Ah, thank you, @twietee, for that explanation. Very much appreciated.

Very well, then, although somewhere along the line, I appear to have acquired some small proficiency in a number of different weapons (something of an unexpected surprise, because I confess that I was less diligent than I might have been, and paid considerably less heed to Martial Skills and Studies than many of my classmates, preferring to study my books), I do have some skill with the shortsword, and possess a finely crafted and exquisitely keenly honed blade. Dwarf forged, if my Grandsire spoke true.

Let us try that, then. I advance to the goblin, at Portia's feet, Dwarf forged short sword in hand and strike (what I sincerely hope is) a killing blow.
You step towards the fallen goblin and, with the shortword, stab --

>>> Battle over!

--- MEANWHILE ---

Claus slowly struggled to his feet, the woods spinning around him. The spinning continues as Claus forced himself to stand upright. Unsheathing his sword, Claus drove it into the ground and leaned on it as a cane as the woods slowly spun to a stop.

"Lesser men would have been dead."

Claus started at the voice. It was his voice... but he did not utter the words. Claus looked up, and saw... himself.

But it is not him; this Claus is wearing completely black; a black armor, a black cape, and a greatsword with a black hilt at his hip. He is looking at Claus with a cruel sneer.

>>> @Plutonius how do you respond?

veery interesting.....

well done syllin!
what should we do know?
go to where the 3 goblins came from?
go back west towards the human voice?
go back for Master Fletcher anyway, since in principle we still do not know anything about him?

I believe the three were looking for us, so two were alarmed by the one who spotted us. So going into that direction should be rather save but:

Imho, we should leave the bridge and look after Claus. Do we have a rope though?

Thank you, Ser Bartholomeus.

Hm. Ah, @ravenvii, I take it that we do not hear - or, have not heard - this unsettling exchange between Claus and a doppelgänger - or his subconscious - if that is what it is.
>>> correct, you and the others in the passage have no idea of what is happening with Claus. I was considering having the exchange occur via PM, but decided that, for the enjoyment of the story, it should be public. I do trust that you will play your characters as if you are not aware of what is happening elsewhere (i.e. with Claus).

Naturally.

We still have the rope.

My recollection is that I was the last to use it and untied myself after I had safely clambered upon onto that rickety bridge; this was after I had been so kindly assisted in my ascent, (by Ser Bartholomeus) and after Master Fletcher had taken an unfortunate tumble downwards, to be rushed out of sight.

My recollection is that the rope is still attached to the bridge, so we had best retrieve it.

Respond: What sorcery is this ? Are you working for the accursed goblins ? I'm not sure my companions still live after that deluge collapsed the bridge but you will not stop me from finding out once my gear dries out and I'm able to get some light.

The other Claus laughed. "Those goblins? The only reason you still live is because it pleases my master that you are massacring the goblins. Klarg is a... nuisance that my master would like to be rid of," the other Claus smiled void of any trace of benevolence.

the rope is still tied the bridge, on the east side next to the wall, basically a few inches from our noses.
one of the half has knots every couple of feet, which should make it much easier to go up and down.
i am not sure we want to remove it for now. depending where we are going or coming from, we might still need to access the bridge from below, or have a quick escape from above,

but apart the rope: E?W?N?S? we are literally at a crossroad

S

Should we go all or just me? I could cure his wounds if need be. Of course there is the danger of another goblin patrol coming back to the hideout.

But good idea about the rope - we should leave it hanging since we will likely need it later.

@ravenvii I will loot the goblin next to me and then head back to the bridge and spend a moment at the western entrance if I can still hear those voices.

Respond: Who is your master ?
"The question should be; whose side will you be on? If you choose wisely, you will be generously rewarded, indeed."

Suddenly, it is your father standing before you. "My son. You do not fit with those people in there," he pointed towards the cave "you belong with those who will help you reclaim Thundertree. For your family, for your legacy! Those... weaklings will not -- cannot -- help you! Listen to yourself! Look into yourself and you will see the truth, my son! Return glory to our family name!"

Suddenly, it is Claus once again. "And my master can -- and will -- grant you the chance. If you choose to serve him, he will deliver Thundertree to you."

My one concern about the rope is that we may lose it if some miscreant decides to cut the bridge. I am not so sure that leaving it behind - given that our first rope has been otherwise put to use - is an outstanding idea, as, if we lose it, we lack ropes entirely until we can come to a more civilised and cultivated spot and remedy this deficiency by buying another rope or two.

*To myself: And a - suppresses muttered oath in Elven High Archaic - grappling hook.*

Respond: I'm more then capable along with my friends of reclaiming Thundertree. I am a hero of the people. If you are afraid to tell me the name of your master, I have no need of knowing it. If you are not going to tell me anything useful, you might as well leave so I can finish drying off.

"Is that so? Seems you are not as useful as my master believes."

The other Claus draws out his sword and you see that the blade is as black as the darkest of nights. He approaches you with the grace of a cat, his sword swinging in his hands.

I have a horrid feeling that whatever - or whoever - is due to meet us will lay on a welcoming party - of the exceedingly warm variety - for us somewhere in the vicinity of the bridge.

Late to the story progress, but a party who commits itself totally to a course of action where they don't know if they might face 3-1 odds? Brave lads and lasses. Hmm. :)

Intriquing and exciting! :D

@ravenvii I'll go back to the bridge and take a good look into the western entrance. Do I see or hear something noteworthy?

If not, I will climb down the rope and head to the main entrance from where we came.

To the others: I think it's enough when I'm going alone - you could secure the bridge, so we don't have the same hassle with the rope all over again.
