Try this build once. See if it makes a difference.

It works for me.

Hi barracuda156, legacy-support of MacPorts looks like a very good thing. Unfortunately, I installed it and it did not change behavior of the downloaded binaries - maybe it works only when compiling a project?

Hi wicknix - your build works on 10.6.8 ! Marvellous! Did you use MacPorts to take care of strndup or was it a more general compiler setting? Thank you so much for taking care of this issue!

So the last Snow Leopard users have again a set of good browsers: ArcticFox, InterWeb, SpiderWeb, Firefox 52.9.1 nightly. I personally like ArcicFox the most, so I am writing my comment with AF 40 - but I am glad we have the choice between several modern browsers - wicknix, you saved our old Macs, and rmottola, thank you so much for keeping ArcticFox modern! Yes, InterWeb is a very strong competitor to ArcticFox, and I am really glad having both available!

I'm late, but I had the same issues and Nielshutch. I will try Wicknix's updated link. Thanks Wicknix.

Quick question though: Is there a link for that Firefox 52.9.1 Nightly I can get? I'm sure I can search, but if someone has a reliable source, that would be great.

However it hasnt been updated in a long time. Interweb basically picked up where it left off (same 52.9 code base) with some code borrowed from UXP (pale moon / basilisk) and tenfourfox as well.

I gave it a shot but it wouldn't open. The first message it gave flashes on the screen too fast to read. But the fact that the arctic fox icon doesn't appear in applications gave me an idea it wouldn't work as the previous two versions also didn't display the icon.

Thanks Wicknix. I'd like to try and get Arctic Fox working before trying that, because I suspect that if it's old, it won't work well for me. But has anyone tried the Firefox Legacy with YouTube yet? Does it work? Does it block ads?

I'm limping along using Spider Web for YouTube; but it only works with low-res (480p) videos and is slow. It takes a long time to load a video and each click: to make it full screen, to speed up the video, etc. takes a long time to register. But thankfully, the adblocking works.

OK, I did get it running, there's some real progress compared to the earlier upgrades (all since v.27.12), but it's still not quite there. Here's the procedure I followed, repeated twice to be on the safe side, and the sequence of "events":

- Launch a new/clean installation, as per post 1200 under a. and b. (making a backup of ~/Library/Application Support/Arctic Fox for later use). Regarding point c., the folder where AF gets put doesn't seem to matter.

- -->
ImportSettings&Data.jpg

- Crash #1, relaunch

- AF opens normally, completely “bare”. Quit AF.

- Open in a text editor (TextWrangler) the profile.ini file contained in the new ~/Library/Application Support/Arctic Fox folder, change the new name wxyz.default to the name of the old, backed-up Profile folder.

- In that same new ~/Library/Application Support/Arctic Fox, remove the new wxyz.default Profile that has just been created and copy the original one (from that same backup of Application Support/Arctic Fox.) Overwriting instead of removing may not work (don't ask).

- Launch AF --> Crash #2, #3, #4 and… #5

reopen.jpg

- “Reopen” each and every time, --> surprise:

refresh.jpg

- “Refresh” --> new message (went away too fast for a screenshot) according to which everything-everything has now been imported. Depending on your point of view, it's lying, or it's almost telling the truth.

- I'll buy the latter, because contrary to earlier attempts, History (6 months), Bookmarks (way over a 1000), Passwords, Theme have apparently been imported properly.

- On the down side, neither AF's Preferences nor the Addons (about 30 of these) were imported in the process. Bummer, because in my case it would take days of free time to restore them all, not counting possible incompatibilities and need for searching for alternatives.

- I haven't had time to check everything, like for example, whether the Cookies were imported too. But I had to go back to 27.11, which I'm using 24/7 minus sleeping time (mine) — also to post all this now.

Questions now, primarily to @wicknix. But all replies are welcome, of course:

1. Is there a way to export/import AF's preferences “in bulk”?

2. I cannot remember whether this has been discussed earlier: why only those three browsers — couldn't earlier versions of AF (or Firefox or whatever) also be selectable in the dialog box Import Settings and Data?

3. This has been discussed at some point in this thread, but the answer at the time was that it wasn't possible: having two separate versions of AF, each with their own plist and Application Support subfolder, so that they could run at the same time. Anything new in this respect? OK, I now have another possibility, slightly more cumbersome, but that's only because I've just inherited another machine with the same specs: setting everything up on it at my own leisure, then transfering the final profile back to the main machine.

4. @ @wicknix: really nice of you to have brought us this 32-bit version, but is there a chance that we might get a 64-bit one for the same price? Also, while we're here, any update of SpiderWeb on its way?

Folks, apologies if some of this sounds a bit confused, but that's in line with the times, as well as with the time of night here. If anything needs to be edited or whatever, please tell me.

1) Good question. No clue. Short of digging through the changelogs i haven't a clue what's been done to AF in the last 2 years.
2) Another good question. No clue.
3) It is possible, but not an easy task. The source would have to be modified to change the profile directory and the actual binaries name, and then rebuilt. This way your computer would think it's 2 separate browsers. Too much work involved to be practical.
4) Possibly, and possibly. I gave ownership of AF to Riccardo because i lack the time and interest. I have too many other projects to look after. I feel it should be on him to make the builds now, but maybe next time i boot the mac pro i will as it only takes 10 minutes to build on that machine. SpiderWeb for whatever reason didn't take off as well as i thought it would have sadly. Analytics show interweb having the most page views and downloads by a landslide. So maybe when i boot the MP again as it has to share 2 monitors, mouse and keyboard with about 7 other machines, and i've kinda been stuck in the PowerPC mood the last few months. ;-)

Cheers

Well folks, no luck at all. This time, I did something drastic. Whereas I had installed all the updates that came after 27.11 over the existing installation (attempting to take over the existing profile), this time I did a real clean install of sorts:

a. removed the folder ~/Library/Application Support/Arctic Fox
b. removed the files ~/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.arcticfox.plist and org.mozilla.arctic fox.plist (don't ask)
c. copied both the 32 and the 64-bit versions in the Applications folder itself (that's because for ever I've had all internet-related programs in a folder of their own inside Applications, but some programs don't like it.)

- on both a 2009 Core 2 Duo and a 2011 Core i7.

On both machines, I got right away the same result as ‪nielshutch‬:
I have the same problem on my 2009 MBP with 10.6.8.

That's curious, really. At the time, when you offered both of them to us, there was a really important feature that was missing in Interweb (can't remember which, I'd have to dig), so it was a no-go from the start. Whereas SW, I use it everyday, almost as much as AF, for stuff that I like to auto-delete when quitting. Also, it often saves me a trip to Linux (and having to bend my old mental fingers on the difference between +c/v and Ctl+c/v.)

How nostalgic-romantic of you ;-). I've still got my old PwB G4 with OS9 and GoLive, which I used to build websites with. That was almost 20 years ago, ain't built no website since.

Else, re. 1, 2 and 3: thanks as usual, wicknix. At this point I guess I'll revive the other machine. Btw., it has just crossed my mind that I should repeat yesterday's tests after disabling all the Addons — who knows, they might get imported in that state?

Hi wicknix,
the 64-bit version of AF 40 runs great. I am just writing this text with it on SL 10.6.8. Great to have a working actual 64-bit version! And thanks for the download-link that directly let us SL users download the files without having to use a Linux VM!

By the way, in my case I still use the AF profile from version 27, works both in 32- and 64-bit AF 40. It seems I am a lucky user. For web sites I cannot access with any of those browsers, I use a VirtualBox VM with 32-bit Linux Slitaz. Fast but no VB Guest Additions, so I cannot use shared folders. Maybe not the ideal solution to transfer files via a USB stick....

I use this one: https://www.osboxes.org/linux-lite/#linux-lite-36-info
Briefly: Shared folders and everything else OK, but no drag&drop, and shared clipboard only unformatted. Will run latest versions of Firefox and Pale Moon, but (apparently) not those of Librewolf or Electrum. Updating Python seems to be the problem in Linux 16.04. As far as I've been able to test, newer versions of Linux Lite require a later version of VirtualBox than 4.30.40, last one to run in 10.6.8.

Im guessing because of this and this. InterWeb for instance only supports ecmascript 2017 and g00gle and M$ like to break everything that isn't running their browsers.
