And yet not a word from anyone now that we know the new iPhones will ship with a USB-C Lightning cable that is incompatible with all previously included iPhone power adapters (except iPhone 11 Pro and Max).

It's more common for people to post when there's a problem, so people not posting about one thing or another might have something to do with them not having a problem with it.

For instance, all my existing USB-A - lightning cables will continue to work fine with the iPhone 12, as will my wireless charger. And the cable included with the iPhone 12 will be great to have at hand when I purchase my next USB-C charger (I already have one).

So yeah, it's all good.

It is the cable that usually wears out. Had several cables go bad over the years. Never had any power adapter go bad. Have dozens laying around. Enough to power small aircraft carrier.

I know but I was half joking.

MagSafe charger requires usb c brick? Does it come with one?
I dont have a usb c brick...

The iPhone 11 charger can charge iPhone 12 models perfectly fine... there's no new standard stopping people from charging new phones...
Why kill the environment with useless cable i cannot use anyway?

You've not been paying attention then.

The phone will still work just fine with my existing Lighting to USBA cables and existing Qi charging pads / stands.

The inclusion of a USBC Lighting cable is handy for direct connection to my macbook without using of my USBA to C adapters.

That logic works because everybody has a phone. With enough iOS penetration it works out. MacBooks not so much
Huh? Everybody here so far are talking about how they themselves already have a boatload of chargers. So based on that logic, these same people should then demand Apple to skip the chargers for MacBook as well since they should already have an existing Macbook charger.

If we talk about everybody as in the whole world, smartphone penetration is still quite high in emerging markets, meaning majority of people don't actually have an existing smartphone, let alone an iPhone.

So you're NEVER going to have a USBC power source?

Ever?

Are you positive you'll never use that cable?
Will Apple give a USB c brick ever? Never?
Apple should alternate year after another. Brick cable brick cable brick cable.....
Saving environment is BS reason.

I would do this, but I consistently sync my iPhone, so a port/cable is a must, it's why I hope Apple doesn't switch to a portless iPhone yet, at least until after they make a 1TB Pro Max. I imagine those 3rd party apps like VLC will now be useless, unless you could wirelessly transfer movies/tv shows to it, or documents to a documents app.
Wifi sync all the way, baybeee!

Apple removed that charging brick so they could:

A: Get people to buy the USB-C faster charging brick

B: Forget about using a cord and buy Mag-Safe

It's no coincidence that Apple came out with a new way to charge their phone at the same time as releasing a new wireless charger. Its purely a business move and has little to do with anything environmental in my opinion.

I didn't know I could sync with iTunes via WiFi.
I don't know about Windows, but I've been doing it for at least a few years now on MacOS. Should be a "sync via wifi" setting somewhere. Can also drag and drop files too. Not sure which iTunes all that showed up in first.

I have been buying USB Type-C GaN high wattage chargers here and there in attempt to future proof my charging experience for iOS devices and other USB-C devices. I have been ready for this move by Apple.

I don't like Apple USB c brick anyway. It looks wide and it would take up three spots on the power strip.

You can still use all your existing lightning to USB-A cables and adapters.

I think it makes sense to switch to USB-C with the cable that ships in new boxes because there's so much USB-C stuff out there now.

A voucher, that if Apple were right, the vast majority would have no need to claim and wouldn’t. By Apples supposed logic that everyone already has plenty of power adaptors, then by implication everyone has plenty of cables too, but yet they included a cable anyway? Not only that, they cynically included a cable that was probably not compatible with that mountain of power adaptors? I guarantee Apple are getting everything they were really trying to accomplish.
When Apple released the iphone 7, they included a lightning to headphone jack in the box. The handwriting is on the wall.
To top it off, they then proceed to encourage folks to buy another charging device / cable, e.g. MagSafe wireless charger that again is not compatible with the mountain of chargers or the included cable?
Sure, why not. It's not as if the magsafe and power brick are interchangeable. Buy which one suits you.

You really believe this was a big environmental effort?
I do believe it will lead to less e-waste and emissions.
They then reduce the price of their adaptors; why? Is it because since nobody needs them, they‘ll be left in the shelves or perhaps people will see the intrinsic value and ask why the iPhone is being shipped with $60 less accessories than last year.
The 20w cost $20 in the Apple store. Seems like a good price.
It‘s not for me to tell you what to believe, but I absolutely do not believe the Apple narrative.
Correct. Take away what you want. The bottom line is, this is the new reality.

Yeah I don’t disagree with you. But they will still sell millions of them because its what they will offer online and in their stores.

IPhone mini has a 5.4 inch screen down from the 6.1 inch screen in iPhone 11. iPhone mini has 2 hours less battery life on video playback that surely translates to less battery life for daily use compared to the iPhone 11. It’s even worse on audio playback with 15 hours less compared to the 11. iPhone mini price is where the iPhone 11 price used to be. I would agree with you if the successor to the iPhone 11 came in at the same price but with better everything. iPhone 12 starts at a higher price than the 11 while also removing charger and EarPods. I can’t recall exactly but I don’t remember price increases when iPhones moved to LTE compared to 3g. I don’t recall a price increase when retina was introduced. iPhone 12 is the yearly update to the 11 for an extra $100 with what feels like the usual yearly progress.

Arguably you’re paying more for the yearly update this time around. It can be nuanced but I would not call this holding the line when the line itself has shifted right in front of our eyes. Holding the line would be prices the same (or lower) while apple removed the charger and EarPods. Then changing the prices the year after with the next update.
The iphone 12 mini, while being a different form factor, also has more tech than the iphone 11. It's not an iphone 11 in a smaller form factor. The only thing you seem to give up is night mode and 2 hours, but you gain oled, 5g, wifi 6, dolby vision, and enhanced slo-mo.

So the iphone 12 mini starts at the same price, has arguably more tech then the iphone 11 (although it's missing night mode) and doesn't have earpods and a charger in the box. iphone 12 mini took the place of the XR, so it seems.

I don't know if one is paying more or not, I guess it's the perspective of how one wants to view the lineup.

What devices in the world do not use USB C now besides iPhone? iPad and Mac switched, PC has largely switched too. Surely people who through out their old charger that they could have used instead, could find a way to charge if they want cables and not a dedicated wireless option.

I have medical devices that are brand new that charge batteries via micro USB charging (my cochlear implant processor; my bluetooth neckloop, my bluetooth direct adapter). My hearing aid programmer connects via USB-B plug, as does my printer.

I do however have a bunch of USB-C chargers; I have an 18W one from my Pixel 2, I have a 29W Apple one, I have several Anker 60+ W ones. We also have a bunch of USB-C to C and USB-A to C cables. And I have a couple of USB-C to Lightning cables as well.

We've had 12 years and every retail store in America to accumulate Lightning cables. It's obvious that Apple would prefer we just use wireless charging.

USB-C for an iPhone would just be an unnecessary stop-gap to a full wireless phone.
