Today I encountered another problem where, after logging in, the left half of the screen appeared noticeably darker than the right half. Problem resolved itself after restarting Mac. Not sure what sort of issue this is.
I don't think it's bad, maybe just a sync problem between the display and the GPU. I had that with my Dell UP2715K (5K model) a few times in the whole 7 years. Switch off the display and PC/Mac once and everything was OK again.

I guess I'm glad to be keeping my Studio Displays.
Yep. Same here. As I said before - to make the change it would have needed to be a slam dunk. Clearly isn't that. And frankly I think if I were starting clean slate today, I'd choose two ASD over Dell for same money.

In my opinion, is not worth to change from Studio Display to Dell 6K, but someone like me using iMac 5K for a very long time and wanna upgrade from Intel to ARM Mac, I think is a very good choice. iMac screen compare to ASD is nearly identical(I watch many reviews from the web and went to the Apple store to compare it by myself too), I also consider to buy a XDR but it is a 4 years old product and is double the price of the Dell, I love glossy screen too but after 2 weeks of use, matte screen isn't that bad, color is very accuarate, less glares and my eyes feel a lot better now(maybe cause of the bigger screen). Double the price for a same resolution monitor, does it worth to pay that much, what if a new model XDR coming out later this year. this is why I choose Dell 6K instead of ASD or XDR.

I get that. Probably comes down to whether one prefers two monitors or one. I've generally found I like multiple displays over a single big one. But I see both sides. Starting fresh, the Dell appears to be a solid option. For sure it's nice to have another choice for those of us that insist on retina and can't get satisfied with 4K.

I would prefer one larger monitor over two myself, but given the Dell's giant webcam up top, that's got to be something that functions. The Studio Display's webcam has been criticized (personally, I think it's fine), but plop a Logitech on top of it if you need to and the built-in one completely disappears. The same can't really be done for the Dell.

I'd love an Apple XDR, but $6000 is more than I'm willing to pay for a display regardless of quality. I spent $3000 on my pair of ASDs and that's probably my limit. The Dell is definitely compelling, so maybe at some point they'll release a display-only model without the webcam and speakers and such for a few hundred dollars less.

I bought a used XDR for about $5K all in. It was one of the finest "things" I've ever seen. For reasons specific to that example of the XDR I didn't end up keeping it. However I will say that I can absolutely see why it is worth the money. While the $6K plus tax is a major impediment to me buying one what kills it for me is that it is a years old product at this point. With no discounts ever (no refurb for example) I'm out. That price isn't necessarily a show stopper for me if Apple releases V2 with newer tech and features.

I'm willing to pay $5K for an excellent 32" display. Just not for the XDR now that it's 4 years old. If Apple releases v2, I'd probably buy it.

Trick is, the XDR is still the overall "best" 32" computer display out there at the moment based on the competition I have seen.

Only thing I’d like is if the XDR used the same tech as the MBP displays (miniLED) to get more dimming zones; I have no need for more resolution or higher refresh rates.

I do find it interesting how often I hear on this forum people clamoring for newer display tech and complaining that a display is old. It hasn’t been long enough for me— I still remember when Apple exited the display business and still feel glad they make a couple different displays. But I get wanting to buy tech at its freshest.

I’m inching towards picking one up. I actually like that it’s still a “dumb” display and figure we’re further out from an upgrade than I feel like waiting at this point, I guess, since I haven’t yet found any evidence of when TB5 will start to become available. I considered dual studio displays— lots of “retina” real estate for the buck compared to the XDR. I just personally don’t do well with side-by-side dual monitor setups.

For now, but not for too much longer.

We know multiple manufacturers have 32” Mini-LED 6K and 8K displays coming, with 4-5k zones. They should outperform the XDR unless you specifically need its 1600nits.

They just can’t come fast enough.

Funny - what I'd like is the higher refresh rate. What I love about my MBP is the 120hz. The ASD is very, very good. But the scrolling on the MBP is just amazing.

Me too, High refresh rate and TB4 with daisy chain for the next gen is a must. (better add a speaker to it)

I am guessing we will need to wait for TB5 to support the rumored 7K Pro Display XDR, unless Apple puts an HDMI 2.1 port on it. 😲

The 16" M1 Max MBP I have is work-issued, which is the only reason I have it. Fortunately I don't use the screen on it often and haven't acclimated to "promotion". ;) I do notice the difference though when scrolling on my iPad mini vs my M1 iPad Pro; I feel like promotion especially benefits smaller screens where more scrolling happens.

For ProMotion on an XDR-- here are the things I consider in terms of timing:

a) the usb/thunderbolt bandwidth to support it isn't there yet (unless, as CWallace mentioned, Apple included an HDMI 2.1 port... seems unlikely)

b) how much GPU horsepower is needed to run the types of work people want to at those specs? Maybe it exists, I've mostly only considered the bandwidth bottleneck.

It's likely a matter of time. But even that aside... I wonder if the price would go up. I don't see Apple's displays as being updated that frequently such that they're at all concerned about maintaining specific price points.

So yeah. Do I want to wait some indefinite period of time? And more than that.... if the price does go north another thousand or 2, is pro motion worth it to me? The XDR is already overkill for my needs :p

Bandwidth isn't a problem now that DisplayPort 2.0/2.1 is current. That problem is based on old DP 1.4 math.

And TB4 supports DP2.0. You can run 6K120 over USB4 for that matter. DP Alt Mode is pretty great.
I don't of know any Thunderbolt 4 controllers that support DP2.0 (UHBR 10 or greater).

What USB4 controller can do 6K120? It would require UHBR 10 with DSC@12bpp. Another possibility is dual tile HBR2 also with DSC@12bpp.

HBR3 can do 6K120 using DSC@9bpp but I don't know of any OS that will choose DSC@9bpp.

Is there also a panel that is made in glossy? I don't want to have a matt panel.

No dual tile needed. https://www.displayport.org/pr/vesa...rformance-to-usb4-and-new-usb-type-c-devices/

Thunderbolt 4 includes DP2.0.
https://tripplite.eaton.com/product...t 4 includes support for,5K display at 60 Hz.

Epilogue to my returning the U3224KB:

Today I picked up a 42” LG C2 at Best Buy’s sale. With 5-year Geeksquad warranty, which covers burn-in, I was still under $1,000. I will use a monitor arm and VESA shelf to mount the webcam.

Initial impressions: the picture and sound are better than the Dell. Yes, the resolution is lower, but man does a glossy OLED look great.

I’ll wait a week to make sure that I want to stay at 42”. And then I’ll have an excuse to upgrade to a Mac mini pro for HDMI 2.1, which should give another nice boost (10-bit, 120Hz).
