Apple is breaking everything with this update. I've never seen a macOS update that was this poorly executed -- no bugs fixed, rushed release, no real improvements either. It's difficult to comprehend what may have caused this kind of unprofessional development at Apple - by the way, the entire beta period has been the worst ever. Did they lose all their real engineers and only have interns or something now? No words...

In the same boat — download succeeded, install fails. Is there a way to purge the downloaded file that is apparently corrupt?
I think that's where I'm at too. Thought I saw the download finish but keep getting an error when trying to install.

Not sure where I read this but someone just used a VPN to connect to Australia and is now able to successfully download the update. go figure.
What! I just did that and it started downloading again. 2 hours left though :)

Also download resumed at around 3gb.

what country do you reside in? some are saying Australia's servers are okay?
I'm in Canada. When I tried using a VPN and connected to Australia, I could redownloaded the Big Sur update but I was worried that it may screw something up due to regional differences so I chose not to keep going.

Yeah same I'll for them to fix their server I guess.

VPN to Australia and now downloading. go figure..

I do think people need to chill out a bit. Technology has become far more advanced and complicated over the years that things are bound to break from time to time. Every OS whether it's Windows, Linux etc go through their own sets of issues.

I just got off the phone with Apple Support. After a rather lengthy process and with my rep calling his senior supervisor it was determined that the volume of people downloading the software exceeds what they can handle at the moment. It is being fixed on the Apple end, but may not be resolved until later tonight or possibly tomorrow. He mentioned that there is a chance that it will auto-update, but suggested if I'm still having problems by 1 PM EST tomorrow to call back. They are aware of the problem and it is being worked on, but nothing can be done on our individual computers which would resolve the problem. This may explain why some lucky folks are having success, while other continue to get that irritating error message.

So seems like Apple are blocking American IP's (north / south). I am in Colombia and have been getting the same error message as everyone else. Fired up my VPN and set to Germany (or any other Euopean country) and it works. Slow but works...

My guess is that, now that it is late night in Europe, and late morning in Australia, so people are not hammering the servers like they do in the Americas.

Guys Servers are finally Working, Im in Canada BTW!!!!!!

This seems to be due to an interrupted or corrupted download. This can usually be resolved by clearing your Mac App Store cache.

  1. Quit the Mac App Store
  2. Go to Terminal and type following: open $TMPDIR../C/com.apple.appstore/
  3. Move the files inside the folder to the Desktop or any temporary location (if you are confident, you can move them to Trash straight away.)
this worked for me if anyone else wants to try it. no more error and downloading fast now
