I see it this way – after WWDC:

It's much easier/cheaper for Apple to produce a lot of M1 chips in 8gb/16gb variations, than producing two or more different chips for iPad/Macs. After all, the M1 is just rebranded mobile chip with more power. Not bad for markering either, so Apple wins, customer wins.

Not saying I'm not disappointed after the keynote, but now we clearly see what Apple said before – iPad and Mac are not gonna be merged. They want you to use both devices, so they make switching between them almost seamless.

I think the fact that Apple hasn't ported their pro apps like logic and final cut to the ipad pro even though both are already m1 optimized should speak volumes

Apple showed their true colours today, the M1 iPad was nothing more than a easy marketing cash grab.

They basically gave their customers the middle finger, never seen anything more lacklustre than iOS/iPadOS 15, all that hype about the M1 and extra ram was never going to benefit us in the end.

Love my apple products, but I won’t be upgrading as often as I have in the past, it’s time apple started earning our money, leave out new features and hardware that can easily be added to new products, you won’t be getting my money from now on.

Everyone true colours eventually come out, apple showed theirs today in a BIG way.
I returned my M1 iPad Pro 11 and Magic keyboard after 3 days. The MBA and low level MBP kills it in productivity and functionality

Being M1 optimized isn't the biggest hurdle in getting these apps to iPad. Apple has made it clear that the iPad is a "touch first" device. An app that has heavy reliance on mouse/keyboard and the menu bar needs an interface overhaul to work on an iPad to the level that meets Apple's standards, especially for the smaller screened iPads.

Returning my magic keyboard as well, for the price they're charging, battery drain, keyboard backlight can get annoying when tv is on keeps changing brightness 24/7, trackpad noisy as hell and a lot firmer than my MacBook Pro.

I'm the opposite, I'm looking to get the magic keyboard, the new iPad Pro is everything I expected it to be, and I feel the magic keyboard will kick this up a notch
As much as I’m against the MK (primarily for the price)… the new keyboard shortcut feature on iPadOS 15 is everything. I strongly disliked the keyboard shortcut on previous versions… the strip covered the entire screen, making it annoyingly impossible to use SlideOver at times.

M1 optimised is not the same thing as iOS optimised.
It is much easier to run an iOS app over MacOS (indeed it is already done), than it is to run a MacOS app over iOS.

I have a feeling that when people say that they would like to see Apple’s pro apps running on iPadOS, what they really mean is that they would like to see MacOS running on an iPad. Only, for some bizzarre reason, they are not willing to admit it.

That's what I want. I don't understand Apple's philosophical resistance to it. The complaint has always been that the iPad doesn't have a mouse and keyboard. Well, now there's an official mouse and keyboard attachment. Problem solved.

Apple is never going to work back up to all the features that pro apps need in iPadOS that have been built up over decades in macOS. The apps and OS, if they ever get there, will probably just be very much like macOS anyway. And the iPad hardware is the same as a Macbook now so there's no actual hardware barrier any more.

I don't mean to trivialize this port, but I also don't think it's some problem that apple can't solve for. My argument is if they cared, this would be ready at launch.

iPad Pros have been around for 4 generations.

Good for you, send it all back, throw your toys out and move to Microsoft, cancel everything Apple.

It does. I couldn't even think to use the iPad without it. Bought the old one for the half of the price of the new one. It's perfect.

Maybe a little world wide pandemic got in the way and illness in the company slowed developments……..

Dude you haven’t been paying attention then, I’ve been saying for a few years now it’s about cash grab and using leftover parts but adding something new to the iPad and jacking prices....the cycle is now up to. 3 or 4 years before wasting money again not...this is not new

You mean for your uses. I have all 3, M1 Air, 11” pro and MGK and now a new 12.9” and MGK. MGK is way better with the 12.9. And for my uses prefer it over the Air.

Very serious. What will stop anyone from just giving a small, very small heads up that it will be only developers software conference? Not giving away anything but letting his customers know that it will not be hardware and that would have stopped all of the rumors.

now tell me why that actually makes sense where they couldn’t do that?

They COULD do that, obviously. But I don't see why it's Apple's job to babysit the Apple-enthusiast public's penchant for rumors and hype followed by rage or depression when their wishes aren't fulfilled. Maybe people just need to be mature and not like 5-year-olds who didn't get exactly what they wished for at Christmas? As long as Apple isn't making false promises, I don't see the issue. Plus, look at all the Apple-discussion it generates by not announcing the agenda (even a generalized one) ;)

Upselling 16GB of RAM with no conceivable way to use it properly in the OS and no apps is one step removed from a false promise. People are rightly upset about it. It shouldn't take a deep analysis of what iOS is currently capable of doing with its RAM to pick out the right iPad for your needs.

Apple could but they wanted iPads to be locked down like iPhones. If they would relax that requirement, then it would be a lot easier to port macOS apps to iPadOS. They won't but even then it should be relatively simple by just running macOS in a virtual machine (which the A14 and M1 have support for.) The fact that they don't do that either says it is purely philosophical and not technical.

There are tons of tiny fiddly bits in FCP that will need reworking for touch. While they COULD release it on iPad, I don’t think they will without it being touch centric.
