My 13 Pro had two scratches on the screen. Pretty upset since the screen is supposed to be the strongest screen yet.

Purchased at an Apple store, but I only have one more week left for exchange. I’ve been checking stock daily, but I’m not confident that they will be getting stock in time for a trade.

I’m happy to hear recommendations. Stuck between a rock and a hard spot because I traded my X in and selected the monthly installments with Verizon, so I can’t do a flat out return.

Call in and tell them you want a replacement. That’s what I did and they are sending one by the end of October. I can keep this one until then.

Did you call a store or Apple? I tried Apple and they just wanted to send a “new” phone via Apple Care. I want one in fresh retail packaging.

Yea it’s unfortunate. I had a dead pixel on a new iPad Pro in May and that was a disaster to get swapped out, but I had to, because it affected the functionality. After several supervisors they finally sent me a new one before I had to send the defective one back because I was studying for the bar exam and had to have it.

The scratch on the steel rim of this iPhone isn’t as bad as that (and yours are worse than mine - attached picture), but aside from stock issues I’m also on the ATT installment plan and I don’t even want to know what a disaster returning and replacing it would be. Sucks because I bought a high-capacity model and will keep it for probably 3-4 years. Wish there was a way to cover it up. I wouldn’t even be as frustrated if it was on the backside and I couldn’t see it every time the light hit it.

I bought an iPad Air 4 last year and a week into using it spotted two dead pixels. Had to take it to my local Apple store and get it replaced. The geniuses told me to go away for an hour whilst they inspected it. Went back after the hour to be told they couldn’t find the dead pixels. I had to load up a white webpage like the Google home and point out the dead pixels, literally just stood there in the street (no one was allowed inside because of COVID). They were absolutely useless but did eventually swap my iPad for a brand new retail unit, which is perfect.

The iPhone 13 Pro (gold) I had did have some out-of-box blemishes on the shiny edges and a spotty logo on the back. But the second you touch the sides of the phone it gets covered in awful fingerprints so it's not noticeable anyway, except after cleaning it. I've now given the Pro to a colleague so I don't have it anymore, but I still have a 13 (starlight) -- which in my opinion feels far more premium than the Pro for build quality (but why couldn't you put 120Hz on it Apple, why?). The brushed edges look waaay nicer on the 13 and don't look hideous with fingerprints.

The Silver and Gold phones are the worst about the shiny sides. The Graphite is much better, and to my eye, the Sierra Blue is just a tad better than Graphite. They all still collect fingerprints and look tacky at best. In the Apple leather case, which lacks a lip to fully cover the edges, they make a razor-thin reflective ring around the whole phone. After having it a week, I don't notice it with my Sierra Blue 13 Pro unless I'm looking for it, but I don't know why you'd want to have it, period. I'll only be using it in a case, so no big deal. I commented on it to my sister, who remarked "It's pretty," but we don't share the same sensibilities on lots of things. lol

I called in as I don’t live near an Apple store and they are sending me a new one.

Set up a return and mail it back. It’s easy. Don’t even need to provide an explanation. Just send it back and buy another one.

I returned my mini to the local store yesterday. They did not ask me why I was returning it. They just took it and gave me a credit. I returned it because my carrier offered a $300 discount on the same phone a few days after launch. Mine is in a case so I wouldn't see it anyways - if you're using a full block case, then you wouldn't notice it. It's up to you as to whether or not you'd want to. You returning it would mean someone else gets to buy a phone a bit cheaper from the Refurbish store.

Just got my hands on a 13 Pro in Graphite from the Apple Store and it’s in terrible condition out of the box. Similar blemish on the shiny edge in one corner, a chip on the stainless steel frame in another, and a scratch running down the bottom next to the antenna band.

I have it every year…

This year the 13 Pro Max Sierra Blue had some discoloration on the frame which looked like stains.

The 13 Pro Max silver had a scratch on the glass back underneath the camera modul.

The 13 Pro Sierra Blue had some weird stains on the glass back.

Today I picked up a 13 Pro Max Sierra Blue which has no damage on the frame or back but it has this gap between the frame and the microphone and you are able to see some of the metal underneath...

So I am still playing the iPhone lottery and hope to get a perfect one soon.

Unfortunately I am trapped in the Apple eco system, otherwise I would consider another smartphone.

I feel for you. I have the worst luck with iPhones. Are you talking about a gap between the earphone and the frame with some metal underneath? If so, I have that. And half the demo iPhones at the "local" (over an hour away) Apple Store did as well.

Yes, exactly, the gap between earphone and frame with metal underneath.
The gap is not that wide but depending on the light I can see the metal underneath on the right side. Just annoying to play Quality Control for Apple.

Return it and get another new unit. If you do return and get another new unit, inspect in the store before you leave with the phone. That way you can ensure you get a phone that you are happy with. That is what I would do.

Why does this crap happen to me? Why do I notice it? Why does it bother me?

Anyone else have chips or damages on their stainless steel edges? I have one I can feel quite prominently with my fingernail just below the antenna line and above the silence switch.

You knew this thread was coming eventually, so here it is...

I'm busier now than I ever have been and even though I now live 8 minutes from an Apple Store I think I'll keep it. Old me would have returned this for a new one. New me has no more F's left to give or the time to give them. Just bugs when an Apple flagship device isn't perfect.
I had a flashlight issue where it worked when it wanted to and the front camera wouldn’t let me set up Face ID and worked 80 percent of the time. Hard reset, resetting the phone from iTunes didn’t work. Went to a genius twice and the finally ran a camera test that support didn’t do via phone or chat. Anyway they replaced it on the spot. They must have either replacement units or already have black box refurbs. The new phone works so much better.

Can we stop being OCD for a sec?

Firstly these phones have super polished steel bands, with shiny bits all over.
These phones are also assembled by hand in a factory, sure CNC machines are used for chassis and what not, but the final assembly are still done by hand, and humans aren't perfect by any means, and these are just your mass produced yearly released electronics, they are not a one off limited edition piece of jewelry or whatever. Also most small smudges can indeed permanently get oxidized by the steel band especially if you get the white color with the silver non PVD treated steel band, but a bit of metal polish should remove the smuge marks and minor scuffs off (scuffs you can fel with your nails are probably too deep) also metal polish can only be used somewhat okay with the silver chrome untreated/unpainted steel band, and even so too much pressure will make more scratches than what you had to begin with, it is somewhat similar to polishing scratches off glass with Cerium Oxide or jewelers rouge compound

Finally, on my old iphone 11 Pro Max and at the time Apple's most durable glass ever claim, my iphone 11 pro max brand new out of the box was scratched near the bezel, and I had to do numerous exchanges before I got one that had less imperfections. Also, some so called imperfections on Apple devices could also include batteries, on my M1 MacBook Pro, brand-new out of the box the battery capacity was like 96%

At this point, I just came to accept minor defects on mass produced consumer products. We live in a world nowadays with mas demand on everything, especially consumer electronics, and companies are pumping out with whatever little capacity they have as fast as they can, QC will suffer, but since nose modern electronic devices aren't built to last forever anyways, the QC isn't going to get better, Apple knows it and we know it. Most of use will probably swap out for a new iPhone or iPad or Mac etc every 3 or so years, well except for some of you ballers and true enthusiasts out there who gets a new phone/tablet every year or every few months lol...

From my experience, minor minor scuffs (like the physical defects you get from Apple's out of box cosmetic issues) isn't going to harm the resale market on the private used markets such as Facebook Marketplace, eBay etc..

I just live with it as long as it doesn't affect the device's functionality.

If I had a yellow tinted screen, severe backlight bleeding or defective dead pixels or stuck pixels I would probably be exchanging it.

But for minor smudge or microscopic scuff on a already chrome like polished steel band, I'd just live with it since I would probably make more deeper and larger scratches on the steel band after a week or two of daily usage lol

Or for OCD folks who doesn't like to see fingerprints or scuffs, just buy a regular 13 with the anodized aluminum sides, which is extremely durable for minor scuffings, thought aluminum does tend to dent or have chunks missing if you drop it without a case. So there is a trade off between polished steel and matte textured anodized aluminum

This is exactly what is going on with me. At the Genius Bar appointment today the guy said he couldn't see it. I explained what it looked like and how it is only visible at certain angles, etc. I even showed him pictures I took of it but to no avail. He said they didn't have replacements anyway so if I wanted I could just contact Apple about it. I feel bad about making such a big fuss about such an apparently small defect but this is a $1100 phone!

I’d be returning that as soon as I saw the damage. For the prices we pay, If it ain’t in pristine condition, it’s going straight back.

This is exactly what I have, same place and everything. I only noticed it because it can catch the light. I tried to clean it with a damp cloth and discovered it wasn't dust and instead appears to be a scratch or paint chip. If there were any Pro Max in stock near me I would get a replacement, but alas. I hate how it shows even with Apple's leather case on it.

I'm curious - what kind of permanent marker did you use and did it leave a much darker mark? I would like to try and make it less noticeable but I don't want to make the problem any worse. If you have a chance, could I possibly see a picture of yours? Thank you!
Just now seeing this, sorry for the delay. I tried to get as much light as possible. That is with the permanent marker applied. I just used a fine tipped sharpie. The sharpie does a good job of preventing the light reflection, but it doesn’t last and I had to reapply it. I wouldn’t worry about making it worse by using a sharpie.

I ordered an 11Pro and had it show up with a finish defect around the bezel. Luckily the local Apple store keeps a supply of phones for replacements in situations like this. This year I arranged pickup of my 13Pro at the store so I could look at it before I left.

Yup, it’s going straight back but my local stores are out of stock now so I’ll have to wait until I get another one. Have one on order for delivery though it likely won’t come until November, but will check store stock regularly in the meantime.
