Real-time tanslation isn't important? Seriously?
Amazing right , building cutting edge technology is bad .... but a calculator ... 1000 calculator apps in the store , but we get this whining every single event , I think it got to a point where Apple are like "guys lets put a calculator app and be done with it" but then they think "but we didnt put one for ages , we cant just put a calculator app , it will be the same as the 1000 in the app store" and so here we are , it is SO trivial to get one or make one that its basically a meme at this point.

If someone needs a calculator app he will just download one...... not sure how hard it is to do.

It is a crazy amount of anger over a software update, right?
Very much so. Like others have said, you shouldn't get a device only for what it may do in the future. I got it because the screen is beautiful, the more ram, and to a much lesser degree, more powerful apps coming to the device. I don't regret my iPad pro purchase at all.

Besides they're acting like Apple held a gun to their heads and made them buy it.

Apple could have announced that it would be software only if they had any decency. No big deal if they made one small announcement so that Youtubers / customers and leakers could focus elsewhere. That would be the decent thing to do.
In my mind, there's only one "decent" thing Apple needs to do: keep their heads down, keep working on what's next, and keep ignoring people that want every Apple device to be designed by committee. They have always been good at tuning out the noise, and the products end up much better for it. They owe nothing to the cottage industry of rumor sites that fabricate future hardware/software features out of thin air in order to keep their ad revenue healthy.

It's nobody's fault but your own if it makes you angry that what you perceived to be the next logical thing for iPad did not appear in a specific keynote. How is Apple liable for what you conjured up in your own mind for your own workflow only.

This DUD of a showing today just shows APPLE can not innovate anymore.

Everything mentioned today in macOS should have been added to Big Sur. Not OS 12.

NOW. JUNE 24TH! The New Windows 10 UPDATE.

I BET IT WILL BE MUCH BETTER THAN THE APPLE OS 12.
Ok, what exactly are you on about now? What exactly is APPLE OS 12 and what features is it missing that you think Windows 10 will have?

The thing is, in my case crippling iPad OS to force me to buy a Mac is not helping their profits. Right now I have a 10.5" iPad Pro from 2017 that they've given me no reason to upgrade. I'm not willing to pay that much money for a slightly better screen to watch Netflix on while I work out, or to surf the web in bed or whatever, and given my workflow and the limitations of iPad OS, that's about all an iPad is good for in my case.

I figure my current iPad will still be able to surf the web a little bit and play Netflix videos for a good long time to come, and until they do something to make iPad OS less horrible, I have no interest in upgrading.

My other device is a 2018 15" MacBook Pro. For many years a software package I can't live without was Mac-only, but they've recently released a Windows version, and I keep a Windows machine around for gaming, so ... who knows. Maybe my time in the walled garden is nearing its inevitable end.

Exactly. This talk of macOS on an iPad hurting profits is dumb. It would actually increase profits for Apple. Sell more iPads. Higher end iPads. If it results in a few less MacBooks sold so what? Any way you get users to use iPadOS and that App Store is a win for Apple. IMO it exposes more users to macOS who’ve never used one. (I’ll be honest I know very few who’ve ever used or currently own a Mac but they do know iPhones and iPads). And the joke is they’d probably hardly use macOS on it much like few used boot camp on macs.

Why in the world is anyone suddenly concerned with mac sales anyways? Apple sure hasn’t been the entire iOS era. Seriously.

I have always seen the iPad as a large formation of the iPhone, yes it is slowly and I mean SLOOOOWWWWLY departing from being a ‘large iPhone’ to being its own device in its own right.

For many users the iPad is perfect for their use case and is the only device they need other than their phone, just as much as many people are perfectly fine with a baseline MacBook Air or Pro

The problem is if they make the iPad too capable with software, it will likely destroy their low end Mac sales, and from a business perspective I can see exactly why they wouldn’t want too much advancement with the iPad.

Lol here’s another one. He thinks if iPads are too capable and take away mac sales then it’d hurt Apple. You mean all those iPad users locked into Apple App Store paying 30% to Apple is bad for Apple??? You’re right Apple would much rather these users buy a low end mac and watch future app revenues go poof.

iPads cost just as much as a MacBook Pro ... and to be honest, if the iPad had MacOS in it, I would still likely buy a MacBook Pro and an iPad so that they can be used in different situations ... today, everything I want to do on my Mac I can do on my iPad (very minor exceptions of course) (in my case) ... but I don't think they reduce what's sold at all, just increase capability of the device ...

That's what's blowing my mind. You could get a Mac for the same price or less. Everything you can do with a iPad Pro, you can do on a Mac, especially now with the emulator playing iOS apps. The only thing it doesn't have is the touch screen. So what is the reason to buy these?

And the MacBook Pro refresh is supposed to bring the Mini-LED from the iPad Pro. So it creates a box for them where they don’t have a marketable bonus to the iPad Pro. It’s one unique feature is the pencil it doesn’t even come standard with.

I already own my M1 so I am on the ship now. But I do honestly wonder if they are planning to announce something I’m September or over the summer as the betas flush out.

They added so much extra signaling to the iPad Pro I am still struggling to understand why.

one thing i struggle with the ipad pro pricing is a $350 keyboard that doesn't even include more battery. most overpriced luxury, second to only wheels.

Very serious. What will stop anyone from just giving a small, very small heads up that it will be only developers software conference? Not giving away anything but letting his customers know that it will not be hardware and that would have stopped all of the rumors.
It’s a little nuts how you seem to think Apple owes you a “heads up” on future announcements. They don’t give that to the press, they don’t give that to Wall Street, and they sure as hell don’t give that to forum lurkers.

Apple showed their true colours today, the M1 iPad was nothing more than a easy marketing cash grab.

They basically gave their customers the middle finger, never seen anything more lacklustre than iOS/iPadOS 15, all that hype about the M1 and extra ram was never going to benefit us in the end.

Love my apple products, but I won’t be upgrading as often as I have in the past, it’s time apple started earning our money, leave out new features and hardware that can easily be added to new products, you won’t be getting my money from now on.

Everyone true colours eventually come out, apple showed theirs today in a BIG way.
Thanks for this post. Not laughed so much in ages. Really needed that…

Clearly you don't draw/paint/design or otherwise use the Pencil (Procreate, Affinity Designer, Concepts and many more apps).

And you don't care about weight and portability (13" MacBook Pro is more than twice the weight of a 12.9 inch iPadPro).

And don't need the convenience of taking photos with an iPad.

We buy and use what meets our needs.

I got the 8gb ram model ? hopefully people got a refund on the 16gb ram models ?

Nope. Quite happy to keep my M1/16GB iPP.

I want 1TB so my alternative is either the 2018 1TB LTE (A12X/6GB) or 2020 1TB LTE (A12Z/6GB) which are still ~$1300-1700 with tax (certified refurb or brand new). Over a 3-5 year period, I expect I'll be much happier with the 2021.

It is what it is. I’m not really concerned.… the iPad is my primary computing device, it’s practically my favorite Apple product. Although, I wish I would of waited… but hey, we on the ship now.

My alternative is… return it, go get the latest iPad Air and M1 MBP? But I prefer the larger display of the iPad Pro.

On an iPad? No it’s not. and I’m talking about the translate app itself being of little use on an iPad Compared to a built in calculator app. They did it with the remote app. Integrated it into control center. They could do the same with calculator. They put it on the damn Apple Watch ……the watch . But not a productivity device like iPad. It’s pathetic

I decided that I am going to return my M1 iPad. Sure, the screen is beautiful, but I was hoping for more new capabilities that would make the M1 experiences potentially materially different from that of my 2018 iPad Pro.

I have really enjoyed CenterStage, which is super cool and genuinely useful. I have also enjoyed the improved screen, but as it stands I'm not getting massive day-to-day improvements in doing my work.

I will be prepared to re-purchase the device if and when there is justification to do so -- and they seem to be in stock at my local Apple Stores. But from what I can tell, everything coming in iOS 15 will also come to my device. I'm sure with time, my beloved 2018 will finally start to feel old. But I'll put the $2k back in my account for now. I'm sure I'll be back in due course, though...

By the way, I may be disappointed that there isn't more good stuff here. But it's my choice to buy the device or not, so not throwing shade on anyone -- Apple or otherwise. Happy to have the right to return it -- sorry for those outside the window though if they too wanted to return.
