UPS just updated my delivery date from Monday the 24th, to now Tuesday the 25th. In the description, it says that my package was not able to be loaded on the plane as scheduled. This whole thing with the pre-order going smoothly and then the actual delivery has been a nightmare. In years past, I have never experienced this. I know it's just an iPhone, but I pre-ordered specifically so I can get it on launch day. It's pretty bad as UPS and APPLE are both telling me to contact the other, meanwhile, there had been no explanation why this was happening in the first place. It went from Kentucky back to Hong Kong, and now stuck in Anchorage... Something screwy is going on and the Apple Specialist said there's nothing that can be done right now but wait.

Mine still says
Louisville, KY, United States 09/22/2018 6:11 A.M. Departure Scan

Scheduled Delivery Updated To:
Monday, 09/24/2018

I'm losing hope that it'll even be delivered tomorrow. Reading other peoples' experiences and how UPS is making these fake logs for where the phone "should be"..
It's pretty frustrating since I pre-ordered online so I could get launch day delivery and most the Apple stores have the phones readily available now.

Honestly it’s UPS. Once it’s scanned from the origin it’s in UPS hands any delays is on them. Apple did what they needed to do.

Well finally my original order was refunded and released and I was able to order a new T-Mobile IPhone XS Max Space Gray 64GB. Scheduled to be delivered Oct 8th- 15th. Will see how accurate that is and the strange shipping UPS will do all over again...

So, for anyone whose phones were stuck in customs and are now missing (mine is still in HK) if you can find stock and they will let you buy it, it IS possible to cancel the phone enroute. I called Apple and they redirected the shipment to their warehouse. Said I’ll receive the refund within a few days of it arriving. No argument at all, it was no different than if it hadn’t shipped yet.

I was paying in full for both phones, so no idea how it works if you’re using an upgrade. I did receive a cancellation email, so perhaps it will reset your upgrade?

Awesome advice, and that's what I just did. Apple said they have to a do a 2-day investigation with UPS as to where my shipment actually is, and I was like no problem and good luck with that. They are refunding me as soon as the investigation concludes.

I got a new phone at an Apple store last night, and I love it. UPS? Not so much.

I disagree, they are both to blame. Before it even went to UPS, Apple quoted the delivery date of 9/21. Apple had 6 days to get the product into the US, to avoid delays, but they didn’t.
From what i have seen it looks like some custom delays may have delayed some shipments which then put to many on UPS in 1 day thus backing the last few up delaying them

My 256GB XS Max had an original delivery window of 10/1-10/8. It has now left Louisville and is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow, 9/24.
Mine was like that, but now UPS just removes the estimated delivery date and my tracking only shows it arriving in china

My phone was supposed to be here tomorrow. It shows departing China but just has a status of rescheduled delivery. It originally showed shipped on 9/21. I thought I was alone until I came here

I Think your phone is on the same shipment as mine, it says the exact same as yours with a delivery tomorrow which i highly doubt

Well, my iPhone is stuck in Louisville... Called UPS and they said that it will be delivered on 9/24, but I don’t see any movement nor flights scheduled. Called Apple and they said “it is what it is”.

When the UPS says clearance in progress, does that mean it is in customs?

No. I actually called UPS when my status did that to ask. They said they send the paperwork to customs ahead of time to help make the process take less time. She told me that status means the paperwork is submitted. After mine did that it still had not left China. Since then mine supposedly departed Hong Kong but that was over a day ago.
