a lot and tweet, however I don't use notifier, 5 icon dock or sbsettings.

i went through the hassle of resetting my phone completely. Then restored to stock, it seemed like the battery wasnt draining. I'm overseas so i unfortunately i have to jailbreak or i cant use my phone. So i jailbreak and did not install anything extra other than facebook and beejive. I charged the battery to full, when i woke up this morning it was completely dead...less than 7 hours of no use. Push notifications for both email and the new push are on. On my 2G phone i have them off, now it seems to be normal, 2 days of no use and barely any battery used. I realized that wifi was off on the 2G so now i turned that on to see if that makes a difference too. I don't understand why this is so sporadic between people that have their battery disappear in a few hours and people who claim its better now. Weird!

How about bluetooth, was that turned on?

My battery life is just as good with the 3.0 JB and many apps. I do though use common sense and when not using internet I toggle off 3G, I keep my SSH off unless I'm going to use it, I don't run on full brightness unless needed which is rare, my location setting is off again unless I'm using it. There is a great piece in the stickys giving more tips to prolong battery life.

sbsettings installed?

I'm not sure the JB is the culprit. I never left my phone on stock 3.0 long enough to see if there was a difference. I did two 3.0 restores and immediately restored my data and did a JB. There could be something wrong with my phone, although I just got it in April 2009.

Now I am seeing rumors about an Apple 3.01 update in July. Wonder if it is true and what it will fix.

Ok here we go. I'm living outside the US so I have to jailbreak to use my US bought phones (as i'm no longer with AT&T).

I first upgraded/jailbroke the 2G iPhone with Pwnagetool. Everything went pretty smooth. I set up as new phone, copied the apps i have, music, contacts back on the phone. The next day i noticed the battery nearly died overnight. I then did some research, turned all the push services off and it seems to be close to what it was on 2.x.

When the unlock came out for the 3G i upgraded it via Redsn0w. I installed from my backup (not a new phone). The battery life was terrible, phone would be dead everyday in 3-5 hours of NO use (aka while i was sleeping). I did extensive research online for the problem. I did the "Erase all settings and content" which took about 2 hours, and the phone locked up when it tried to reboot. I was able to then restore back to stock 3.0. I left it for a day on stock (though i can't use the phone because i am not on a local provider). Battery did not drain at all when not in use. I then used redsn0w again to jailbreak, unlocked it...did NOT install anything from cydia or any app other than beejive and the battery died again every 3-5 hours even with no use. I assumed it was push..so back to shutting off mail and application push features. Unfortunately the battery still died really fast (maybe not quite as fast but 85% gone overnight while its sitting doing nothing. So now i'm assuming its either WIFI or the signal/unlock itself. So i charged it before sleeping, turned off WIFI (but did not put it in airplane mode) and sure enough i woke up in the middle of the night, decided to check my phone and 50% gone. So i put the phone in airplane mode but WITH WIFI. When i woke up it was still at nearly 50%. SO...my current conclusion, yet i'm still really confused is that it has something to do with the unlock and the signal. The weird thing is i have full bars/signal on my provider here so it's not like its actively searching for a signal all the time...and i had the same SIM card with 2.x for 6 months with no problems.

My phone does not appear to be getting hot like some complain about. I don't know why the push seemed to be the biggest problem with the 2G...i'm not sure its a valid test to put the phone in airplane mode and leave it on WIFI with push enabled...aka not sure that will help debug. All we know is something(s) is messed up...but its not messed up for everyone. So still...WEIRD! On thebigboss.org they are claiming a lot of problems too...he thinks its bluetooth, but for me that is absolutely not the problem since its never been turned on.

* note bluetooth was never on, i've never used it and it appears to be off by default.

the problem is sbsettings

i restored two different iphone 3g to 3.0 and on my first iphone i used red snow, sbsettings, and irealsms, the battery would drain crazy fast, openning up cydia, checking for any updates, and it would literally be 1% every few seconds. Left it locked/sleep at work with all the settings turned off, an hour later would discover the battery went down by 5% By the time i got off work it was in the red, never happened before the 3.0 update.

With the first iphone i did a clean restore to 3.0, no jailbreak, and there were no battery issues and everything was fine.

Jailbroke it again, sb settings and without irealsms (irealsms uses mobile substrate so i thought that could be the culprit) but the same battery effect.

A test that I discovered to see if my iphone was plagued with battery problems was making a call with max volume and on speaker. The thing basically drained 1% every 2 seconds, CRAZY

I then used a second iphone that has never been jailbroken and did a restore to 3.0. Redsnowed it, added sbsettings again. Once again there were problems, but mostly for calls, calling someone on speaker killed my battery so quickly i could catch the tears from my eyes. Installed iRealsms, same battery crap. So I removed sbsettings and left irealsms with nothing on cept cydia. Wifi + Push were on, push for beejive, and my battery has been great so far.

Went to work, woke up, took it off the charger, usage 3 hours and 21 minutes of music/reading classics, and in total 4 hours and 53 minutes of standby only at 91% battery.

Compared to my other iphone with sbsettings, i remember it drained 5% every hour of music.

I really do think there are only two solutions:
1. Do a restore and setup as a new iphone (my second iphone, i used my first iphone's backup and no problems from that i guess, since the first was never jailbroken the data never got to create any conflict)
2. DONT INSTALL SBSETTINGS !

even the newest sbsettings has been total crap for me

PS. my battery now with my second iphone, with beejive on, wifi, push notifications, i would be msging people for like 20 minutes and then maybe lose 1%, the battery life is awesome now.

**UPDATE**

i know there's an edit button but my last reply was so long

I tried a crap short test by making a call to like Rogers or something, no speaker, but with the screen on the whole time.

yet again the 1% battery drain every 10 seconds on the call was there...how can i get 7 hours of calling with a battery drain that bad! it only took 10-20 seconds for 1% to drain, from 91 to 88 in a matter of seconds.

So i turned on Airplane mode, left it for a few seconds, turned airplane mode off. Then i made the same call in the same conditions, 2 minutes later still no battery drop..

I read some where else that helps solves the problem: Airplane mode.

Obviously there are some major problems at least for a lot of people. I have personally never installed SBSettings and i have the problem.

Much, MUCH better. I have done the same thing and it's infinitely better than the custom firmware solution with the PWNage tool.

Everything gets synced to your Mac/PC aside from your SMS text logs.

That and your personal application settings are lost every time you do it this way.

I am willing to make the trade off, but I understand others are not.

So if I restore as "set up as new iPhone" will that also wipe out information that is saved in particular apps I have installed?

Usage: 48 minutes
Standby: 3:26 hours
Battery %: 91%

3G, Bluetooth and GPS off, Push Notifications and Fetch Mail (hourly) on. Sporadic usage of Wi-Fi for APMobile, Tweetie, Beejive 3.0, Cydia, Mail, Safari, App Store.

Jailbroken today from a clean restore of 3.0. No ultrasn0w or SBsettings, just Cycorder, iFile, OpenSSH and Netatalk.

From the data that I have until now, it's running absolutely normal (for 3.0 and I saw a battery increase with it).

i may do a clean restore on mine and red snow it again

"Setup as a new iphone"

im afraid that even uninstalling sbsettings may have left some files or settings that may be the culprit

I think its ultrasnow (with a little bit of push if you have that on). I cant test outside the usa though with no ultrasnow
