I won‘t buy anything from Samsung. I love the iPhones just not the sizes. But in case mine breaks I will get the X-R. Whatever R stands for.
R seems to infer reaching more people as it's their budget phone ;)
btw, the Xs is smaller than the Xr

WOW! I am very surprised that they even discontinue the iPhone X which basically is just 1 year old...uff
R.I.P SE :(

The iPhoneX is now the Xs, which is predictable. However, I fail to see anything that might entice me to upgrade a phone that is only 10months old and which I really like. Anyone that wants a larger screen, I understand. However, to trade the X for the Xs would provide what benefits.......some nuanced enhancements with the camera, a better speaker (irrelevant if you use AirPods), new gold color, loss of 3D touch (HomeKit ??).....what am I missing?

Thank You, Mister Cook, for eliminating the only small phone in your line up. The only Phone, that is not a ridiculous phablet.
Steve would have never allowed this.

Ah, I see you got an early copy of this book:

Steve Jobs Book What I Would've Done.jpg

You are totally right!!!

Steve made a controversial decision by selecting Bozo-Cook as new CEO.

He should have picked Will Ferrel instead.

Controversial? Certainly wasn’t at the time. And hell, Apple is more profitable now than ever, so it’s obviously worked out. Complain about Cook all you want - but, again, stop pretending Steve was perfect and never made a bad or controversial decision.

To everyone saying that the SE is going to be your last iPhone that you buy... what are your alternatives? None. Because no one makes phones that small, and those that do, won't in a year or two because the demand isn't there sadly.
6 months ago, I sold my SE and bought an X - and although the SE was a great phone for a long time, the X isn't really that much bigger to use but gives you so much more screen and is much more functional for anything other than texting, email and the rare web search. The majority of users, not all, but the majority use their phones for much more than that these days. It's their camera, their games console, their on the go cinema etc.

Hopefully in years to come, when technology and the cost of the bezel-less screens comes right down in comparison, then Apple may well bring one out. But ultimately, if the SE was making money, they'd have kept it. They've been cheap for a long time now, almost given away by some companies (free phone and £10 a month contract for example).

Seeing the new range of phones, I'll be staying with my X. It does all I need, is a great phone spec wise, and has been faultless since purchasing it, has been cased from new and still looks like new. Plus, no one is going to know it's not the latest anyway as there's no distinguishing differences really.

So they did what they've done in the past. Not surprising. Those complaining had plenty of time to buy one to this point.
Yes, they did what they've done countless times before...improved the iPhone. What continually amazes me is how they continue to hold press events as if they were doing something earth shattering.

PPI for OLED and LCD are measured differently because Apple uses PenTile OLED.

The actual PPI is closer to 300 for the iPhone XS and XS Max.

The effective density is greater, as a dev (and someone involved in some work in optics/cameras), I've done quite a bit of comparisons, and the X can get more content, due to greater clarity at smaller type sizes (even with the their specific OLED implementation), that was my point vs. the LCD of the new 6.1 phone. So physically bigger (on the 6.1") might not translate into effectively "more" vs. the X/XS.

It’s targeted at the 7S and 8 owners, and people using the annual upgrade programs.

Nice, balanced line up for phones. Something for everyone, except of course the apple haters and bashers - they will always find something to cry about.

This is a very sad day for me. As somebody who has been using Apple products since 1981, I am deeply disappointed.

It's about ergonomics. I want a phone that fits in the palm of my hand.

I have an iPhone SE because it's got a 4-inch screen. I have never upgraded any further because I do not want a phone that is any larger than 4 inches. Price and affordability have nothing to do with it for me. It's ridiculously simple. I want a phone that fits in my shirt pocket, because that's how I choose to carry my phone.

Also I'm nearsighted by nature, so I can very comfortably read books in small type on my 4-inch iPhone SE by removing my eyeglasses and holding the phone about six inches from my face. I want a phone that is so small and light that I can hold it in one hand, hold it up to my face and read books on it while i'm lying on my back in bed. I have read hundreds of Kindle books and iBooks on my iPhone SE (and previous models of iPhone and iPod Touch); it's my preferred device for all reading tasks.

4.7 inches, as in the iPhone 6 and 7 line, is too large for me. The 6+ and 7+ at 5.5 inches were much too large. Now the smallest phones that Apple sell are even larger, at 5.8 and 6.5 inches.

I have always laughed at people using phones with shattered screens. I have never cracked or shattered a screen on any phone I've owned because I have a small phone that I always keep safe in my shirt breast pocket, which has a flap over it. I'm so attached to my iPhone and this method of using a phone that I have taken to only wearing shirts with a breast pocket with a flap on it. I've adapted my wardrobe to work with my phone. It's all very practical and it works very well for me.

I suppose one benefit that Apple is going to get out of these huge new phones is that there will be many more accidents and shattered screens which will increase their profits for repair work.

So Apple has made their decision that the desires and needs of people like me, loyal Apple customer that I have been for almost 40 years, don't matter in their scheme of things. So I will hang on to my iPhone SE with its 4-inch screen and 640 x 1136 rendered pixel resolution, until it wears out and dies. If there are new features and iOS versions that won't run on my iPhone SE, then I will choose to do without those new operating systems and features, because it's all about ergonomics for me and the Apple iPhone is no longer ergonomic.

I certainly hope Apple comes around and, with their vast manufacturing capabilities and economies of scale, decides once again to offer a new-generation phone in a 4-inch form factor.

Does anyone have the monthly break downs for what the iPhone Xs and Xs Max will be through Apple Upgrade program?

The XS 256GB works out to exactly the same as what I'm currently paying for the X 256GB.
TBH I was hoping the 256GB would be cheaper this time around.

The XR is kinda tempting since its $13 p/m cheaper (256GB version).
But I guess I'll just go for the XS.
Big screen I don't need - I like the smaller X size (and I had two Plus sized phones in the past and don't miss the size).

Good point. I actually was hoping for an update to the SE, but really wasn’t surprised that not only it didn’t get an update, it also got discontinued.

It’s interesting, before the iPhone 6 was released, a LOT of people were complaining about how small the screen on the iPhone was compared to other phones. Now that the iPhones have bigger screens, people are complaining that they’re too big.

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

The weird thing with the 6 was that they went to big and bigger, v.s. keeping a smaller phone and just adding a bigger one. Maybe it comes down to hardware design. It's much easier to pack a lot of features in a bigger phone.

I don’t understand why the iPhone X would not be supported by Apple and discontinued?
The X is still supported. Just not sold any longer. There's a limit to how many / which older phones they keep. The X with the more expensive to produce OLED screen would have been too close to the price of one of the others if they had kept it. Personally I like the Xr. I've never been overly impressed with OLED.
