Sounds like they're all getting ready for the launch. The hints with "software update required" could mean that Apple activates ApplePay with the release of iOS 12. Announcement at the keynote in September? I know that a software update is not needed to activate ApplePay but why not connect the launch and the new iOS release this time?

Maybe because Apple Pay Launch in Germany is not that important as we may think it is. Activation is server side, that does qualify as a software update as well in my book ;).

This would not explain the difference between iOS 11 and iOS 12 :) iOS 12 reacts in another way if you try to add the mentioned cards.

iOS 12 is as of now just a beta with all the good and bad to come with a beta.

But iOS 12 is not that far away so we will see soon. Would be disappointing if the launch would be indeed much later then iOS 12 public release.

I would have it expected to the release of iOS12 or at least at shipping of the new iPhones. But some rumors about october going around... so let's see. A few weeks back and forth would not matter to me.

Gives some banks additional time to overthink their position and connecting their clearing :D

Apple Pay has never launched on a .0 release and no launch has ever been in either August or September. Apple's servers will be getting a good battering for a couple of weeks in September and macOS 10.14 is due mid/end October. I would keep my eyes peeled for a launch in the first 2-3 weeks of October. I think I shared the dates 10/17th. Tuesday/Wednesday is seems to be a must for a launch. It has never been on any other weekday ;)

PS: I'm guesssing, yet based on years of empirical evidence :D

just wanted to confirm this... maybe this List is helpful for you (sorry, it's german):
So, Version was a .0 release once and release days are mostly Tue or Thu, but not always

Confirms what I said (apart from the fact possibly Thursday as a launch day). Recently release days mostly Tuesday/Wednesday and an Apple Pay launch has never coincided with the launch of a .0 release. It has with other dot releases, but just take a look at the Skandinavian/UAE launch. Your table also (I can't check everything) has other false information. iOS 11.0.3 was released on the 11th October 2017. So there were 3 dot releases after iOS 11.0 until the launch of Apple Pay there a month later. Apple doesn't usually launch big services (at least in recent times) together with the big software updates.

Apple Pay Germany will most certainly not launch when iOS 12 is released and won't in the weeks thereafter. If we're lucky, possibly a late September release. And if some of the rumours are true, the new iPhones (at least the follow-up to the X) won't come out until early October. So no big rush for Apple ;-)

@ sir-hd

I don’t know which rumors you heard but the word going around is that Apple will hold the keynote on Tuesday 12th. The new iPhone X and iPhone X Plus will be available for pre order in the same week for the US and a week later for Europe. The cheap iPhone (iPhone lite/9 whatever) is the one that will be available in October. Not the X.

I don't have time to find the link, but the recent setbacks at TSMC have (apparently - I think it was 9to5Mac) caused delays in shifting the chips they need for their flagships. But honestly: I don't really care. I'm just going to wait and not speculate and more and join in on this conversation as it keeps going back and forth. I'm just deducting from what WAS. And with Apple that's usually a fairly safe bet.

On another note: After being in contact with ING DiBa they have basically between the lines told me to stop bothering them ("SHOVE IT!") and they wrote to me that they won't reply to me any more reg. Apple Pay. Hang on, I only once replied to an answer to my original email once and asked a further question?! What a way to treat a customer... In all my years of banking I have never experienced such a thing. I will be terminating my accounts. Good riddance! I don't care if they join Apple Pay or not.

250ish M ApplePay customers worldwide. Adoption outside USA much higher then on home soil.
As NFC (or even EMV) is not that popular in the US... no suprise. We had it a few times, Europe is much more developed in the necessary infrastructure for Apple Pay and magnetic stripe usage is nearly dead for years.

@sir-hd
So bad response? A little bit thin-skinned the guys, aren't they?

Still betting in curve as a practical work around for customers without direct support.

Seems ING-DiBa got a very huge ********* about their policy regarding Apple Pay. and if they react like that to a question bout Apple Pay, there is maybe a chance they change their mind...

I just believe they get hammered with support requests for this issue and not all employees feels the same than the management.
I do believe that there is more going on. I do know, that Ing-Diba is more and more centralizing their stuff to the Netherlands.so no real employees in Germany anymore, especially in the IT departments.
Might be one thing why they don't want to do something right now.

Sounds like an explanation. But that could be something they could tell ppl, without ****ing them off.

To the cards: I have ordered an American Express Payback Card and going to have a look at Hanseatic Bank. And a further look at Comdirect. I still give ING-DiBa a chance to change their mind till i get enough time to do that complete switch. Cause I do like the debit cards, to see the real actual balance...

Yep, a really bad response. I hate this saying "customer is king" (or I think you Germans also say "Kunde ist König", right?), because some take the liberty of thinking they are almighty and that the sun shines from their a**e. They also think they can treat employees like dirt. I hate that and have to side with shop assistants or call agents when that happens.

But in this case I don't like being treated like an idiot and expect a bank to respond to my emails and questions appropriately. I spent a lot of time writing a detailed and very friendly email to them and that response is not just putting me off banking with them, but has made me downright angry. If I had spammed them with hundreds or tens of emails: Ok. But not after one reply querying some of the points they responded to.
