I don’t get excited about phones any more. I just buy the biggest phone Apple offers every two years, it’s slightly nicer than my last phone, then I keep it for two more years. Rinse, repeat.

I never get myself excited until I actually see it announced, but I have a 13 pro max currently so I doubt ill upgrade. My wife with her 12 pro max may go for it though

Still biding my time with an 11. I definitely like the new features and even have a magsafe charger ready to go that my wife uses for her 13 pro. Her pro motion display has got me itching to upgrade though.

11,12 and 13 never got me excited to upgrade my X. 14 on the other hand does. Will get the Pro Max and prob keep it for the next five years.

I have a 12pm and I can't wait to get my 14 pro or pro max. I used to upgrade every year but as I get older I like spacing it out a little more, so the design changes always warrant a upgrade for me. X, the switch to square sides and now the reduction of the notch. hyped to see what they pack into this new camera system.

Yes, because it's a year of practical upgrades.

On the Pro side, 48MP sensor will significantly improve image quality and night mode shots. X65 baseband improves power efficiency due to 4nm.

On the non-Pro, the 6.7-inch display is what many mainstream consumers want. Some dismiss the A15, but the upgrade to 6GB memory is far more useful than A16. Most people aren't complaining of lack of speed, it's apps and tabs that close in the background due to insufficient memory.

On both models, you now get AF front camera and emergency SMS.
Kind of like they should add a letter to designate an incremental update that improves upon the similar exterior. Something that really resonates with people to indicate the upgrade that they won't necessarily notice right away just by looking at the outside of the phone.

Something.... "S" sounding... Something that starts with "S".

Essssssssssssssssss.... hmm.

Well, they'll think of something one day when they pull their heads out their butts.

My ultimate wish would be 14 Max (not pro) with ProMotion display and USB-C.
Very strong chance we'll see both for the 15.

Apple will likely introduce ProMotion to the non-Pro models next year as it'll be two years since it came to the Pro and they'll need to show a big enough improvement spec-wise (after the non-Pro 14 receives barely any spec bump this year). USB-C is almost a certainty with rulings in Europe forcing Apple to implement it, although there's a small chance they could delay that to 2024 instead.

I have an iPhone 12 so the 14 based on the rumours isn’t exactly ‘exciting’ as such. It’ll be a slightly better version of what I have already and i’ll still be viewing the same iOS interface so the changes are subtle.

If there is a price hike, i’ll be getting a 13 Pro quite probably anyway. I just need a better battery than what I have had on the 12 which is the worst iPhone to date that I’ve owned for battery life.
100% with you there. Am a 12 Pro user and the battery is unbearable. I have to charge twice every day without fail. I assume you live in Liverpool or some other city which means most likely 5G is hammering your battery too.
It’s because I’d this im considering moving to the max model but really don’t like the idea of the added weight and unwieldy design. If the standard size 14 pro offers enough improvement over the 12 pro battery then I’d prefer to stick to the smaller form factor.

Just two weeks for the announcement. Are you excited for this years iPhone?

I gotta say I’m more excited for this year than last year, although still not much. I mean, what really spikes my interest is the new 14 Max model for improved battery life for under 1000€ I hope, the new design (just to see some visual changes) and maybe AOD (but this feature I wouldn’t even use).

Not much else, I’d say. Would be cool to see a big camera upgrade, but we don’t see that from year to year. I have an iPhone 12 and don’t see much reason to upgrade. 120Hz is cool but on an iPad; not as much on a phone, where iPhone is already SUPER smooth.
I'm also exited I love tech and progression. Posting this from a new MacBook Air M2 and it is incredible as a light but also productive machine!

It's quite funny that the only thing I'm excited for is a USB-C port on a phone. I really can't think of anything else they can 'do' to a smartphone to make it more interesting for its actual purpose - though I'd be lying if I said that I want to use my phone more during a typical day. It's bad enough watching teenagers literally glued to them everywhere I go.

But that's just the laws of physics. Smartphones in general are a mature product category and as such there's less room now for innovation without actually entering a new market; what is a smartphone after all, if not just a pretty pocket-sized computer with a camera slapped on the back? 'Bold' new colours and materials don't make it any more useful for day-to-day activities.

This is why Apple and other brands are banking so much on their camera technology. The iPhone Pro models exist solely for the purpose of upselling to basic features that have existed on consumer cameras for decades (a 50-80mm portrait lens) along with features that have a 'want' more than a 'need' appeal (e.g. ProMotion) for a small device. They are not catered to 'professionals', and if they were, Apple would have adopted USB-C a long time ago to support transferring 4K video and other media.

What's sad about all this is that the compact camera market has been annihilated not because the image quality has been superseded (though there are subjective arguments regarding post-processing), but because people now value convenience over larger image sensors, the flexibility of an optical zoom and the requirement to actually have patience and time to think before taking shots, rather than whipping out the phone camera and going into machine gun mode because they saw something that looked mildly interesting. I posted recently about families going to Disney World and literally pinching-to-zoom for a shot that they either queued and/or paid for with a man in a stuffed costume. The world has gone mad.

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see where the likes of Apple take camera sensor technology beyond here.

I have been the iPhone train since the 3. After a few annual upgrades, I started upgrading every other year, typically when a new design came out. By the time I had the X, I figured that I was doing it wrong, and decided to switch to buying a new phone on the second year, or the refinement of the new design.

That concept got squashed when the battery on my X swelled, popping the screen out. I ended up with an 11pro about 3 months before the 12 came out. Mind you, I was waiting for the 13 at the time.

I will get the 14pro

1) Magsafe (I gave been wirelessly charging for years)
2) better low light camera is important to me
3) while I’d like a USB C connection, I just don’t plug it in much
4) top of the CPU + battery curve for this design
5) still trying to decide if I will upsize to Max this go round

Of course, I could be persuaded to skip again if the rumored specs are shown to be hype next week at the Far Out event. Most of the rumors have held up before, stabilizing in the last months before the Sept events.

I have a 13 Pro and I am updating this year but ONLY because it means I can pass my 13 Pro to my wife, and her 11 Pro onto my Dad. That way everyone benefits from an upgrade. If my Dad didn't still have the original SE then I wouldn't be bothering.

As for the 14, I don't consider the hole punch to be an improvement over the notch because there is two of them and for the most part I expect it to feel very much like my 13 Pro. I'm interested in the new purple colour, but I'll only notice it when unboxing and never again after I pop a case on.

To top it off it looks like there is also going to be a price hike, so along with the energy crisis and cost of living increases I'll probably stop wasting money on new smartphones for a few years after this.

I live in South Wales but I think the sometimes patchy signal drains my battery more. I am hoping Apple realised the mistakes they made with the 12 and this was improved somewhat.

I am actually, solely because I haven’t liked the 12 pro’s battery life since I got it. I’m on the fence but am leaning towards even going with the max size, to increase my battery life. Im one of those that keeps screen brightness pretty high all day so battery life is at a premium.

I would say I am more interested than excited. Interested in seeing if it’s worth me upgrading or not. I’m still on my 12PM and have 0 regrets not upgrading to the 13 series last year. Best case scenario I upgrade this year, worst case scenario I replace my battery and wait for next year. So again, just waiting to see what the 14 has to offer.
Your 12 Pro Max will look virtually identical and function almost identically to the 14 Pro Max. I would hold out for another year.

I’m always excited by new product announcements. For me, that means previous products will enjoy a reduced price while still being out-of-the-box brand new. So with the iPhone14 coming up, the iPhone12mini should have another price reduction and be the perfect replacement for my iPhone7. Or not. I might just keep the 7 awhile longer.
