On second thought, why waste the whiskey? Bad dice rolls won't seem as bad if we are all lit up on the happy juice!

I will remind myself upon that once I'm back home!

No work tomorrow!! :D

> the lack of blood must be affecting your wits, Frostbeard.

you didn't roll a 1, you rolled a 3 (+2=5 damage) ;)

lack of blood and too much alcohol - bad mix.

Still, pretty sure I'd have rolled at least a 5 myself ;)
[doublepost=1458229442][/doublepost]Also, at least I actually managed to hit him!

Hoorray! shout-outs to ravenvii and ss!

Delighted to have been of some small assistance.

(Has there been any word of our missing Master Fletcher?)

probably he decided to use his rope to hang all his garments and gear to dry and is having a picnic in the meadow outside.
hopefully he is preparing supper for all of us (he does have the pot, after all).
I for one could use a nice rabbit stew.

i think it was specified that the move away was only if the goblin was killed. (exactly to avoid opportunity attack) (posts #1142-1143)
since he wasn't, he would not have moved away
the attack of opportunity in this case is not warranted.

@ravenvii , another question, any reason you are not rolling the damage for the goblins anymore? are you just taking the average (5 in this case)?
>>> I must've missed that part. HP restored to Veit -- the attack never happened. I never calculated the goblins' damage -- I've always used 5. My plan was to switch to calculated damage after you finish this story milestone. I wanted to keep things simple at first since there's a lot of moving parts to learn already :)

Raven: I'd like to finish the little guy off! My shortbow is ready!
>>> I edited the post -- ranged attacks now have disadvantage. Let me know if you want to change your move.

great.

i didn't realized the damage was always 5.
It does make sense for the beginning, but i think rolling adds pathos, and it makes it more interesting if you don't know exactly how much damage may come. also adds a level of tactics, because you may want to gamble on a bad roll.

Portia (@Moyank24 ), remember you have Halfling Nimbleness and Sneak Attack.
Like for Veit above, IF you kill the goblin you are fighting with, you can safely retreat behind me, since you can do it at no penalty and have more than enough movement left

You dash in between Bartholomeus and Veit and with your shortsword, you --

*** CHECK ***
AC 14, and you have +5, so:

Portia: 2
*** CHECK ***

-- try to stab the goblin just as it raised its shield, deflecting the attack. Snarling, it charges towards you with its scimitar raised. You attempt to dodge --

*** CHECK ***
You have an AC of 14, and the goblin has +4, so:

Goblin: 10

It hits you for 5 hp, you now have 4 hp.
*** CHECK ***

-- but you weren't quick enough; the goblin's scimitar pierced your side, sending you staggering backwards.

The goblin at the bend raised its shortbow once more and aimed at Portia hoping to finish her off --

*** CHECK ***
Portia has an AC of 14, and the goblin has +4. However, she is obscured by Veit and Bartholomeus in front, so the goblin has disadvantage:

Goblin: 4

Miss!
*** CHECK ***

-- but the arrow grazed Veit' armored leg and was waylaid harmlessly onto the ground behind Bartholomeus.

Status?

Nevermind
I snarl to the goblin at the bend with the bow (i assume he is close enough, if not, will change action depending on situation)
>why don't you pick on somebody twice your size instead, huh?
And i rush him with the scimitar ablaze

(Note: as he is using the bow, he is not using his shield, so his AC should be 2 less)

We take care of the wounded one.

I was wondering about that before, thought you were probably so thrilled about this game that you couldn't sleep! ;)

Good luck though! Crossing fingers. I had my 'grande finale' today at work - and look at me : still alive! :D

Tomorrow is off though!

And guess what: Shaolin Monk did get stabbed!

..but was bleeding gold. So cool.

You rush towards the goblin as he is reloading his shortbow. You prepare to thrust your scimitar --

*** CHECK ***
AC of 12, and you got +5, so:

Bartholomeus: 19

Almost! Alas, so the damage is 1d6 + 3, so:

Bartholomeus: 5

Yeah, the goblin is a goner.
*** CHECK ***

-- and run the goblin through with the blade. He did not die instantly; he fell to the ground after you withdrew your scimitar, and life bled out of him.

>>> @Scepticalscribe you're on! Since Bartholomeus moved forwards, you can now attack the remaining goblin directly. Remember that he only has 2 hp.

And with this one we are at 9 down!
Lads, I trust we can make it a nice round 10 momentarily?
we need to go and look for Master Fletcher

great! such a killing-machine..can you sleep at night though? :D

And yes, after we're done here we should hide the bodies and take care about master Fletcher.

right now it is good i cannot sleep at night! :D
but i foresee a weekend-long crash tomorrow night.

here we still have that pesky one biting at yours and Portia's ankles. such a nuisance.
hopefully he can be quickly dispatched.
with just 2 HP, any hit with any of your (or sylvan or portia's) weapons means a kill, so we should be ok.

Do you suggest that I use a weapon (for example, my short sword), or a handy cantrip in order to expedite his dispatch to whatever strange form of afterlife goblins are said to inhabit?

it's almost the same. but,

the goblin has only 2 residual HP. range is not a concern.
if you hit, you cantrips deal a damage of 1d8, while you sword deals a damage of 1d6+2.
therefore... :)

While I can read election stats effortlessly, I find my eyes glazing when reading these stats. Candidly, I still don't understand quite how they work and what this terminology means. (meaning, I don't 'get' 1d6, or 1d8; what is the difference between them and why, and how is it calculated?)

Which is better, which is more efficacious (and why) and which of them are a better use of the skills and powers at my disposal?

That's easy to learn.

1d6 means: roll 1 dice with 6 sides
1d8 means roll 1 dice with 8 sides

1d6 + 2 means: roll 1 dice with 6 sides and add 2 to the result.

so while both your options (cantrip: 1d8 and sword:1d6+2) have the same possible max result (8) DP was hinting at using your sword since it definitely deals at least 3 points of damage (1+2) while your cantrip possibly only 1 - since the goblin is defeated with 2 points it makes more sense to uses your sword since it basically guarantees his defeat once you actually succeeded hitting him.

Ah, thank you, @twietee, for that explanation. Very much appreciated.

Very well, then, although somewhere along the line, I appear to have acquired some small proficiency in a number of different weapons (something of an unexpected surprise, because I confess that I was less diligent than I might have been, and paid considerably less heed to Martial Skills and Studies than many of my classmates, preferring to study my books), I do have some skill with the shortsword, and possess a finely crafted and exquisitely keenly honed blade. Dwarf forged, if my Grandsire spoke true.

Let us try that, then. I advance to the goblin, at Portia's feet, Dwarf forged short sword in hand and strike (what I sincerely hope is) a killing blow.
