Its actually working ootb as disabled.
Just wondered what difference enabling makes. I assume its 1.1 if disabled, I could try it, but thought ask around first.

Understand that the default is disable (which means DP 1.1). What I mean is if DP 1.2 also work, I personally will leave the setting at DP 1.2.

But I just have a quick check of the u2715h spec. I believe it won't make any difference in macOS. the DP1.2 may be only for MST output, which is not supported in macOS.

Will this dual mini 6pin to 8pin cable work if I only wanna run the RX 580 in my Mac Pro 5,1? Or do I need to just get a single 6pin to 8pin cable?

I also want to know this... I'm contemplating upgrading to the RX 580 and want to know exactly what I'll need to power it.

Also, If I have a 4,1 flashed to a 5,1, did I read somewhere there would be a fan speed issue?

Nevermind, I figured it out. For some reason I got the impression there was two different kinds of cables being plugged into the card, but its two cables plugging into a y cable that plugs into the card.

Still curious if I'm going to have fan issues with a 4,1 if I upgrade the graphics card to a RX 580.

Hi, need a little help

I just bought a Sapphire Rx580 Nitro+ 8GB for my cMP 3.1 early 2008.

After installing it, when I boot up, the screen is completely grey and nothing happens.
I tried to connect both VGA (hd2600xt) and then I see boot image, but it hangs out with the apple logo and a strange loading icon, attached is an imaged with the problem.

My cMP has High Sierra 10.13.4 with dosdude1 patch
What could it be?

If I start the Mac Pro in safe mode, it turns on, and can login and see on System Report, that the rx580 is recognised by the system, but it is unusuable in safe mode.

Need help, don't know what else to try.
[doublepost=1524792854][/doublepost]I believe that I have encontered the problem.

Since the VGA has 2 power inputs (1x 6 pins, and 1x8 pins), I have read that the 6 pins it's just for showing since doesn't gets any power.

So, I will try to power the 8 pin, with a splitter using both 6 mini pin pcie connection. I'll buy the cables and post the results.

When ever there is a 6+8 pin on the card. You should connect ALL of them properly. Occasionally, some card can only work with the 8pin connected. But I never see a card that come with a completely useless 6pin, or even connect the 6pin will stop the card to perform properly.

Anyway, you should move the RX580 to slot 1 (the bottom slot), and remove all other GPU if not required.

I've tried everything you say, remove al PCI cards, connect all of the power cables, but nothing happens, the same results.

After reading half of the internet, I do believe it's an under-power problem. The RX580 might need more power than what cMP 3,1 can deliver.

I will try to connect both mini 6 pins to 1 8 pin on the VGA to see if that works, and if don't, might try to connect the optional 6 pin on the VGA to SATA connection and see if it works.

Last solution that I can try, is an external PSU, but my electrical skills are not that advanced.

UPDATE: I made it work.

I have reinstalled high sierra with dosdude1 patch, and selected the AMD fix, and now the cMP boots and it's usable, but...

It made the mac boot, but the screen is super laggy, and I cant even run a benchmark. Even the colors look really strange

I believe it's a driver issue, so, the big question.

How the heck can I install the drivers needed for the VGA? Should I modify the kext file?

Can't you just get a dual mini 6-pin to 8-pin cable?

Why are you installing AMD drivers?
HS includes all necessary drivers.

Where is everyone getting these splitter cables for dual female 6 pin to male 8 pin? I looked on Amazon and I found only 1 and people are saying it's very poorly made and they had to modify it to make it fit.

I find the dual 6-pin to single 8-pin a much better choice. Got mine off eBay, came out of China. It's one cable no need for an female adapters between it which, as your research shows, are usually pretty shoddy.

Another option is the EVGA PowerLink, although it would depend on what card you have to if it would fit or not.

Will I have any power issues with the RX 580? I seen some reports that it can draw more than 225 watts. I don't wanna fry anything.

It shouldn't fry anything if you install it properly.

I'm going to use two of my mini 6pin to 6pin cables and plug those into a dual female 6pin to 8pin cable.

Edit: I have officially purchased the Sapphire PULSE RX 580 8GB! I ordered the dual 6 pin to 8 pin adapter and I've also ordered a dual "mini" 6 pin to 8 pin adapter just in case.

I'm so excited! I can't wait to start using this monster of a card.

My 580 just came in. Installation was a breeze using my dual 6 pin to 8 pin splitter. Mac booted up as expected. No issues as of yet.

Only thing I noticed is the DVI cable I'm using doesn't seem to want to screw into the holes on either side of the DVI port. I have a display port cable I can try, but I'll have to try later because I had to return to work.

Tried out Rocket League for a couple of minutes in macOS. Cranked everything up to max and ran it at 1440p. Mostly 60fps, but it did stutter a few times after every goal for some reason, but I think that's more of a crappy Mac port of the game thing than the card.

I'll try to re-install Windows later. That's where I think I'll see the biggest difference in performance.

Edit: By the way, I got the Sapphire Pulse RX 580 8GB and yet in macOS Sierra, it still says R9 XXX 8GB. I thought the Pulse card would display correctly.

It will only display correctly in HS.
I have a dvi properly connected, its one that came with my dell display!
Your card may not be correctly positioned with the slot on the back of the mac, to line up the dvi screws?

How is that possible? I can push the cable all the way in, but the screws don't go in.

Do they not reach the thread, maybe its a ‘cheaper’ type of cable.

It seems like they reach the thread. There's plenty of room, they just won't screw in for some reason. I start screwing them in and it gets really tight. Usually they just hand screw in pretty easily.
