white7561, does mac os have any tool for such battery calibration, to do it every month?

----

As I said elsewhere, I wait to get my new mbp 16' in late January.

But, meanwhile, from yesterday, my current mbp 15' late 2013, for the first time in its history,
has the magsafe always in orange light!
The green is gone. Forever?
The battery percentage is always 100%.
I always had this mbp connected to power, and always in 100%. A few trips out of home, does not make a difference.
And all this, for 8 years.

So, what does this permanent orange light in my old mbp means?
Can I take a look at something?
'Coconut' app and 'battery health' app, I checked them quickly, seem to display that everything is right.
What is happening, what do you believe?

I'm just using the base M1 Pro with 16gigs of ram. Just upped my storage to 1TB . AlDente I just set it to 50%. I don't enable the sailing mode etc. Since i don't really need it . :D
Appreciate that, what about the Battery settings, are you prevent the Mac from sleeping? I seem to remember you wrote that you were.

Curious and interested as to why yours does not crash but mien does.

Nope. I just used the Apple's System Preferences option to keep the system awake when the laptop is plugged in

Ahhh, so you have enabled prevent the mac from sleeping while powered on.

I would appreciate some further clarification, do you a) let your display sleep but not the laptop or b) do you let neither teh display nor the laptop sleep.

The "Prevent your mac from sleeping when the display is off" is not preventing AlDente from crashing so I may try preventing both from sleeping!

Thanks!

So when I don't use my Mac I usually unplug it and just close the lid. So far it never crashed the app..

Tho at night since i plug it in I just turn the screen off but not sleep it . Since i want it to be able to update and sync things in the background. And since the system preferences option doesn't sleep the laptop when it's connected to power. It doesn't sleep

Apologies for possibly being obtuse BUT by how does one turn the screen off as the only thing I was able to figure out was to sleep the screen?

By turn the screen off do you mean put the screen to sleep? And, if yes, do you do this manually through the use of the Hot Corners or some other means?

Thx!

Yes I use hot corners on System Preferences to turn the display to off without it sleeping. Since I've set it not to sleep when on power. As long as I just turn the screen off it doesn't sleep the laptop. It's nice since i don't need it sleeping when it's on ac power. Since well why should it?

It's better for me being able to sync all my stuff without any issues in the background while it's connected to the AC power compared to sleeping which still powers the device on.. if it's on battery I get it . It's so we can save battery but on ac power?

Last I've checked using recorded istat menus graph. The laptop only uses 1.5W of power when it was idling (got some stuff running in the background at pretty much idle. So discord teams etc. With wifi connected) without the screen on and without it sleeping. It's so little that I'd rather have it not sleeping than sleeping when I don't care about wasted power :p

Apologies but I want to be very clear here as I am confused:

1. I went to the Hot Corners and I do NOT see Hot Corner option to turn the display off (your words), what I do see is a Hot Corner Option to "Put Display to Sleep", which you write you are not doing.

2. I therefore want to make sure I understand what you are doing so I can replicate it (because it works with AlDente):

a) You are using the Hot Corners to put the Display to Sleep (this is what you are calling turning the screen off).

b) Your Battery / Power Adapter Setting for "Turn the display off after" is set to NEVER which prevent the MacBook from sleeping. Presumably you have also enabled "Prevent your Mac from sleeping when the display is off" .

If the above is not what you are doing then please share as I would very much like to replicate what you re doing.

Thank you.

PS. I complete agree and understand your rationale to sync all your items without issue in the background,

What OS are you running? On the older machines the orange light used to mean it was charging. But maybe if you're running more current OS it works differently.

On the new machines, the orange light comes on when the optimized charging is working, and stays on the whole time.

1. Yes it seems like the option is Put Display to Sleep. Sorry I didn't remember what the exact text was that's why I'm just assuming it's on the same area as turning off the screen in hot corners.
2.a. i only use hot corners if I want to consciously turn the display off and therefore locking the laptop too. Without it sleeping when on power
2.b. my AC Power tab has the turn the display off after 1 hour. This setting doesn't really matter. I just set it to 1 hour so if I left it for 1 hour it'll turn the display off and lock it but not sleep it. And yes I have enabled the option to prevent sleep when the display is off. That is the magic feature..

I am running Big Sur.

Also the UPS screen, does not indicate any load or usage at all.
So it is like a fake charging?

Appreciate the response.

One other thing, can you please let me know whether you do or do not have the settings my “Put hard drive to sleep when possible” enabled.

Thanks.

I don't enable it because I need it when I'm doing a full HDD smart test via DriveDx App . If I enable the option. MacOS will try to sleep the drive because of inactivity

Hmmm, I wonder, do you think that the fact that I have that setting enabled is what is causing my problems?

Great thread, at least for me. Because of this thread, I just purchased Aldente.

Reading this thread and finding a step by step install page helped a great deal.

So far, so good. I was at 98% and discharging now. Let’s see if it stops at 75%.

I hope the OP gets his problem solved.

@dagored , congratulations and good luck. I hope your experience will be more along the lines of @white7561 than mine.

I thank you for the positive wishes as well!

No. shouldn't interact I think.

@white7561 ,I just got off a long call with Apple. The issue is being referred to Engineering with a response expected in 3 to 4 days. Three interesting things came out of teh call:

1. Others are having similar sleep related issues:

2. There is confusion about the interaction between the computer sleeping and the "Put hard disk to sleep when possible". They may be in conflict.

3. There is the possibility that the problem is related to Parallels which would be awful because I need the power of Excel for Windows; specifically Excel for Mac's lack of Power Query is a deal breaker for me.

Interesting. We'll see I guess if there is a bug with sleep and the put hard disks to sleep option :p

@ All, if the problem is in fact Parallel's related what is the lesser of two evils:

1. Controlling the charge by leaving the screen on all night (all be it with a screen saver and with the brightness turned to the lowest possible setting) and reducing the brightness (F1 key) so that the screen appears black / dark; or

2. Not controlling the charge by letting the display sleep, my computer sleep (which is teh current state) and having my batter fully charge at night.

I am thinking 1. is the better choice because the screen is entirely black (i.e. as though it were sleeping)!

Yes we will!

I called Apple because I do nut understand -- probably because I am not an engineer -- how a hard disk can sleep without the computer sleeping, seems impossible to me so I thought I would ask.
