I just received the 10.5 iPad Pro today, and it's gorgeous. When first turning it on I said " this screen is amazing"; but I couldn't help thinking to myself - hey, if it looks great on this 10.5in screen, it's got to look even better on a 12.9 iPad Pro.

I recently sold my MBP to replace my iPad Pro 9.7 and 13" MBP combo with the new surface pro or iPad Pro. With the new iOS 11 changes, I can't help to think I'd be much happier video editing, photo editing and multitasking on the 12.9 in iPad Pro.

I think this new iPad Pro 12.9 with 512gb SSD and iOS 11 will be able to do what my gen 1 12.9 in iPad Pro wasn't able to do. I don't think the 10.5 in iPad Pro will work as my only mobile device or a laptop replacement.

I have the first 12.9" for "desktop" work at my home-office in it's nice Yohann oak wood stand, Logitech K380 keyboard and I'm good to go.
It's really nice for that, has 256Gb and 4Gb will be good enough for a few years to come, it has really a lot of real estate, split screen is useful, iOS11 will even further enhance it.
K380 is nice because it can also switch to my iphone or iPP9.7" The iphone is for communications, WhatsApp, slack, reminders. The ipads are silent; no notifications, no distractions. The iPP9.7" was for making handwritten notes in Nebo or for referencing law texts.

iPP10.5, it's such a nice device, 4Gb memory and 512Gb storage, very speedy processor, really bright screen. But most of all it has an even better keyboard and the writing is even better.
It's still not a full-full-sized keyboard. I would guess it's about 95,7% of the 12.9. But it's so little difference that my fingers hardly note the difference. Wo where the 9.7 always had me cursing about mistyping, this 10.5 keyboard does the trick rather nicely.

My current setup was having always the 12.9" and 9.7" with me. 9.7 as notepad, second screen. But the 12.9" when I needed to do lots of annotation, read badly scanned documents, but most of all shen I need to type more then a few word. I found typing on the 9.7 almost impossible. Certainly because I'm switching between the K370, ASK on the 12.9" and then the 9.7".

I now will have the 10.5 to replace my 9.7". Not for office/notepad/reference use, there the 9.7 was perfectly adequate. But when away, the 10.5" can be always with me. It's small enough to take it with me like a thin notepad or a book. It's powerful enough to battle the entry level 2016 MBP and even win at several benchmarks. It's easy to use, superb write on, but also type texts longer then a few lines.

The iPP10.5 has iOS11 db1 on it and the future looks nimble, lightweight and brilliant!

I've arranged for the return of my 10.5.. I just can't go to that size after being spoilt by the 12.9.. Got the 2017 12.9 on order now :)
Get both! :D
It's expensive, but really nice.

10.5 here. I have a Mac Pro that is still my main machine when I need to crunch out some serious typing. The 10.5 provides the portability I need around the office. I don't use 50/50 split a lot, usually the 2/3, 1/3 split so the mobile version of apps is irrelevant.

My only gripe is they removed the ability to use split onscreen keyboard and even the ability to undock it and slide it up. The larger iPad is the one that really needs this feature. It would be like offering the iPhone reachability feature on the smaller iPhone only. It makes absolutely no sense to me at all.
This is my one and only complaint about the 12.9"! I'm still choosing it over the 9.7", I'll get used to it.

Couldn't vote because I wanted to say I love my new 12.9. I'm not sure I would want anything else. It feels like when I first went 5.5" with iPhone. At first it seems bigger, but than everything feels great and all other devices feel small.

I picked up my 9.7 today after using my new 12.9 and it was the same feeling as picking up a mini when I was used to the 9.7. LOL

That was my feeling when I graduated from the 4.7 iPhone to the Plus model. Now when holding the 4.7 iPhone, it feels like the iPhone SE.

I wanted a 12.9 but went to the shop to consider both and was expecting to end up getting a 10.5. But then in the shop seeing them side by side I decided to choose the 12.9 for that extra screen real estate for so many different things. Both sizes are great but as others have mentioned, I really think once iOS 11 arrives the 12.9 will become a lot more popular.

Well the body and weight of the 10.5 is not very different than the 9.7 so I guess that one is also a Mini compared to the 12.9. :)

Agreed I think it's going to be perfect for multitasking

Yes! Because I just randomly buy stuff without any real forethought. Then I send it back...beause despite all the waste involved...Apple can afford it and I've garnered some consumer excitement.

The iPad 10.5 is definitely great, but once you've got the first iPad Pro 12.9, you will miss it after a few weeks. I tested the iPad 10.5 for three weeks and if you are not going to take a lot of notes or watching a lot of movies, the 10.5 is definitely the better choice. For taking notes, multitasking and watching movies the 12.9 2nd gen with the Apple Pencil in my opinion is the best tablet on the market.

I've been playing around with the 12.9" form factor on and off. I still prefer my 10.5". I'm willing to give up the split screen advantage that the 12.9" most definitely has in the name of more portability.

The 10.5 is way too small. 12.9 is almost too small. About 13" is like with laptops too small, but I might try the 2nd gen. Never ever ever would I buy 10.5" when you can get a still small 12.9".

I’m enjoying my 12.9 but too small for what specifically ?

Though I sound skeptical I acknowledge I think there would be a market for like a 15” iPad too

For me webpages and consumption really shines on 15" and above, and also - for me - it is the absolute minimum for wanting to work or use multitask in a side by side way. On a normal iPad 9.7, you have to zoom and pan a lot around, and the 12.9" offer this to an extend horrible experience in side by side mode.

I would buy a 15" iPad with smaller bezels, but for now I might go with 12.9". I just don't see it as very big. Especially if you have to do just the slightest work.

That’s fair but 12.9 is way closer to ones face usually than a laptops viewing distance

Definitely sounds like 12.9 will be king for you

I think a 24 inch iPad would be best. It would be like two 12.9's in side by side. Plus it would be hands free with the optional adjustable neck brace. Clearance lights in the corners would help keep people from bumping into it while walking around.

Nope. The only way you can get real work done is if you have a 48" model, which would be like two 24" iPads side by side. Anything smaller than that, and you might as well just work on your iPhone. I will never do an Excel spreadsheet on anything smaller than 48", and only when they add mouse support and a command line interface to iOS.

You have a point there spiderman. I never thought of the full benefits to having two 24 inch workspaces side by side. That is much better than just one. The optional neck and body brace would work just fine with it. Plus the ability to support 2 Apple Pencils at once for those of us that are ambidextrous (or with 8 legs) is a bonus and would increase efficiency.

I've heard rumors that the optional neck and body brace will not ship at launch and will be delayed a few months down the road. I think this is really going to put a damper on sales of the 48" model--I'll definitely wait to order until those accessories are available. I think everyone will agree that it's not really a "Pro" iPad if it doesn't have all the peripherals.

I have a 1st gen 12.9 and just got a 10.5. I have to say, as much as I love the 12.9, it really lacks portability. For me, the trade off in screen size is well worth the added portability of the 10.5. I never really used 50/50 split screen, almost always using 75/25, so the iPhone vs iPad interfaces isn’t as big of a deal. The 12.9 gets rather unruly when you add a Smart Keyboard.
