The food part of this rests mostly on the Chinese government and partially on FoxConn management. Apple probably wasn't aware the situation had gotten so dire, but now they should be, and they should step in to work with FoxConn to come up with a solution. The part that Apple definitely has the most leverage on is the non-payment of contractual bonuses. If FoxConn promised workers more pay to lure them back to work and then reneged I can certainly understand the workers' anger.
If it's a contractual issue between Apple and FoxConn, maybe apple has some leverage. If it's a management issue that lies within FoxConn being driven by the government, I wouldn't think Apple has much pull.

Do Amazon workers get all of that?
No, but amazon workers are service industry and easily trained and replaceable. Manufacturing jobs require much more skill and training, on top of this the investment in plant and equipment makes building factories in the US much more risky. So when you add all the costs up it definitely makes more sense to manufacture where labor is more readily available (cheapest). If America wants to bring manufacturing back, which we absolutely must do if we want to maintain our current standard of living, we have to become much more business friendly.

Hmmm…. I really would love working in an Apple factory in the USA. Here are my demands to keep me and hundreds of thousands of Americans working in these factories happy. We want Hourly wages of $25-$50+ an hour, $50k- $100k+
plus a year In wages and salary alone!!! We also want QUALITY medical insurance for ourselves and families costing $400-$1000+ plus a month. We want at least 3 weeks of Paid vacation, and at least 2 weeks of paid sick leave a year. We want a a defined pension plan and a hearty match on our 401k to boot!! How about other perks and benefits like extended maternity/paternity leave. Child care/ transportation assistance etc. Supplemental insurance like AFLAC etc… and on and on.

So yeah…. show me how the math works out. The all in cost to keep an American 🇺🇸 happy working in an Apple factory will be easily $100k-$150k plus a year. Most of the folks working in these China factories are costing less than $10k to ~$20k a year per worker all in cost.
I agree with everything you said and wish more people understood this. Maybe then apple store and starbucks employees wouldn't be so quick to unionize. 👍🙏

Modern slavery at work. Yes, they "may" get paid but under which conditions is another story.

However, for there to be real change, the privileged "west" (myself included) needs to change
And its easy, just keep your iPhone longer, even when stop getting new releases of iOS or similar device. That will also help with things like inflation. The constant upgrading is whats driving this insanity.

Anyone who's feeling enraged about the living and working conditions of the "slaves" in China should put their money where their mouth is and sell all of their Apple devices, and never buy another one again.
Let's see, how many will do that? Come on, raise your hands!
Weeping crocodile tears for the poor "slaves" in China, while fully enjoying the benefits of the work of said "slaves", is nothing more than sheer hypocrisy.

I'm putting "slaves" in quotes because they are anything but. Or, more accurately, they are, but they are the slaves of the Chinese government, not of Apple. Those who are fortunate enough to work for Apple are having it much better than billions of other conationals.
“those who are fortunate enough to work for Apple are having it much better”
… pretty much the same sentiment that drives and has driven slavery and capitalism in every country for hundreds of years

…cf. “ we have a special relationship with our slaves…” say slaveowners in the US south

…” she’s not a servant, she’s our helper,” says my friend in Lebanon and similarly many other countries about their migrant “workers”

I applaud the empathy toward the workers. I share that feeling.
I don’t like seeing anyone suffer under bad working conditions.

What this article seems to talk about are tactical issues created by Foxconn’s decisions.
They don’t sound like issues Apple could have prevented by clauses in their contract with them.

If Apple decided to pay Foxconn double their current amount, would these issues go away or would Foxconn have higher profits?

I have my own criticisms of Apple, but I’m not sure what Apple was supposed to do about the problems outlined in this article.
Apple/Foxconn tried bonuses up to 4X the standard pay and the workers still left the plant. There is more to this than the article reports. A story circulated at the plant late last month that eight workers living in a dorm room (!) were all found dead. Whether true or not, this sparked a panic among the kids in the dormitories and Foxconn lost control. Now the CCP has come in heavy-handed and is just making the situation worse.

China is determined to compete with the United States. That means anything goes. They are pushing their population to production levels that are unsustainable. They are building up their military in ways that are unaffordable. Their space program is a luxury they can't afford.

The French Revolution, the fall of the Czar, then the Soviet Union...you can't build a superpower on the backs of the population without eventual pushback.

Enough is enough. Apple needs to put their money where their mouth is and perform like they care about human rights and privacy, not just in some cute little ad or one liner.

I read this story on ZeroHedge the other day and the protests appear to be justified. Living conditions are borderline inhuman. Lack of food and other basic necessities.

A mass exodus of youth leaving Foxconn factories just under 2 weeks ago ... walking 2 full days and nights to reach home!
facing the shame of their home townsfolk as they didn't stick to the hard labour.
Leaving due to 8 ... 8 youths whom just died in their dormitory (either form dreadful working hours literary working to death or due to COVID; as no real 'herd-immunity' ever developed there; I hate that terminology).

Simply VERY sad ... US military support barracks (non-base) are better living conditions!
heck some USA jails look cleaner - i'm not kidding!

Its not just Apple products that Foxconn assembles yet it's always Apple's Foxconn employees that are leaving, suffering etc. NEVER any other client like Oppo, RealMe, Samsung, Sony, etc. why?!

They ALL need to get conditions changed for the better or at least move to another country for assembly and IMPROVE from the start there. I wonder if something much deeper is going on there from upper management of Foxconn.

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd., trading as Hon Hai Technology Group in China and Taiwan and Foxconn internationally, is a Taiwanese multinational electronics contract manufacturer established in 1974 with headquarters in Tucheng, New Taipei City, Taiwan.

After all many Foxconn assemblies are China.

I noticed Tim Cook keeps thumbing down posts in this thread from persons who empathize with the workers. It’s sad that people have to go through all this for something as basic as food. Apple has at least over 200 billion in hard cold cash. At least pay them, geez. I keep telling you all, Apple’s humanity and liberal arts stuff is just pure veneer.

2023 might actually be a year of unraveling for Apple. It’s too bad, because I have a lot of money invested in them, but I don’t want to associate with them on this level. Treat these people who are vital to your business success better. Todd and Cindy at the space ship in Cupertino walking around in a circle is not gonna do that.

Sold apple again already around 151. I expect it’ll tank from here. iPhone sales will take a beating. Pick it back up next year.

To be technical, this is Foxconn issue, not Apple, and Foxconn is an OEM for many other companies other than Apple.

Oh, and Foxconn is also a Taiwanese company, and like it or not, some if these Taiwanese companies are quite stingy in emerging markets (like in my country).

Obviously the ultra strict policies from the Chinese government is not helping, but let's take a step back to see who the real players are instead of merely rehashing the headlines and pointing finger at Apple.

Seriously. I’m trying to imagine myself or my family working in those conditions—it’s awful. And for what? So Apple can make even more ludicrous amounts of money, and I can replace the perfectly good iPhone I bought the year prior? If Apple doesn’t start ‘voting with their dollars’ then I will. You’d hope it wouldn’t come to that with a company that talks the talk like Apple does, but the reality speaks for itself. And in the worst case scenario, the world doesn’t need an iPhone 14 Pro this holiday season, and certainly not at the expense of exploiting people.

Lol. I’m just worrying about iPhones not shipping til January. Imagine the folks whose Christmas will be ruined. Now that’s sad.

This is not about slavery. I hope people stop misusing that word for irrelevant things.

The issue here is that the workers are stuck, locked inside the factory for weeks/months due to the Chinese government's ultra strict rule. Things would've been okay if they were provided with proper amenities and food, but apparently they are not. Contracts/payments were changed despite the promise (based on the reports). That what's causing the workers to do what they do.

And yes, we have many expats from China here, sharing horror stories of they got locked down inide their own apartment. Basically if the lockdown happened, the ones in the inside cannot go out, and the ones who happen to be outside cannot go in. You cannot even go out to buy food (unlike in some countries where you're still allowed to go out and buy necessities). And they were only provided with some rice, some spring onion, and eggs as their food. And it can last for weeks or months.

Angry Protests Break Out at Key iPhone Factory in China

Well we don’t hear about any happy protests these days do we now?

Change? Howso? Become more like them? We are giving them jobs. Let them rise up and overthrow the CCP. Let them change.

By not expecting labour to be cheap outside of Western countries.

China will eventually reach wage parity with the West. In some White collar jobs, like in Finance and Engineering they already have.

China is having a rapid population decline as Chinese people are emigrating, not getting married and having less or no babies as they become increasingly well educated. The Gen Zs are like, we aren't having it, meee more important, meee, meee!

India isn't governed by the CCP, it is a far better solution. Send them the $ and the jobs.

India is far more explitative. China is socialist, meaning the political system potects the poor and robs the rich. It's not doing that very efficiently because overdoing it will make everyone poor as business goes elsewhere. India is just as corrupt and inefficient, but the political system is in the palm of the rich for the rich. They also have a caste system to make sure that low-borns will always have low-born kids.
