Are you experiencing throttling after updating to iOS 14.5.1?

  • Yes, I am!

  • Nope, performance is the same.

Interesting. My phone already updated by itself so I guess I am out of luck oh well.

So I think I found the fix!

The temp fix of the iTunes connection method didn't work for me, my 11P was still sluggish after connecting.

I originally downloaded this update OTA. Tonight, I downloaded the ipsw update for my 11P and installed it through iTunes by holding shift, clicking update and selecting the downloaded file.
After the install I ran a GB benchmark and the scores were normal. I was scared to reboot but pulled the trigger and the scores are indeed normal and my phone is back up to speed.
No resetting or installing a beta necessary!

Is it long enough to know if the clean install solved the battery performance as well? Interestingly, I clean installed 14.5 on an old iPad, then OTA to 14.5.1. So far so good on battery and performance. It has been more than a few days I did all of this too.

My performance is actually better it seems.
iPhone SE 2nd gen.

So I apparently don’t have geekbench installed but I did use Antutu awhile back.

This is iOS 14.3, I think sometime around January.

This is today, on 14.5.1

Everytime I see these threads I always laugh and roll my eyes. I’m not saying peoples phones aren’t “throttling” but I highly doubt it is the updates fault. Throttling can come from a few reasons, and there are too many variables to know exactly why. Benchmarks are mostly inaccurate for exactly the same reasons. Too many variables.

I noticed my phone has been really bogged down since the update. I saw this thread and ran GB5 right away and sure enough, my scores were way low. I did a hard reset and it still wasn’t right. I did it again and left it alone for 15 min or so - then I re-ran GB5 and performance is back. I can really tell - apps run faster and open much more smoothly.

Jumped from ~880 single core to 1500 and ~2500 multi to 4000 on a 12 PM after I upgraded from 14.5.1 to 14.6b2. Something is definitely funky with 14.5.1 and I immediately could tell after upgrading from 14.5.
Can confirm, same thing happened on 11 Pro Max.
Downloaded 14.6b2 and the issue appears to be solved both in perceived performance and snappiness, as well as in benchmarks.

Mine was throttle as well on both 14.5.1 and 14.6 beta 2
How do u guys updated to beta 2 of 14.6 with a better result ? I was doing it by OTA and the result persist the same as 14.5.1

I did a factory reset and after multiple tests I can tell performance is now normal, but I was getting less than half performance before the reset...
Perhaps some conflicting files from previous versions of iOS 14...

I don't mind doing a factory reset from time to time, as I like to keep my phone clean, but you shouldn't need to perform thess operations to get normal performance.

Metal score is low as well. I’ll try a hard reset later.

score: 5649

I don't benchmark etc. My phone returned to normal operating speed with no lag about an hour or two after installing the update.

I had basically this problem with iOS 14.4.X on my iPhone 11 where it would act slow and drain the battery faster than normal (i.e. in less than a day instead of the typical 2-3 days I normally go without charging). It turned out that iCloud was continuously syncing the files in iCloud Drive. It would sync a few hundred MB per hour from my phone even if no file had been updated. I only realized what was happening when I ran out of mobile data two months in a row, which otherwise never happens. When I checked my cellular data use in Settings I saw that 22.3GB of data had been used on "Documents & Sync", and this was while working from home with continuous wifi connectivity for most of the day. I solved the problem by logging out from iCloud, restarting the phone, and then logging back in. Perhaps this is what's affecting others?

My XR is roughly the same (single core was 3pts higher, multi was 2pts lower), my finacée's 11PM is also pretty much the same.

I am experiencing a weird connectivity issue with my watch (Gen3 WiFi) now, tho.

Based on my experience with different iPhones and iOS versions, this really sounds like this update messed up power management on some devices. I have seen symptoms like this before. Probably a software error in data between the chip on the battery and motherboard. Plugging in fixed the issue.

Also can confirm that my backup iPhone 6s has the same throttling issue but my daily x has not. 6s has a brand new battery and no issues before.
