There are certainly use cases where the iPad can replace a laptop computer. In my case, I don't do art, but rather handle a lot of email, scheduling, and review/annotate documents that other people prepare for me (using the pencil). I got rid of my 11 inch MacBook Air and used the iPad instead for these tasks. It's been great.

had an ipad before because iphones sucked for gaming (3.5-4 inch to game??? come on). (had an iPad 2 & ipad mini 2)
iphones became bigger and i used ipad lesser for a plused sized phone. (IPhone 6S + and iPhone XS Max)
now i'm seeing the tendency to come back to ipad again after they did some breakthroughs.

sure the prices are a little bit higher than normal, but the performance itself is worth justifying the increase because then it allows a bit of leeway to slow down over the many years. preordered mine and can't wait. given my mini 2 lasted almost 5 years, and still fast with iOS 12 without even getting it serviced, this new ipad should last even longer than that.

I find the price of the iPad, new keyboard and Pencil to be too high, so I'm just not gonna buy one. Pretty simple. My 9.7 Pro, keyboard and Pencil still work just as well as they did the day I bought them.

at least you are being humble and honest... some people think they are entitled to rage (just because its the internet, NO) and close off other people's opinions lol when you can act it out professionally without getting worked up in anyway.

also pretty sure they built the 9.7 Pro with longetivity in mind so I'd say it'll last at least another 2-4 years easily... unless something else better comes along that introduces a bigger breakthrough in whatever it is "performance, design etc"

Agree. I was thinking about apps that are still only available on the Mac. And I use the pencil for everything too - not just art because sometimes the iPP doesn’t respond to my fingers.

Increasingly, I am using my iPad for most home computing stuff (all web based browing, apps, word processing, excel, ec), plus I can use it as as my primary storage device for media, photos and such.

My laptop is my tertiary device as I don't open it for weeks. I use it to remote into a Windows machine at work.

I could totally justify spending $1,500 on a fully kitted iPad Pro that will last three or four years.

My issue is the laptop - Apple is not providing a sub $1,000 laptop with a good screen that I can use for work occasionally. I'm looking more and more at the Surface Laptop 2.

No one is pointing a gun at your head to buy the new model. BMW and Mercedes aren't robbing people by charging a premium price for a car, nor are airlines who charge a premium price for first class seats. If you can't afford it, then life goes on.

Thing is Mercedes and BMW make the best cars in the world atm how can you compare an overpriced basic gadget to a super premium car that can take you anywhere in the world and add status to your life.

Probably the worst analogy ever made son.

Because the iPad Pro is a "super premium" tablet. Not a basic one.

also Audi FTW, BMW and Mercedes are not making the best cars. Never have

They certainly are you should do some research , but looking at your current location means you pretty much know jack since American Muscle , Chevvy , Camaro is all US folk is familiar with and they are losing even that market to BMW and Benz because alot of Americans got smarter and realised EU cars are the best. Mercedes is called the King of the Roads for a reason.

One more time an iPad is just an iPad. Repeat after me.

Sold my 2018 iPad to move to an Xs MAX. I can justify $ for a primary device but definitely not a secondary or tertiary.

This was my thinking when I got my Max and today has convinced me that I made the right decision. I don’t use my 10.5” as much as I should now I’ve got a decent laptop, it’ll do me fine for the foreseeable. No thanks, Apple.

My point is they are companies charging a premium price whether it is a $10 slice of pizza or $2000 bottle of wine. They aren't obligated to charge you anything other than what they want to charge you. And you aren't obligated to buy them.

Agreed. My wife uses her iPad Pro (last gen now...) and Apple Pencil for her PhD in biology. It has replaced paper for her and she loves it more than anything. Apple Pencil is definitely the best stylus ever (I've used it).
Question is, is the new Pencil 33% better than the old one? Because that's how much they've raised the price by.

Though the basic "smart cover" (not the keyboard case) probably takes the biscuit: £45 for the basic iPad, £55 for the 10.5" iPad Pro, £85 for the 11" iPad Pro. That's not related to additional features, it's simply gouging people who have shown willingness to buy the more expensive iPad.

You're right an iPad is just an iPad. But this is an iPad Pro.

Also I hate American cars. I literally just said I like Audi/VW. But yeah, Mercedes and BMW don't make the best cars, its all opinion.

When iPhone XR 64GB starts at $749 I don't see what's shocking about 11" iPP 64GB starting at $799.

It's a gigantic iPhone XR with the cellular modem swapped for a better processor.

And these kilobuck iPads are only as good as long as the battery holds up. Expensive high end audio that works for decades, yes. Expensive high end tablet with continually deteriorating battery, no. I’ll go regular iPad.

I’m Apple through and through but their pricing strategy is now definitely testing dedicated Apple users like myself.

Am I really willing to pay well over £1000 with accessories for only 64GB of memory?

The way I see it, the issue for consumers is due to a lack of solid competition in the tablet market. Apple rule this with the iPad and have a monopoly on it so they control the prices we pay. They demand a high price and, upto now, we have been paying in.

Remains to be seen if we will still want to keep paying Apple that much in the near future.

For now, I can’t see any decent forthcoming competition from other manufacturers for but I have a feeling the Chinese will be coming.

This year, I’m changing my iPhone XS Max to a Huawei Mate 20 Pro and would do the same with the iPad if there was another tablet to compete at the high end with iPad.

I personally think the new iPad Pro is a great piece of tech, just not at those prices.

Do bear in mind how quickly iPads depreciate in value as well. Yeesh.
I think they lose most of their value in the first twelve months, so using them longer helps with depriciation. I upgraded this year from my 2014 iPad Air 2 to a 2018 iPad (not Pro). So if you maybe use the device for three or four years it is not that bad.

Resale value matters to me.
It shouldn’t, unless you’re buying an appreciable asset like a house or investing in the stock market. Worrying about resale value of depreciating luxury items is foolish, and resale value is even less relevant if this is for your job or workplace.
