Ya my ipad 3 that was an OTA 5.1.1 update did not work, but once I downloaded 5.1.1 on my pc and restored through itunes, it worked on the first try.

When you guys mean "fresh restore", are you guys talking about returning the iPhone to its factory settings and starting fresh, then restoring from back up?

One problem I see with the tool itself is that you can jailbreak when at the iOS 5 setup splash screen, but if you wish to restore from an iCloud backup after the jailbreak, that option has disappeared from the setup assistant.

ok now my issues have started. Jailbroke 3/4hrs ago. Unplugged my iPhone about 2hrs ago for a few mins and plugged it back in because some apps wouldn't work so backed up and reinstalled 5.1.1 from scratch.

Now iTunes just says 'IPHONE' on the main window but doesn't load anything on there so I can't go into the menu. Reinstalled 5.1.1 twice now

You have to restore with itunes FROM SCRATCH. I tried just resetting from device and it never worked. Worked first time after restoring from itunes

So after the whole jailbreak process, do we NOT have to click on an Absinthe app and then watch it reboot to install Cydia, like on Absinthe 1.0? Or is Cydia installed during the jailbreak process?

It didn't install Cydia for me (yet it did complete the jailbreak)... is this normal? I tried it a second time and same thing. I'm on Lion if that helps.

Try looking for it. I couldn't find it at first because it was just last between my apps.
I didn't even restore yet though so I only have the stock/default apps... I'm definitely not missing it. I've jailbroken in the past without any problems too :(
iPhone 4 (CDMA)

I'm on 5.0.1.. Do I need to update from itunes? before following the steps for JB?

1) Update your iPhone to 5.1.1
2) Download Absinthe
3) Plug in iPhone
4) Right Click your iPhone name and hit "Backup"
5) Now hit the RESTORE button (then confirm you want to restore to factory settings)
6) Wait for restore to finish remembering not to touch anything, dont setup the phone or anything. Leave it alone.
7) Once you see the grey iphone screen with the slide to unlock run Absinthe.
8) Once it has done it says ENJOY
9)Now go into iTunes Right Click your iPhone and hit RESTORE FROM BACKUP.
10) Depending on how much data you have it will all be done once it has restored.
