Correct and that's really the point; one persons underspecced is another persons perfectly specced.

Serious conversation about apples shortcomings? Okay your opinion. We each spend our money differently and have different needs.

Oh, let's look at which argument you're using. Let's see...

And the problem is we run inevitably into apologists who always say some form of or combination of 1) apple doesn't need to because of sales or 2) apple doesn't need to because I don't mind that type of hardware and/or I don't happen to need that specific software feature(s).

Ah, lucky number 2! The good ol' classic choice of "it works for me, who cares how you want it."

In fact, it all works so wonderfully for you that you think it's actually pointless to even discuss it. Not even in a forum meant to discuss precisely these types topics. Nope, because it'll lead us into some sort of philosophical empty and endless wishlist, or whatever you were babbling about earlier. : rolls eyes :

But! Let's not forget the importance of individualism and personal usage and needs. I sure want to espouse that notion, but don't really want to discuss what your needs are, and in fact, will argue against them and detract the conversation, because it works perfectly fine for me!

Heck, you say it right here in your latest posts, "... we have different needs." Yes! Yes, we do, indeed.

But you think it's all futile. So why are you here at these forums (and specifically this subforum) if you really think this is all pointless and unnecessary? Are you here only to troll? Or are you exactly the type of abhorrent "Apple fan" that I'm describing? You're either one or the other, because you're surely not here helping the discussion on how and where Apple can improve on the hardware and software front. You're doing very much, in fact, to detract from that conversation.

To troll like you accused me of? And frankly if you think I'm an abhorrent fan, it's my right to be. You seem to be a fanatical android liking person and its your right.

----------

Actually no. The S6 is a drastic upgrade in design and software.

No need for the "rolls eyes". This is not a pissing contest.

Then why is iPhone the top seller when other phones upgrades offer a bigger contrast of upgrade? It's cause of Apple's brand and marketing, and the fact that the average consumer is clueless about what the competition truly offers. But that's changing at whatever pace.

Samsung listened to it's consumers and critics. Let's not act like the whole "plastic vs premium feeling metal" wasn't the biggest topic when discussing Galaxy phones.

Yes, every 2 cycles or so Apple throws out an awesome feature while basically keeping everything else the same. I never said Apple was incompetent of advancing the iPhone/iOS. They are just too slow for my taste compared to the competition.

I like the roll eyes.:)

Voicing your opinion? Feel free to do so. No one's telling you to not post. But when you have nothing but contradicting or false or fallacious arguments, expect to be called out on them.

"I care about individualism and people have personal usage needs" but hey, who cares to talk about what hardware/software features you want. Apple sales are through the roof and all their decisions work just fine for me, so what's the problem? Or how 'bout your stubbornness to finally admit that more email attachment features would be better than less, just because email attachments currently work just fine for you. Or how 'bout your philosophical BS-ing about how this is all going to lead us into some infinite loop of wanting more features. What rubbish was that?

"Samsung said waterproofing is critical, but now they're saying it's not" but oops, I can't supply proof of this, so I'm essentially implying there was zero backlash or response to them losing those features. Again, please show me a review of the S6/Edge that doesn't make not of those losses. I ask again, care to retract your fallacious, unfounded, and inciteful statement?

But of course, in the end, what's your response when you're called out for all these things?

As for the remainder of the post: tl;dr.

Ya.

Well you are in the Alternatives to iOS and iOS Devices section.

This is where you are finding people that like other devices and like some better than Apples. Maybe you should stay in the exclusive Apple section and be with the others that agree with you. Unless you actually like to debate your Apple love. Which is ok by me. Im just saying. You wont get accused of things you feel arent deserved.

Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!
I read that some analysts are predicting that the next iPhone may actually end up with a worst camera! All due to the obsession with thinness Apple has.

It is said that they will bump up the resolution, but because of how thin the device is they won't be able to maintain the current size of pixels etc so less light will enter the camera, and that means lower quality photos in low light.

It's an interesting theory, we will have to wait and see what happens, I have also read a fair few LG G4 reviews and they say how wonderful it's camera is, much better than the iPhone and it has full manual mode.
I would suggest Apple could add manual features to it's camera app, but that's not Apple's way as that means you can choose what you want to do as opposed to Apple telling you what to do.

I dont know. There comes a point to me where these things are getting too thin. My GS6 is pretty thin and i like it better with my Spigen Slim Armor case on it. Its still pretty thin even with the type of case on it while giving good protection.

And i do. I never argue benchmarks or piddly stuff like that. Those mean nothing to me. I only say what i like better about Android when others come here and ask what Android can do that iOS cant.

Apple makes solid devices. I just dont prefer the iPhone as my phone device as it is the device i use the most. They make great computers and one day i will get a iMac and/or perhaps a laptop if they ever allow them to have touchscreens. I do not have a Tablet.

That's a piss poor standard that is completely bereft of logic.

So grandma with a rotary phone has an experience equal to an iphone because it works for her? Her phone is not inferior?

This is bad comedy.

Better yet the very nature of this thread is about the nature of iphone physical hardware compared to competitors.

You've made it clear that you have no interest whatsoever in engaging in this level of discussion. So what is your purpose in this thread?

If your answer is "works for me" then you've lost the plot completely or just committed to trying to troll and steer this thread off topic.

Oh! So you're sick of being called out for being a troll and/or an abhorrent apple fan? Sick of people calling you out for your false and accusatory arguments?

Well, imagine how sick we are of hearing the stuff that you and others like you keep espousing. People who voluntarily come to the alternatives section and visit threads like these only to derail the conversation. And then when called out for it, conveniently ignore the points.

"Too long, didn't read." What a lovely and convenient way to communicate in a forum.

I use my s6 naked, and I gotta say, the thinness makes it very slippery and sometimes hard to use one handed. This is true, maybe even more true, of the iPhone 6 too.

The thinness obsession, I think, needs to stop at some point. Either that or the battery technology has to get better faster.

I'm curious to see if apple will apply the step battery technique they used in the latest machine air to their iPhone and tablets. I hope it's possible.

+10 for this.

Apple has every power and resources to put the best technology into their phones and add the most basic of software feature to ios. They choose not to because they don't have to, because the branding is able to carry their dictated pace. They'll innovate one or two key features and go to market with those, but will not deliver as whole of a package as they can.

And for that, the users suffer in various ways, whether they know it themselves or not.

And it's a real shame people like i7guy doesn't understand this line of thought; that because sales are good doesn't mean one should not compete at their highest level. It is folly to think this way. No, apple is not doomed. Far from it. And that's sort of the problem.

I agree and the reason i do not prefer aluminum backs and really was apprehensive about getting a glass back. The only way it would work for me was to get a good case for grip and protect the glass back though it seems to be much more durable glass than the iphone 4 had.

Im using this one. It doesnt make it real thick at all.Very slim for a double protection case.

Totally agree, the G4 also has a removable back!!!! So you can still replace the battery and upgrade the memory.
Did anyone complain about how thick the S5 was? The Note 4 is? It's crazy that the option for removable backs and decent battery life is being evolved in favour of super thin designs..

People are not going to care about thin design if the device is nothing but a paperweight because it doesn't turn on! I have issues with Apple's obsession with thinness, iPad fair enough as it still has space for a big battery, iPhone no.
Reducing ports on a computer to 1 for thinness, no.

Actually, it is all 40 million iPhone 6 users. Everyone upgraded from a previous iPhone or another brand phone to the iPhone 6 or 6+. Reason being is Apple is a master at promoting incremental upgrades like it's a whole other device or OS. They are good at advertising the simple things and make it come across as a major evolution.

Apple makes the average user feel like they have a phone that's top of the tech chain, when most of us tech heads know that's not true. If most of the average consumers knew that, and had true knowledge about competitors, iPhone sales would probably be at least 30% less than what it is today.

Yes, the average iPhone user probably just calls, texts, email, and listen to music the majority of the time. And that's pretty much how Apple wants the majority of it's consumers habits to stay. Cause once the majority of consumers demand the openness that Android has, Apple will be in trouble.

I'm not bashing the iPhone, it's a damn good smartphone. I'm just calling it like I see it. The average consumer can't demand what they are clueless about. But how long will that last?

See, this argument falls apart when based on the assumption that Android users are automatically more knowledgable about their smartphones.

This isn't specific to just Apple users. I'd wager that the vast majority of all smartphone users probably just call, text, email, and listen to music the majority of the time. A far greater number of my regular contacts use iPhones and sure, they don't do much more than these basic functions. But it's not because they are settling for the 'limited functionality' the iPhone offers--it's all they need to do.

Most iPhone users don't even realize the more advanced functionality of the iPhone even exists. And the same goes for just about any person I interact with using an Android handset. They aren't installing all kinds of custom functionality, they aren't even aware of the expanded functions available--don't have a clue their Samsung even has multi-window or Smart Stay, have no idea what bluetooth trusted devices or that they can add custom widgets beyond what's preloaded on the device. They use their phones EXACTLY the same way that most iPhone users use their phone. They only use the automatic mode on their camera, they use it to check and share photos/content on Facebook or Instagram, text message their contacts, check and email, watch a YouTube video, or play a simple game.

And there in lies the huge advantage Apple has. When comparing these basic core functionalities across devices, the iPhone and the Apple ecosystem, the one stop shopping environment, so to speak, is very attractive. In fact, I'd argue that it does some of these core functions better (iMessage is a far better messaging solution, Safari is a very good mobile browser, the iTunes store offers an easy, comprehensive media store).

The point is, if most people only use their phones like this, it's a level playing field. And like Apple or not, they make some really attractive hardware that people like and is pretty easy to use.

----------

And please don't interpret my previous post as an apology for Apple's approach to smartphones--it's not. I'd love to see more functionality in their software and a few improvements in hardware (RAM and camera MP) but the discussion is pertaining to Apple needing to close the gap. In most people's eyes, there is no gap to close. And they're not ignorant to what they're missing...they just don't have the needs or desires we have in our tech and the iPhone is more than enough for their needs.

Again, same as above. For example: Do you think most iPhone users know they can use the Amazon app store, or any app store on Android? I could write a full page about what you're able to do on android vs iOS. Not to say that's what everyone wants, but there are at least a couple of random things you can't do on iOS that you can do on Android that will interest users, if they only knew about it.

Most iPhone users don't even realize the more advanced functionality of the iPhone even exists. And the same goes for just about any person I interact with using an Android handset. That I agree with. But manufactures of Android phones do highlight their unique features. Apple seems to ingrain features to the point every user will at least give it a try once.

iMessage and Facetime are the iPhone's greatest features, but those level of new features are not common with every cycle. As most cycles of iOS remain the same with just some added features that most will not use or thought they were already overdue.

And there in lies the huge advantage Apple has. When comparing these basic core functionalities across devices, the iPhone and the Apple ecosystem, the one stop shopping environment, so to speak, is very attractive. Agreed. But with hardware and software tech moving so fast, how long can Apple keep the majority of it's users not going astray, while moving at such a slower pace?

Keeping this on topic, Apple doesn't have the premium design to fall back on anymore. The S6/S6 Edge took that away, along with HTC One, and arguably the LG G4 and some others.

The S6/S6 Edge and LG G4 have even surpassed the iPhone when it comes to auto point n shoot camera use.

Iphone is losing it's competitive edge. Apple must bring something strong to the table to keep the iPhone as the undeniable #1 smartphone to the mainstream public. As good of an ecosystem Apple has. The ecosystem argument is not as strong as Apple would like it to be. That argument just works for now.

And please don't interpret my previous post as an apology for Apple's approach to smartphones--it's not. IMO, there definitely is a gap to close. It may not be noticeable to the mainstream user now. But if or when that gap becomes too large, the mainstream public will notice.

Samsung is trying to do what Apple did in 2007. And that's to make a certain model the "go to smartphone" for the masses. IMO, the direction Samsung is going, sooner or later, they will reveal a model that does just that if Apple keep moving at their bubble like pace.

What Apple is good at is copying. These arent their ideas. They arent the first to use icons on a phone and arent the first to make MP3 players....as you said. Yes Samsung copies as well and im not pro Samsung. I buy what i like and havent exclusively used Samsungs phones but Apple has copied for years and you are calling it innovation.

Copying is one thing but making it better is another. There is a difference.

True, but nobody will complain if they get a faster device at the same price.

I won't complain if Macdonalds gave me an extra ten fries to go with my meal, but I won't really thank the cashier either. By that time, I will probably be so full that the extra fries won't have much value. I may not even end up eating them.

People get an Apple device because they trust that whatever specs Apple puts in their device will suffice in providing a great user experience. This very often means the fastest professors and best cameras Apple can produce. Sure, a device can always be cheaper and better specced, but where do you draw the line?

Conversely, look at Android handsets. Top notch specs, but you still run into issues like poor camera quality.

Sure, Apple could, but I just don't see the benefit beyond a certain point.

Again I don't understand this. What evidence is there that Apple is suffering right now?

I see a lot of personal feelings. What evidence is there that Apple is all a sudden losing their edge?

Consider it a forecast based on past and present. I never claimed any definitive rise or fall of Apple, any manufacturer, or any smartphone model.

I see a lot of personal feelings.

I think that's on your part. Why do you come to this section if you can't bear hearing any constructive criticism against Apple? ;)

It's my opinion, which might prove factual or not.

Constructive criticism is always welcome. So you're now predicting Apple will lose their edge based on past and present. So what makes u think that if you go by any data?

The iPhone has already lost some of it's edge ..............

Premium design is no longer the automatic go to factor.

iPhone is not the elite phone anymore when it comes to battery life.

iPhone doesn't have the absolute best point n shoot camera usage anymore.

Finger print sensor is matched.

I can go on and on based on differ Android models and Android OS itself.

This is nothing negative about the iPhone. But let's be real, the iPhone has held on to it's #1 title because of a good part of what I mentioned above. Seems every cycle you can add something else to the list that the iPhone isn't the absolute greatest at anymore. I wouldn't be surprised if Android or Samsung implements a backup that matches or surpasses iOS backups around late this year or next year. They are certainly inching closer

The iPhone has lost its edge according to what metric? That's a broad statement and I'm sure there is some good rational behind that statement.

You are entitled to your opinion.

Mine is that I don't remain on the phone to ask a business to take my money. There are usually options. I just move on to the next one.

This is a forum of opinions. And yes negotiating for a car is exactly what you describe. Asking a business to take your money.

Forever.

You are not the first person to make this claim. Countless people before you have repeatedly claimed that Apple is doomed because their iPhones don't offer this feature or that. But guess what - Apple went on to prosper while their competitors, who actually offered these features (and more) only had declining profits to show for their efforts. I think that just goes to show what little the "initiated" like you and me know about doing business the Apple way.

I am of the opinion that Apple cannot be disrupted in its current shape and form. Apple doesn't sell you an iPhone; it sells you the user experience, and since they are pretty much the only company who owns the entire stack of both hardware and software, only Apple can offer that unique user experience that comes with their hardware and software working in harmony. File managers and the ability to root your device may not matter as much as smooth scrolling in Safari and great aftercare service.

Apple's consumer base would be those who appreciate a great user experience and are willing to pay a premium for it. They are happy and satisfied so why mess with that?

The only possibility is if a new product category appears which completely one-ups the smartphone, and from what I can see, nobody is doing that.

I would argue that by now, Apple's and Android's user bases are more or less self-selecting. People have had ample opportunities to play around with devices from both camps and should know by now which suits their needs better. The people who want the openness of Android, by definition, should have already migrated to Android. If they love what Apple does not offer, then why the heck are they still with Apple?

So if a current Apple user wants to leave because Android does something better (for him), then I say, by all means - go!
