I think the truth is that it's competition that drives things forward. It'd be interesting to see what the world looked like with only Android, since you still have multiple vendors deploying various implementations of Android to try to sell their hardware.

But as it stands, iI think both platforms are better for having competition. Even if Apple appears to be lagging behind in many respects.

Exactly. In this sort of luxury and "I want" marketplace there is no need for only a single company to dominate. Competition keeps them honest. I am not going to rag on something just because its different from what I use.

My goodness, Android devices still come with crapware and bloatware? No thanks.
And Apple devices don't have a bloatware problem? I personally have no use for the Tips, Stocks, News, Podcasts, Reminders, Videos and Find My Friends apps. The unfortunate thing with iOS is that you can't actually delete them, just hide them. Both OSs have their share of bloatware, but that problem is easily solved by deleting the apps as soon as you get your phone and never seeing them again.

Didn't you know? Anything Apple puts on the phone ABSOLUTELY CAN'T be bloatware, even if they are things that you may never use.

Agreed. I tend to only use as iPhone on silent mode as I hate the sound of a phone ringing. Also texts
Have ordered a Xiaomi Mi 2 band for wait for it......£12, this will cover the things I use apple watch for, except apple pay, which funnily enough didn't work today. I think its because I let watch drain to 0% yesterday, not like me to do that!

The latest phones from Apple and Samsung show that these products are taking very different and diverging paths. Apple continues down some path that is striving for glitz and “a-ha / wow” technology; while Samsung seems to be putting more focus on phone practicality.

I think Apple really are playing catch-up. The notch is an example of that - they didn't get to the bezeless design first, so they've had to be different and so have this notch (if they had been first, I'm sure they'd not have it - they'd have a design more like the S8).

They were late to OLED to trotted out this line that OLEDs weren't good enough. Even with the iPhone X they're saying it's the first OLED that meets their specs, which is rubbish.

So I think Apple, rather than creating the perfect phone, are purposefully ignoring technology that would make it better, purely because Android phones got there first. I'm surprised they conceded on wireless charging - especially after saying it was pointless a few years ago.

Agree. I am pushing way fewer buttons on the Note 8 than my ip7+. In addition, I'm really liking the 'keep unlock' feature. I put a dot on my home and work, and my phone stays unlocked if I choose until I go outside the geofence. Don't need to mess around with the fingerprint sensor all day long.

'Force touch' on the Note is also better than iOS. More options come up, and the screen is just more responsive. The Always On screen (with clock) lets me see the time and other things without touching my phone.

I am also no longer double-swiping my screen to get the phone to respond. The Note screen is very smooth and responsive.

I've been saying forever that iOS needs some way of temporarily disabling the TouchID requirement. It fails constantly at the gym when there's any moisture on my hands (and of course I constantly need to unlock it because trying to use the music controls on the lock screen typically results on opening the camera or some other incorrect gesture response).

I also find myself constantly having to repeat taps/gestures in iOS because it simply doesn't respond, almost always due to input blocking from 'animations' (even after they're done).

I'll switch to Android if the input response is instant and consistent. I can't seem to ever get the timing right even though I tell myself to wait an extra second, it still misses the first attempt. It's infuriating and wastes so much time.

If only apple allowed custom menu colors or text bubble colors.
Sure, and this is the Android pull for alot of folks including me. Customization. Get as extreme as we like, or just a little, at least we have control. After all we pay for the phone right? It's ours right?
Iphone does what it does very well and requires practically nothing from the end user, just flip it on and it just works. Very much to vanilla tho. Can't do anything to it that's not been preapproved by Apple. That's why I have 2, one of each. When I get tired of vanilla I go to the full flavored device, get my fill and switch back when ever. One of these days I won't be coming back and after seeing what Apple is offering in the "X", I've most likely purchased my last iphone. The X brings nothing I need to the table and at an ultra price to boot. They can keep it.

I wish they'd sell a stripped down model, none of the slew of extras I will never use or give us the option to remove them. Oh wait, I'm thinking of Android.

10 years with an iPhone as well also Apple watch, iPad Mini 2, rMBP 2015 13".

Looked at the Samsung Galaxy S8 today...WOW, just WOW!!.
I'm not jumping ship yet, the discounted offer in UK which is compelling is on for the whole of Sept.
Didn't think I'd be interested in the S8+ but its the same size as my weighs a ton mophie iPhone 6 and the S8+ has a duel sim capability for same price as standard S8+ (must buy from Samsung UK for duel sim in seems).

I was on the fence, but after today I'm 75% jumping ship.

Tomorrow I look at all iOS apps I use and sync functionality iCloud etc and work out whether the extra 25% is going to be viable.
Also need to buy this liquid screen protector first.

ps
I also looked as Note 8, absolutely gorgeous, but not on offer as only launched yesterday.
I'm a fan of both iOS and Android. I swap sims and use both. My iPhone is jailbroken, so both phones are set setup similar... but navigation is weird after switching OS from either side... but get used to it fast.

Things to think about is figuring out what syncs on both devices... just in case you want to jump back, or swap back and forth like I do... and not get locked into one ecosystem. Syncing with iCloud is what frustrated me in the beginning... now all my contacts are on Google Contacts, and both phones sync fine with that. I also have a 3rd party cloud I use to sync pictures/videos from both phones... also cheaper than iCloud.

I don't think Samsungs launcher is bad... but I use a different launcher that works similar to JB tweaks... so I have the same look of feel of both devices. Nice thing is, you don't have to root to do this, unlike having to jailbreak iOS to customize. JB on iPhone has been frustrating lately.

iMessage can be a pain when switching from iOS to Android. Just remember to disable iMessage on your iPhone, and for assurance... text STOP to 48369 to de-register/unsubscribe iMessage so if someone iMessages you, you can still get text message on your non-iOS phone. You may or may not miss iMessage... but I only get texts on my phone, do it doesn't affect me much. Only difference is I'm green instead of blue. No one complains since most of my contacts have unlimited texting these days. Except my International friends... who prefer Whatsapp anyway.

For me, not locking myself into one ecosystem makes it easy to transition back and forth. I don't avoid all Apple apps. One thing I still enjoy from Apple on my samsung phone is Apple music.:)

Syncing music is not an issue for me since... most stream music and videos these days. However, bloatware is always a negative when it comes to Android. Like someone mentioned here, you can disable or just hide it in App Drawer. You don't ever need to see it again. It's a waste of internal storage space, but you still have the option to add storage space with an SD Card.;)

Here are some screens of both my iPhone and my Samsung phone. Love them both...

ip_s7_comp2.png

I saved cash and have enough for highest storage iPhone X, but after keynotes and concerns I'm reading, I'm not sure I'll pull the trigger just yet. I may wait for the S9+ early next year, or just hang on to the S7 and see what Apple comes up with next year.

How did you truly personalize your phone compared to the IPhone? This is not a bashing but I see this from people who want to or say they are switching to Android. I\

Android is pretty crazy when it comes to customizations, you can even install Apps with different layouts, themes, icons. You can put custom widgets on your phone, change typography... there is so much customizability for Android phones compared to iPhone that it's really not something to brag about with the iPhone. With iPhone, pretty much what you have control over is the icon ordering, folders, background. That's about it. Anything else requires Jailbreaking. With Android, no jailbreaking required, just install apps from the "Play Store" that allow you to do that sort of customization.

Android really has more flexibility there.

I meant the ability to use quick note.

I love the idea of a stylus despite Steve distain 10 years ago last Feb during iPhone launch.
I was the proud owner of Psion Revo (pointed end stylus) and Psion Series 5 (rounded end stylus), if only the Note 8 was 6 months hence with a Samsung standard discount.....I need a phone fairly soon so with S8 & S8+ heavily discounted its now #1 on the choice list.

Time changed since his days. Today's era, it's all about value of the phone/or whatever and what will benefit you. Whether you want iphone or android, it doesn't matter anymore. Ecosystem is not much of ecosystem anymore because there are alternatives to work with android and osx. For example: pushbullets for imessage thing. It works well with os x and android. I noticed Samsung gives 200 off from iphone 6 plus!! Time of anti-consumerism is no more. It's about pro-consumerism.If people want iphone ...so be it. If they find value..then it's great.

Agree. I cant help but feel in recent years Apple are already 12 months ahead, the iPhone X1 could be launched now, but they want to squeeze as much as they can to maximise profit.
Basically putting profit, before customer satisfaction.

They give $200 off for an iPhone 5... That's what I'm trading it :).

With which you simply disable the app you don't want and you won't ever see it again. My S7 Edge came with a few Rogers (my carrier here in Canada) apps and first thing I did was disable them. Done. They don't run ever, and I don't see them. Simple stuff really.

I would never trust a device that comes with this garbage. Who knows what's running in the background. How do Android fans find this acceptable?

I said the same “WOW” when I first used an S8. It soon faded away after a months use when I returned it.

Bixby button - Annoying and useless to me, plus it’s in a bad place where I kept activating it thinking it was the volume down button

Fingerprint scanner - Didn’t even bother using it as it was in such an uncomfortable and awkward place

Performance - I noticed it began to slow down a little just after a month of usage

That and the screen “edges” being a nuisance more than a benefit. It’s just pointless eye candy.

Not saying your experience will be the same, but I just don’t agree when people say it’s the best smartphone design out there despite the above flaws. There is more to design than how it looks. If it detracts from usability then it is bad design to me.

Apple created apps that can't be deleted is a far cry from carrier installed garbage. You really don't see that?

I've been using Android since the 1.5 release on the G1 (2009) and I've grown sick and tired of it since the Lollipop release I started using in 2015.
On one hand Apple bridged the gap in power (big jump since they started using 2GB RAM), screen size, and even price on the mid-range, on the other Android has grown hostile to modders and stale in terms of functionality.
I continue using Android only because I have two phone numbers and I can use a dual SIM phone, but one day or the other I know I'm getting an iPhone.

If you disable an app, it does NOT run in the background.

Christ, some of you guys are as stupid as Trump voters screaming "death panels" and "lock her up".

Ha. Dubious claim. A 5 second google search shows me that millions of android devices are potentially infected by malware from carrier installed crap.

No thanks, I'm staying far away.

100% agree Pat, Power to the People!
The S8 and S8+ and S8+ and duel sim is £250.00 off at the moment....with my iPhone 6 and the extra £100.00 Samsung are offering.

So for example S8+ duel sim: £779.00 minus £250.00 so £529.00, a cost I'm comfortable with.

Plus the cost includes the all important 24 month warranty.
If I can get used to android its compelling.
