I have a fine hairline scratch on my screen I guess it’s possible I could’ve done it, but I let nothing touch the screen before my protector came. I could only see it if the light hit it a certain way with the screen off, and now that I have the screen protector on, I can’t see it at all.

I’m very particular about my devices, and very careful with them, so I was super annoyed at first, but since I’m not sure if I inadvertently did it, I can’t really fault Apple. If anything else happens to the screen, I can get a new one with my AC+.

My silver 13Pro has a small (2-3mm) scratch in the back glass down by one of the corners. Can't feel it with my fingernail, but it will catch the blade edge of a small penknife gently dragged across it. I just decided to live with it and put it in a case rather than try to exchange and risk getting something worse.

My shipping box got wet somewhere along the way, was delivered nearly falling apart as the cardboard was separated in places. The iPhone box itself had a torn seam on one of the corners, there wasn’t any clear film to secure the iPhone box in place, just a foam block to help take up space. One seal on the bottom of the iPhone box was torn, looked cut and looked tampered with. However the iPhone itself was perfect. No blemishes. I was happy to see that. I received the Sierra blue, 1TB version. I thought of complaining, but I’m sure my efforts and breath would be a wasted effort….

I have it every year…

This year the 13 Pro Max Sierra Blue had some discoloration on the frame which looked like stains.

The 13 Pro Max silver had a scratch on the glass back underneath the camera modul.

The 13 Pro Sierra Blue had some weird stains on the glass back.

Today I picked up a 13 Pro Max Sierra Blue which has no damage on the frame or back but it has this gap between the frame and the microphone and you are able to see some of the metal underneath...

So I am still playing the iPhone lottery and hope to get a perfect one soon.

Unfortunately I am trapped in the Apple eco system, otherwise I would consider another smartphone.
There is no perfect one no matter how many times you keep swapping out. It’s a mass produced device. Half of the time people spend swapping one problem for another. It’s Apple, this is nothing new year over year. When you buy a new car do you crawl all around it with a flashlight looking for paint issues? How about when buying a house? While I get where your coming from it’s a phone not a super rare collectors item. It’s made to be used which will ultimately get its marks over time. I have played the return lottery for way too many versions. Why it’s your money and decision, it’s a waste of time.

Can we stop being OCD for a sec?

Firstly these phones have super polished steel bands, with shiny bits all over.
These phones are also assembled by hand in a factory, sure CNC machines are used for chassis and what not, but the final assembly are still done by hand, and humans aren't perfect by any means, and these are just your mass produced yearly released electronics, they are not a one off limited edition piece of jewelry or whatever. Also most small smudges can indeed permanently get oxidized by the steel band especially if you get the white color with the silver non PVD treated steel band, but a bit of metal polish should remove the smuge marks and minor scuffs off (scuffs you can fel with your nails are probably too deep) also metal polish can only be used somewhat okay with the silver chrome untreated/unpainted steel band, and even so too much pressure will make more scratches than what you had to begin with, it is somewhat similar to polishing scratches off glass with Cerium Oxide or jewelers rouge compound

Finally, on my old iphone 11 Pro Max and at the time Apple's most durable glass ever claim, my iphone 11 pro max brand new out of the box was scratched near the bezel, and I had to do numerous exchanges before I got one that had less imperfections. Also, some so called imperfections on Apple devices could also include batteries, on my M1 MacBook Pro, brand-new out of the box the battery capacity was like 96%

At this point, I just came to accept minor defects on mass produced consumer products. We live in a world nowadays with mas demand on everything, especially consumer electronics, and companies are pumping out with whatever little capacity they have as fast as they can, QC will suffer, but since nose modern electronic devices aren't built to last forever anyways, the QC isn't going to get better, Apple knows it and we know it. Most of use will probably swap out for a new iPhone or iPad or Mac etc every 3 or so years, well except for some of you ballers and true enthusiasts out there who gets a new phone/tablet every year or every few months lol...

From my experience, minor minor scuffs (like the physical defects you get from Apple's out of box cosmetic issues) isn't going to harm the resale market on the private used markets such as Facebook Marketplace, eBay etc..

I just live with it as long as it doesn't affect the device's functionality.

If I had a yellow tinted screen, severe backlight bleeding or defective dead pixels or stuck pixels I would probably be exchanging it.

But for minor smudge or microscopic scuff on a already chrome like polished steel band, I'd just live with it since I would probably make more deeper and larger scratches on the steel band after a week or two of daily usage lol

Or for OCD folks who doesn't like to see fingerprints or scuffs, just buy a regular 13 with the anodized aluminum sides, which is extremely durable for minor scuffings, thought aluminum does tend to dent or have chunks missing if you drop it without a case. So there is a trade off between polished steel and matte textured anodized aluminum
100%

I was in this camp up until about two years ago. One year I spent 2-3 months buying and returning in search of the unicorn phone. I lost personal time running back and forth to the store (closest is an hour each way) and lost time enjoying the phone itself. It’s a losing battle people continue to get into every year. While to each their own, it’s their money, generally you return a device with one very minor cosmetic issue for a device with two issues. From there your already down the rabbit hole to continue doing so to find something at least satisfactory to your liking.

Amen... a big ding on the screen out of the gate like that would be a showstopper for me.

Mine is 100% aesthetic and doesn't hinder any viewing or function. I have AppleCare+ so I may just rock this thing caseless until me or someone in my house destroys it, and pay the price to get a new one. I always, always pay to get a new screen and a new battery at the end of the 2 years(if it doesn't qualify for free, which my 11 Pro just did at 78%). That way my folks get a nice, mostly fresh phone.

**Side note, I did just notice a second larger chip to the right of the antenna near the mic at the bottom. FML.
Did you wind up keeping it?

my fifth swap finally came with a perfect screen but with this tiny chip near the antenna. Iy look likes a chunck on the frame. Bummer. I think i want to keep it, tired to go through changes and because of the perfect screen i've found that's my first priority.
You can see it with a lens, at bare eye it seems a very tiny speck of dust.
Sure i'm not happy 100%, considering what i pay for this product.

I do not believe that I've ever had a defect but:

1) My eyesight isn't what it used to be
2) It goes straight into a case so I wouldn't see it anyways
3) I don't really inspect tech gear that closely

Yep. Frame chunks missing deep scrapes out of the box. Had it on my iPhone 12 PM and my 13 PM.

My graphite Pro arrived at lunchtime and all I noticed was a pinprick type of mark in between the camera lenses.
Maybe somebody was playing darts in the loading bay.
Even so, I'm keeping it as it's not hugely noticeable.

Such has become the QC of iPhones lately, that one tends to choose their poison with regards to replacing the device. You never know what you get back😭 - and I’m referring to new out of the box devices.

Circles underneath the screen. They don’t buff out when cleaning the screen. Looks like marks from suction cups or something similar. Maybe marks left during the manufacturing of laminating the glass? Only visible in direct sunlight and super annoying when using the phone outdoors. Phone is 3 days old. Horrible QC.

Factory cutting corners again. Take that back.

No way I would keep that. That is the first time I ever saw this particular issue. Just another defect to add to the growing list of crap they are pushing out from the factory.

Anyway, never, never check your frame (metal and black material next to glass) with a magnifier..

No. Replaced them both which turned out to have good frame but uniformity issues. For both models I went through 2 and the third unit was acceptable.

It the yearly lottery ritual.. I have another shot, a decent timeframe period to return and another unit on its way. Let see.

Now I think it’s acceptable because of the beautiful screen. I checked che frame with the magnifier because I was curious, but after 2 days of use it’s full of micro scratches you can see just with a lens.

Knowing what I do after the iPhone 12 PM and 13 PM escapades. I’ll keep the first iPhone 14 pro max with a good uniform screen. Regardless of frame damage , screen gaps etc etc. 👍🏼
Apple have lowered my expectations. It seems to be working. 😂

My phones come out of the box and straight into a case. I do not inspect the phone and my eyesight isn't all that great. What I don't know about - I don't care about.

Or with one of these. It’s always primarily the top edge. Even in normal none magnification it can be seen where bright light reflects of tint pits or damage on frame edges.

Wow, that’s a pro tool I usually try to stay away from that kind of inspection.

Anyway, I agree with you: once the screen is ok, all the other minor stuff can be ignored (obviously if they are not very noticeable).

To be honest I don’t routinely use those magnification tools to inspect items. But when regularly looking at the frame from around arms distance one catches a shine or shimmer that doesn’t look normal then the tool comes in handy 🤣

Basically the frame damage can be seen without tools.
