What do you guys think about this phone? It's not my video nor phone but mine reacts very much the same as this guys. I find that I can see a slight change in color when looking basically head on at the absolute top and bottom of the screen. Not blue but rather more white than the middle of the screen just from the added amount of angle coming from looking at the top and bottom. Do all the "good" units experience this as well?

Yep, yellow->pink/red->blue. Same as on every other OLED phone I've seen. Only the intensity and head-on temperature varied.

I think that when the phone is uniform head-on (which is actually quite hard to to on such a tall phone since there's always pixels on an angle) its fine. You won't notice it in games, video's and colourful pictures anyway.

Displaymate just reviewed the Galaxy S9's screen, which is now the best screen in a smartphone ever, with special notice to good viewing angles on white backgrounds (up to 2x less shift than the iPhone X)

I haven't looked at the display mate article yet on S9, or skimmed

Do they say specifically 2x less shift than iPhoneX?

^^ some OLED's are more prone to shift than others, and pink edges than others.

my unit is really solid on both fronts. OLED lottery is hell

No, not specifically, but if you comp[are their numbers manually you can get to that conclusion easily.

I agree with you about variety. Our local reseller has a unit with a pink border, and the big warehouse only has perfect demo models (as in very little noticeable shift). If I'm at an Apple store I'm going to let them check my unit out, but I won't go through the hassle of sending the phone in again. Did that with the iPhone 7 and had to use an 5C for 4 months because of endless exchanging. Never again.

I agree that it's OK if it is uniform head on. But on further inspection I've found out that the issue occurs significantly more on the bottom half of the screen and does so while looking straight at the screen. Posting two pictures I took earlier from head on. One webpage is supposed to be quite pink but fades to white and the other is supposed to be white and fades to more blue/grey. Also posting a photo with a bit of an angle, but still what I consider well within how I normally use my phone.

That just looks really annoying :(

On my unit the issue is exactly the same top to bottom. Only the pixels directly pointing at my eyes show "yellow" (good white) vs the reddish around it. If I put the phone too close to my face I can "move" the middle yellow/white bit up and down by slightly tilting the phone.

Worst thing about these screens is that the screen looks really good when put down on a table but becomes yellow when picking it up, however; I think the macbook pro's and iPads are probably calibrated way too blue.

Hi, guys. I don't have an Iphone X. But I can tell from my experience, the blue or red or yellow shift/tint when changing the view angle is not inherent property of (samsung) amoled display as the Apple claimed. Even there is such shift, it should not be as severe as what you guys encountered.

I owns yotaphone 2, galaxy s5, galaxy s7. Over generations, I see how Samsung AMOLED degrade in view angle aspect. From yotaphone 2(which supposed to have and amoled of galaxy s4 generations), which has no conceivable color shift and only very little brightness decrease on white color no matter how you tilt the screen. To galaxy s5, small blue shift and little brightness decrease on white color only after you tilt the screen by more than 20 degrees. To galaxy s7, conceivable blue shift and brightness decrease on white color even you tilt the screen only al little and rainbow effect(the color shift can change between yellow, blue, green and red).

It seems to me the iphone X behaves exactly like samsung galaxy S7 in color shift. But at least my S7 screen is quite uniform when you see it head on.

Some speculate the color shift issue arises after samsung tried to increase the dpi of the display. That explained the degradation in view angle from S5 to S7. For S4 to S5 degradation, someone pointed that it is because Samsung changed the polarizer on S5. For what reason, perhaps for performance or to lower cost. It seems to me that S5 has better contrast under direct sunlight then yotaphone 2. So perhaps samsung decided a little regression on view angle is acceptable in case they can improve readability under direct sunlight.

The issue is Apple and Samsung are always bragging how fantastic their product is from generation to generation without telling the whole story.

Had contact with Applecare in the Netherlands. The person helping me had the same issue on his galaxy S8+ so he instantly knew what I was talking about. I made some pictures that I mailed him and he made a case for me.
My phone is getting picked up on monday, and within a week I should have a replacement screen on my phone that should be of great quality (he made a special notice to tell them I'm picky enough to see defects).

Fingers crossed! Also fingers crossed that UPS will pick up the package before I have to leave for my night shift.

Apple just send me back my phone. I'll receive it tomorrow. They said that they "Put the phone on a white screen on full brightness for an hour but did not encounter a yellow screen". They didn't even bother to look at my pictures that I attached to the case ID and didn't bother to check out the obvious colour shift to pink (we can't see the problem they say). My god, I never had this experience before with Apple.

So I have to check the phone out again on wednesday, and if it's not better I should call back so they can offer me a "Satisfying solution". They should've just called me up while they looked into the phone, that's what was promised to me. So they removed the protector, they left it on white for an hour on full brightness, decreasing my screens lifespan, and then returned the phone.

Not happy at all.

This is one of the pictures I've send them to illustrate my issue:

From your pic, I would say the display on your iPhone is quite good. The shift of color(as you described) is quite normal in recently manufactured amoled display. You can play lottery game to find a better display, but I suppose this would take several rounds.

Really? I compared this display to multiple X's and other OLED phones like the galaxy S8 and note 8. When I tilt the device the red is larger and when tilting back the screen looks horribly yellow in comparison. Without true tone and on lower brightness (50 percent) the screen also looks like there is film over it. I would rather have a reddish screen that shifts to blue I guess.

yeah I don't think that panel looks that good, tbh either

I'll be sending it right back to Applecare when I get my hands on it. 1330 euro's for "Yeah we just see white" is not enough for me.

Good lord that’s a lotta dough

after euro to USD and getting mine on contract I got mine for almost a third of that price and the screen is great. But I went through many unlocked units. All but one of those were TERRIBLE.

For that kinda money I would expect a perfect unit and keep trying until I got
One or
Give up and return to a different iPhone

Did you compare it with other devices together under same light condition? Or you just compared them with your memory? If it was the former case, perhaps you really have a poor quality screen on your phone.

Yeah I kept the phone next to the ones I tried on exactly the same webpage. On all those phones the "yellow" was a lot more white, and though they all went pink->blue, they all had less pink. So all in al whiter balance + less pink. And that's all I'm asking for. It's just weird that Applecare can't seem to see it. If you turn the phone on and tilt it carefully a bit the yellow blob just goes up and down instantly. I'm ging to make a video tomorrow that I can send them.

For future reference, the best way to handle a problem like this is to return the phone in the first 2 weeks for a full refund and buy a new phone. In my experience the Apple genius/staff never see screen irregularities and after 2 weeks they can be very accommodating or they can just tell you that the phone is within specs and refuse to exchange. I have always had great experiences with Apple, but if I am unhappy with a device it goes back within the 2 week return for any reason period.

When I returned my first X, I tried to get them to swap for a new one in store, but they wouldn't do it. I returned it and bought another X a few weeks later to try again. That screen was a little better, but not much. It was returned as well, and I bought an 8 plus

The thing is they told me it would go away after a month of use, which it didn't. Over the phone they said I would definitely get a new screen since my pictures showed proof enough. But the technician decided "Nope, I had it on a table for an hour and it didn't turn yellow" while probably looking at it from an angle which makes it looks really white. I have tons of proof that it is a defect, since none of the OLED phones on display in the entire city (granted, small city) have this issue. None.

Worst case scenario is I have to use an Applecare+ replacement, but I really need to get rid of this screen.

If the photo is representative of what your phone looks like at viewing angle I agree that your screen should be replaced. My iPhone X isn't perfect but I'm ok with it. It has a faint pink line about 1 mm going down the right side and a pink and blue shift at an angle. I've looked at multiple phones in the Apple store and other stores that carry the X and most have some pink in the display and shift color when held at an angle. I'm not that impressed with OLED right now. I have an iPhone 8 with a near perfect white screen, but my X is still my favorite because of the bigger display.
I hope you are able to get your screen replaced without having to use an AppleCare replacement.

Blue shift is fine with me. I'm getting a Galaxy s9+ tomorrow as well so I'll compare them.
Anyway, the picture shows the screen when viewed dead-on. Yes, there is a yellow pill in the middle. The pink is harder to see in real life, but shines through when tilting very slightly. When i grab the phone it looks white alright, until I do anything that makes me tilt it, the shift to pink and back makes it look horrible.

I hope I can get it exchanged too. Thanks for the support! I do Miss IPS a bit :+

OLED has different viewing staples associated with it
Many annoyances can be overcome by adjusting the True Tone ,brightness etc
Others you just get used to. It’s a big change from LCD and has many pluses and minuses

True, OLED has some shifting. However, extreme shifting and a yellow hue are not part of those normal viewing staples. I'll update here after I called Apple back today.

So I've called Applecare again and they apologized for the service I have gotten. To compensate they are sending me a completely new phone instead of opting for a replacement. So all good there. Let's just hope there won't be pink..

Good for you for not accepting a crappy screen. I've been flamed in another thread for returning multiple X over this issue, lol. Glad Apple is working with you. The best screens, and this is very subjective, are the ones that just slightly shift to blue. I find pink shift very distracting and every X I've tried that had pink shift there also was slight pink tint on the edge(s) or top by the ears. Good luck.
