Hmmm despite being plugged in all day to a power source, my battery has been draining! Reported it, and hadn't seen this before.
its not a bug, its a feature.... battery health management introduced with 10.15.5...

I think this is normal.

Lithium battery should NOT be kept at 100% charge. This has adverse effect to the life span. About 80% is optimum.

Fully discharge is deadly for Lithium battery. Stay fully charged isn't good as well.

Lots of good designed electronic device will make small discharge -> charge cycle if the device itself is plugged in 24/7. This help the battery to stay healthy.

Even my 20 years old Thinkpad can do this. I will be very surprised if the Macbook doesn't have this function.

I knew about the 'Not Charging', but I thought it would keep it at 100% or thereabouts (like down to 95%). Not let it go down to 80%. If I wanted to head out for the day, and it's only 80%, that's a bit of a gamble!

Is the 2020 iMac supported in Mac OS Big Sur Public Beta 2?
No, I don't believe it is. Somebody posted a link in one of these threads to the official Apple Developers release notes, and I'm pretty sure it's still listed as not working on the newest iMac.

It's frustrating for a number of reasons:
1) With the USB-C charger, you can have an issue of disconnected cable at the charger end, at the computer end. And since there's no indicator light, you have to open the machine to confirm.
2) The USB-C chargers have a tendency to be quite weak and charge much slower than the old magsafe chargers at baseline
3) As you said if you wanna go off grid, it can be a relative gamble..

At least the wattage of these machines went down so much, portable batteries are much more feasible. My 2020 MBA is also the first Mac I've been able to charge from my car battery without issues.

Any news on the "power saver" vs "performance" modes in Big Sur?

Public Beta 2 loaded. Seems slower to me. Had an issue using Teams where the app was crushing the processor and the Menu Bar started flashing. Otherwise, it seems ok. Still waiting for CCC to workout the cloning issue with Apple (System vol changes).

I actually ran into this today for the first time ever. Last night I plugged in my MBP to charge. I guess I didn’t think to make sure the charging chime sounded. Today when I booted it I discovered it had not charged. Either the weight of the charging block made it come loose from the surge protector, or the surge protector had cut power to it. Upon unplugging and re-plugging the power adapter it began charging.

Yep. It's a major major step back on the hardware end which is exacerbated by the software.

BTW, what are the battery life experiences with BigSur?

I personally have not noticed a change, but I haven’t paid much attention to it. However, my friend indicated he’s seeing decreased battery life.

I installed Big Sur Beta last night before turning in. Woke up this morning to my laptop in a boot loop. The fans would blow at 100 percent for one quick puff and then black screen and a reboot. Rinse and repeat. This happened probably the whole night.

Spent the whole day getting my Time Machine backup from yesterday at 1pm to take. Eventually (3 times) it worked and I was back up and running on Catalina.

This is my first time in 20 years of Macs upgrading the OS, including Betas, where it completely bricked my machine. I noticed that there were several posts here with the same symptoms. Without Time Machine I would have been out of luck.

It will be a long time once Big Sur is released that I upgrade to it.

I tested Big Sur public beta 1 on my iMac 27 inch, late 2015. Everything worked fine except for some bugs. When I logged in in safe mode, the image on the screen became very strange, see image. I have reported this to Apple.

I downgraded back to Catalina.

I see now that public beta 2 has been released, can anyone with the same iMac as mine, see if you get the same graphic issue on your screen when logging into safe mode? Maybe it's just my machine?

I am on Public Beta 2 (same machine)
Model Name: iMac

Model Identifier: iMac17,1

Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Core i7

Processor Speed: 4 GHz

Number of Processors: 1

Total Number of Cores: 4

L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB

L3 Cache: 8 MB

Hyper-Threading Technology: Enabled

Memory: 32 GB

Boot ROM Version: 170.0.0.0.0

SMC Version (system): 2.34f3

I don't have the screen issues, just slow performance in Safe Mode.

Yes. That's why the first sentence in my post is "I installed Big Sur Beta last night". I've been on the Beta program for years. This is the first time this has ever happened in 20 years and it was catastrophic FOR ME, hence my post.

Yes, but you know the risk you are taking. You had luck so many years that you didn't experience something similar..

You're preaching to the choir, brother. Learned my lesson after 20 years and that's why I stated this was the last time on a Beta for me.

Same for me. If I leave it on the login screen it doesn’t do it, if I login to safe mode it doesn’t do it. The fact safemode is stable makes me think it’s a piece of software that’s loading that doesn’t like this beta but I’ve tried disabling everything I can from safe mode (and even uninstalled some things but had no luck so far. I would rather find a fix as my restore refuses to work, I Get as far as selecting the destination disk, enter my password and nothing. I can keep clicking the button to continue and it just stays on the select destination page. So if I can’t fix it I’m going to have to risk wiping the drive, reinstalling the OS and hope my backup works then.

By any chance do you have adobe creative cloud installed. That’s the main thing I haven’t deactivated yet

I have Adobe Lightroom but not the full cloud suite. I wonder if that’s it... some people have reported that Parallels 16 caused it, but I deleted it and I still get it. So frustrating...

its certainly not Parallels in my case as I don’t have it installed. Will try uninstalling all of Adobe later

Keep us posted.
It seems to be rooted with “endpointsecurityd”

Some have found success with deleting Norton or other anti virus software, but I don’t have any installed.

Interesting. I do have Norton AntiVirus and NordVPN on my machine that had all the trouble.

What day in September might we expect macOS 11 to get released based on previous releases? Looking forward to macOS.

I feel so fortunate that I've almost always had a second Mac to install betas, new OS (shipping versions), and new software on to test before installing on my main Mac.

I've also been fortunate that OS betas have always worked out for me quite well for the most part (including Catalina and Big Sur). I don't discount other people's problems with betas, however, I also know that so many of the problems are self-inflicted.

Starting with a full erase and install, then installing my apps one at a time and testing is my preferred method for beta OS versions. That way when/if a problem occurs, I can safely assume that the last app I installed is the problem (and not the OS itself) since the entire thing runs just fine before installing it.

By the time Apple ships the final version, I almost always feel confident that I can (or shouldn't) install the OS on my main Mac. I only recall one time when I didn't install a new OS version until after the first .X release (though I can't remember for sure what version it was - I think it was Lion).
