I totally get it! There is something about taking that plastic off. I love new Apple tech!!
In these tough economic times I see a business opportunity. Pick up people's Apple products from their home, wrap them in new pristine plastic and then deliver them back. The customer gets the rush of opening a "new" Apple product for the low cost of $99.99.

And slap on some 5g!!

After loosing 18k euros in 2018 in a very bad crypto investment, I will keep my iPhone XS 256gb for another 10 years 😄 .

I think I’m going to need at least one big feature upgrade aside from the design and 5G to upgrade from my 11 Pro A Max. Otherwise it kind of seems like a waste.

I don’t plan To upgrade this year, moving soon and any excess money I’d want to out towards an Apple Silicon Mac.

Keeping my XS Max that I bought last year until it dies. I bought the 11 but hated the Haptic Touch screen. Gave it to my wife and got the last version of 3D Touch on an iPhone.

I can‘t afford to upgrade this year. I already have spent so much on Apple products this year. I bought a iPad Pro 2020 and a iPhone 11 in May when my 6s died. I need to pay off the phone and the iPad before spending anymore. I want to get a MacBook Air next so it will be a couple of years before I upgrade.

It’s not clear how many of the iPhones 12 have 5g but that’s obviously a key reason to upgrade this year

Or it would be if 5g rollout hadn’t slowed from coronavirus and many of us are still WFH.

So for me I’ll skip. Like many of the posters here I’ll upgrade when there is a clear gulf between my XR and new models (and I’m sure that they won’t give me PWM issues).

2021 is the year of Mac upgrades IMHO.

Very likely to upgrade from my iPhone 6 this year.

I had the 4, 4S, 5 and then the 6. Since then I’ve been really happy with this phone, but it’s finally slowed to the point where it’s somewhat painful to use now.

After seeing the USB C port go onto iPad Pro, I said I would wait for them to put one on an iPhone before I upgrade, but realistically I don’t think I can wait any more for something which they just may never do.

Wow - upgrading from a 6 to a modern iPhone is going to be a dramatic boost in everything you use the phone for.

I thought that the jump from my 7 to the XR was epic enough, but from a 6 it’ll feel like trading in a typical car from 2003 for a Tesla or other high end EV.

I always try to upgrade my tech devices yearly to something more current whenever I have saved up some cash. :)
Last year, it was a used Mac Pro 5,1 to replace my old slow Mac Mini and this year, I bought a PC gaming machine to replace my dead PC laptop thanks to my government stimulus check. Next year, I plan on upgrading my old SE 2016 phone to the smaller iPhone 12 version with more storage space. That 16Gb storage space is getting pretty TIGHT so that's my excuse to upgrade my phone next year hopefully. :)

I agree with you that 5G is not worth it right now purely from the standpoint of crazy speeds (unless you sit under a mmWave tower), but the additional spectrum can mean better signal in places where you may have dropped before or gone out of 4G LTE signal. 90/120Hz is not a gimmick - Apple themselves are using it on the iPad Pro. Definitely makes things smoother, but right now it's unclear if this will even be included on the 12.

LiDAR is absolutely a solution searching far and wide for some kind of problem to solve. I'm lost as to why Apple has leaned so hard on this junk, there must be some exec that absolutely loves giving or watching AR demos on stage. That's about all it's good for.

LIDAR - we’re all paying to beta test the tech in the Apple Glass.

I have not seen a compelling reason to upgrade from an 11 pro max to an IPhone 12.

I've not seen the iPhone 12 to decided if there is a compelling reason to change, so I'll wait until then to make up my mind.

I have the 11 Pro Max. I am finding it too big in my hands and my pinky is continually getting tired with the weight and size.

I plan to upgrade to the smaller “12”, big BUT, some roomers say that the best specs and features will be in the larger flagship, so if the smaller one is only $100 cheaper and has some really great features missing, I’ll live with this one until 2021

I’ve got an 8, and I am very torn between the 5.4 or 6.1 pro... I just can’t decide yet and will need to know the difference in features and battery life exactly. But I will definitely be getting one of the two. I’m leaning towards the pro right now as I’ve never had one before and actually enjoy photography quite a bit.

From iPhone 6 to iPhone 12 is as big a jump in generations as iPhone 3GS to iPhone 6 was, so it’s hopefully going to be mind blowing!

My thought is they assume most people use a case. I really like the SE 2016 form but my iPhone 11 with a case sits just as flat. If it means putting a better camera in it, I’m all for it. My iPhone 11 completely replaced my need for my DSLR (sold it) which has much more of a camera bump than a phone.

to answer OP question, technically I did update this year 😉
how do you shoot your kids in school plays >30-50 meters away, various light conditions, something (kids playing soccer? in distance etc...maybe you don't need dslr but surely if have kids and family you should get a dedicated camera ideally with some zoom you will need it likely

For AT&T users, it's been recently proven that their 5G network is actually slower than 4G and you can't tell the phone which network to choose. If it detects a 5G antenna, it'll connect to it whether you want it to or not - and the speeds will be slower than 4G.

So for AT&T users at least, a 5G iPhone 12 will not only not be an upgrade, but will actually be a downgrade in connectivity if you're around 5G networks.
So take that into consideration.

I always tell myself I'm not and I end up upgrading lol

But I bought an SE 2020 back in May and I realized that I don't need to spend $1000+ on an iphone when this SE2020 does 98% of what I need it to do. Sure, I wish I had a better camera but its not that big a deal when most of my camera roll are MEMES off the internet haha

I very much second this. But you'd be amazed to find out most people really don't care. It's just not important to them, they'll at best look at it once on the back of their phones a few minutes later... and that's it.

This is me.. I have an 11 Pro now, wanting to grab an SE eventually but with the 5.4” 12 coming out that will be the perfect size for me. I keep telling myself I’m going to keep my phone for at least 2 years but..

I have 4 kids. When they’re in events like that, I take a couple shots then sit an enjoy the moments. Plays/musicals, usually the school records it anyways. In the majority of circumstances, zooming can be accomplished with your feet. The best family videos and pictures I’ve ever captured are impromptu, grab the phone out of the pocket and record because it is happening right now moments. The high end dslr almost always stayed in the closet. Bought a nice kayak with the funds though 🙂🚣

Personally, I’d much rather have the likelihood of capturing precious moments than try to maximize production value by lugging around a big camera and chance missing them all together. Our photos are basically a digital journal over the years. Some of the “best” ones are because I had a tiny computer in my pocket that happens to have a camera. That is why I like the iPhone 11 so much. Picture quality is just shy of some older DSLR cameras but the instantaneous convenience is there.

This summer for example, I managed to capture myself teaching my 4 year old daughter to ride a bike. Just held the phone at my side while I pushed her along. The video is bouncy and sometimes not even pointed at her but would never have even been attempted with a full size camera. I’ll take that any day.

Additionally, people, especially parents with big clunky cameras are the most annoying people at gatherings trying to get the best angles, lighting, poses, etc. Honestly the most inauthentic representation of the moment. That is why usually school productions here are filmed by the school so they don’t have parents scrambling like mad people for the angles.

I have an 11, but considering go to 11 pro or max. Have tmo with jump on demand. Is pro a bunch better than 11? Is pro max much bigger feeling than 11?

relying on somebody telling you if the ’Pro-Max’ feels bigger in your hand, is essentially worthless. You would have to experience that yourself, because everybody has different grip styles, hand sizes, ect., based off what’s comfortable. I get that a lot of stores are not offering ‘hands-on experience’ due to the pandemic, but if you have a store near you, you’ll find what works for you versus asking random strangers online.
