OK, that makes more sense and is good.

Yay!

Yep, you got it.

Double yay!

From the sounds of things it doesn't make sense why you have an issue. Having a combined router/modem should make life easier as you only have one source for dhcp.

Agreed.

Is the switch configurable? If so, is it using dhcp too? All the devices should basically have consecutive (or similar) ip addresses. Eg my network is 192.168.1
- .1 modem
- .2 AExpress router
- .3 Notebook 1
- .4 Notebook 2
- .5 Ipad
- .6 Iphone 1
- .7 Iphone 2
- .8 ATV2

Can you ping them all from different devices?

All get a 192.168.1.xx address and I can ping, map drives, etc etc, no address problems whatsoever.

If the switch is configurable it should be bridged and not using dhcp.

Good question-I'll go and check on the exact model now (it's a Belkin 24 port), but I've never had an issue with anything network.IP related since the day it went it.

For my AExpress as a client connected to the hifi I have a simple setup:
- Join a wireless network
- Allow Ethernet clients
- Nothing on Internet tab - bridged is greyed out.
- Only 'Enable iTunes' checked on music tab..
- nothing on print or advanced tabs

I'm happy for you to take a look using Teamviewer if that helps?

I am not sure if someone asked this before but it HomeSharing ON the PC iTunes?

It is and I can play music through my iPhone and iPad from my (hard wired) PC's iTunes library, using the "Remote" app.

The only other thought I have is that the modem/router may be running/configured separately even thought its in the one box. Does it show what brand model it really is?

It's a Thomson of some description.

Or you could connect you PC to the network via wireless instead :)

I guess so, but surely I shouldn't have to?

Can itunes output from the 2nd PC to AExpress or does it have the same problem? Is it wired or wireless?

My (wireless) laptop gets the Airplay icon and I get the icon on my iPhone and iPad to send music from the devices to the AE, but what I can't achieve is to be able to send the music from my wired PC to the AE.

Sorry I am all out of ideas. All I can think of it is
- it's something about the Thompson modem/router
- the PC firewall is blocking (try turning it off)
- this capability is not suported - maybe try the apple forum

I will let you know if I think if anything else.

Oh, do you configure the Airport Utility on the Notebook or the PC. If it's the PC that's a good sign and means pc vis modem/router to AE is working fine.

I can get to it using either.

If I just plug the AE in the mains without an ethernet lead in it, I can get to it using "Scan" on my wifi laptop.

If I plug a lead in, I can get to via I.P and default password from my wired PC using File>Configure Other.

All out of ideas now........
I think you need to google and find someone who has done wired PC to router to AExpress. Sorry I cant test it either.

Thanks.

Exactly the same versions as I have.

I'm just thinking it's going to be easier to just stick a Wireless card in my PC.... :(

Don't give up yet. We can solve it, I'm sure.

It'll probably turn out to be something really obvious. "Oh, so the PC has to be turned on. Who knew!"

It does trouble me that on your wired PC, you say you have to connect manually to the AE to set it up with Airport Util by putting in the IP address. I believe that it should see it automagically - maybe it's being blocked somehow, by a firewall etc.

Also, there's some interesting instructions here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21537?viewlocale=en_US

It's for an old version of Airport Util I think, but it says that "Selection of the "Enable AirTunes over Ethernet" checkbox shown above has no effect after following step 7". Step 7 is turning off DHCP so you can use the AE as wired only.

Maybe in this newer version of Util, the Enable over Ethernet box disappears once you've it up per Option 3 because with wired only, that's the only way that Airtunes will work anyway. I.e. it disappears because it's not needed.

I also noticed a Thread somewhere where the guy said that the AE wouldn't appear in the Airport Util when connected wired until he restarted the PC while the AE was plugged in to the network.

On the wired PC, Tthe Airport Utility can't see the default AE, but can get to it via IP, whereas my wifi laptop can scan and see it and begin the setup.

Yeah, I posted that a bit further back. ;)

The issue with it is this:

The AE is plugged in to the wall and has an ethernet cable in it.

The Airport Utility doesn't find it initially, but I can get to it by specifiying the IP (showing in my "attached devices" section in router) of 192.168.1.83.

When the utility opens up, if I click on "Music", I get an option to enable Airtunes over ethernet.

But...when I then click on "Airport" Tab and then "Wireless"

If I then select "Join wireless network", "Extend Wireless Network", or "Off" etc, it removes the AirTunes over Ethernet option.

So...the only option that allows me to keep the "Airtunes over Ethernet" option is "Create a Wireless Network"....

Who knows!?

I also noticed a Thread somewhere where the guy said that the AE wouldn't appear in the Airport Util when connected wired until he restarted the PC while the AE was plugged in to the network.

I'm happy to try that!

So, ignoring whether the option to Enable over Ethernet appears or not, did you set up the AE per option 3, turning off the wireless and the DHCP and just being a wired device? And if so, what devices does Airtunes appear on? If any...

To be honest, I've lost track of what I've tried and from what machine.

I'll reset it now-what config shall I start with?

AE just plugged in to mains and access it via Utility on wifi laptop?

Try this:
I’m using Airport Utility 5.5.2 for Mac – assume it’s the same for PC.
Connect AE to Ethernet and an audio cable to your amp.
Factory reset.
Open Utility on your wired PC. AE should appear in list.
(if it doesn’t , connect manually as you did before – though I still think this is important somehow)
Select Manual set up
In Airport>Wireless> Wireless mode > Off
In somewhere I’ve forgotten, give AE a name.
In Music, ensure Enable Airtunes is checked.
In Airport>Summary, ensure Connect Using says Ethernet, and IP address is in the same subnet as your other devices (192.168.1.x)
Press Update
Give it a password
Wait
That’s all.
You’ll get a message saying unable to find the basestation, but that’s ok.

Restart the PC for good measure
Launch iTunes

Now, I just did this on my wired Mac, and I’ve now got a little Airtunes menu in iTunes in the bottom right of the window.

It hasn't/never did.

Done (router has given it 192.168.1.91).

Select Manual set up

I don't get that option, it goes straight in and reports 2 x problems:

In Airport>Wireless> Wireless mode > Off

Done.

In somewhere I’ve forgotten, give AE a name.

It's under the "Base Station" tab and I've called it "Airport Express 1"
In Music, ensure Enable Airtunes is checked.

Done (no mention of 'over ethernet' but it is ticked).

In Airport>Summary, ensure Connect Using says Ethernet, and IP address is in the same subnet as your other devices (192.168.1.x)

Again, I don't get that option, just the Summary page saying there were 2 issues detected as in the pic above.

I can pretty much ignore the "default settings" error, as all that's moaning about is the lack of a wireless password (not surprising seeing as wireless is off!) and I've changed the AE default password from "public"

This is the outstanding "error" (I'll tick "Ignore" for it)

"This AirPort wireless device has a private IP address on it's WAN port. It is connected to a device or network that is using Network Address Translation (NAT) to provide private IP addresses. You should change your AirPort wireless device from using DHCP and NAT to bridge mode"

Now, I just did this on my wired Mac, and I’ve now got a little Airtunes menu in iTunes in the bottom right of the window.

I live in hope!

Saving changes and restaring now...

Hmmm....

There's something strange I've just noticed-I can't use the "Remote" app to find my iTunes library...

I've enabled Home Sharing (and am signed in) by Advanced>Turn on Home Sharing.

This MUST be related...
