Do we know if any cards but the Saphire version would work?

The Powercolour RX 580 8GB is £280 atm vs £570 for the Saphire.

Anybody know if this would work in a 5,1 without issue?

Cheers

Tom

It should work fine, but it will only identify correctly in 'About This Mac' and 'System Information' in 10.13.4 beta & up. Where did you find one for £280?

As long as it works fine then im not too bothered about it identifying correctly.

It was on Ebuyer.com 1 only! It is the Golden version...

Super lucky been looking at all sorts to try and get lightroom to play better on my 27" display and try and keep under £300 as spending £600 on one item for a 10 year old machine seemed crazy.

Prices have been so mad so when I saw this I jumped on it.

That is very helpful to know. Thanks!
One of the main reasons to upgrade was to put less strain on power. I think I'll reinstall the RX580 in that case.

Thanks again

Make no mistake, the RX580 is a hungry card. Sure, within the limits of a Mac Pro, but it's really hungry for what it offers! 185W for GTX 1060 performance levels, where the GTX 1060 only sips 120W. And the way that the RX 580 "sips" power is VERY inefficient, so much that it throttles itself after too long. I have an MSI Reference RX580, and it needed some undervolting to get better performance and more efficient power draw. I posted the results in the VR thread. Again, that was with the MSI RX580 8G model, so it may be MSI specific, and may not apply to other RX580 models.

It worked flawlessly in MacOS btw. I don't even know if MSI produces it anymore:

That's one thing I love about nVIdia. It's actually more "set it and forget it" than AMD. Never once I had to worry about optimizing power loads or performance with my 1070 FE. Just made sure the web driver was installed, and whola, it's as good as it's gonna get fellas! With the RX580, I couldn't stand not undervolting, knowing that my CPU clock speeds fall by a few hundred after several minutes of gaming, while the heat and noise increases, all because it wasn't efficiently "tuned" from the factory to begin with. I probably spent about 10 hours optimizing the RX580, time that I will never get back. Wattman is a great tool, but sometimes it will glitch and revert voltage states (which I opened a ticket for) without any crash, so it was never fully reliable...I had to spend time checking Wattman every once in awhile before each gaming period to make sure it didn't revert for some unknown reason.

So i updated to 10.13.3 and after the update i get a red screen directly after booting.
I reinstalled high sierra with apfs on my mac pro 2009 (4,1 to 5,1).
Everything works, card works normally, so i tried to update agian and boom, red screen again.
My GT120 boots normally, so is the 10.13.3 update broken voor RX580 8GB sapphire pulse?

I am managed to get my hands on one as well but now i am wondering if something is wrong with it. Playing Diablo III the gfx card (?) goes into full vacuum level noise mode. I got it used off eBay. Is there something wrong with it? Normal? Any fan control/monitor available for it? (I'm on 10.13.3, cMP 5,1)

will any RX580 work OOTB plug and play and have a boot screen ?
I don't care if the system information doesn't identify it correctly .
but the prices for these hover around the $400 mark right now ...
that's a lot of money to pay for the wrong card ...
I have read that the Pulse will work but what about the Nitros ...
for that kind of money I would rather have a Nitro ...
I want a card that will give me a boot screen right out of the box ...

No, you will not get a boot screen with an RX580.

well , I'm running an old HD 5870 and it's obviously time for an upgrade .
i'm trying to play around with CGI and character animation a little bit in Blender .
in the HD 5870 Falls flat on its face
is there any card upgrade that will give me a boot screen right out of the box ?

Do you really need a boot screen?
Only way to get a boot screen is with a mac 'EFI' card (i.e. a card made for a mac like your 5870) or a flashed Nvidia card.
The Nitro cards have a funny power requirement (I think a 6 pin and 8 pin).

Unless you use FileVault you really don’t need a boot screen.
An RX 580 really is the best all round card for the cMP currently. Truly plug and play, no drivers necessary and works in recovery mode.
I’d avoid the Nitro card as it occupies 2.5 slots.

OK just trying to wrap my head around this ..
so I am not going to get a boot screen can I still access startup to my other drives and Bootcamp
by using the system preferences startup disk option panel ?

so it doesn't matter what brand RX 580 I get I'm not going to get a boot screen .
so why does everyone recommend the Pulse ?
why won't any RX 580 work ?

I think all RX580's work, but the Pulse is the one used by Apple in the eGPU (and what I have).
It is also worth checking the power connectors on the 'other' brands.
The Pulse has one 8 pin, which connects to the two 6 pin in your mac (with a splitter cable)

so how do you select which startup drive to boot into .

Just got a new dell u2715h display.....:D
Wooowww that extra resolution from my 24 inch 1920x1200 is fantastic.
Does anyone know if DP 1.2 should be enabled if connected to an RX580?
It defaults to disabled.

I can't see why need to disable it if it works

Its actually working ootb as disabled.
Just wondered what difference enabling makes. I assume its 1.1 if disabled, I could try it, but thought ask around first.
