I have to say, a week having this phone, and I'm enjoying it. I love the great display, like I've said in apps that offer black AMOLED setting it looks amazing plus it hides the notch. So A+ screen.

Oh yeah a flat screen YES. I don't like curved edge screens or even the slight minor curve on most recent phones. Thank you for going to a full flat straight edge display. I love that.

Battery life? LOL. Holy cow wow. Seriously destroys my recent Pixel phones. on the next level. This is truly a 2 day phone. No Pixel I owned could barely make it a day let alone 2. This feels like I get double the screen on time. Seems like it's a 9h or 10h SoT phone.

vibration is best in class.

iOS has come a long way since my last iPhone the 7 Plus. I do prefer stock Android better, but iOS 14.3 isn't bad and seems doable for me.

The phone feels smooth and fluid. No hiccups or lag really. But I imagine if this had a 120hz screen this would be the warp speed smoothest phone ever. But that'll come in the next iPhone.

Overall I like this. It's definitely a change for me. I'm more digging just the hardware of this phone, the amazing screen, loud speakers, smooth and fast UI. The battery life.

If the rumors are true the iPhone 13 Pro Max will have a 120hz screen. Much smaller reduced notch. More customization in iOS 15. Better privacy and security. And the typical yearly hardware updates, I think Android hos some serious competition here to be worried about.

Only if Google would build a high end Pixel 6 XL like on the quality level of the rumored 13 Pro Max hardware and features, that would be a dream come true. Or I would love a Pixel 5 XL, make a mix of designs of the Pixel 5 all screen little bezels but in the size of the iPhone 12 Pro Max and same build and materials. Then I woke up.

But to wrap up, I really like this 12PM is it my fav phone ever? No. But it's very good. It's more iOS I'm so so on but it's gotten better.

Couple things I really miss are AoD ( Always on Display ) I'm a huge fan of that. And the gesture based navigation is better on the Pixel's it can do much more with back and forward and fluidly moving around the OS better.

Many a day I wish I could drop Android onto my 12 ProMax.

Actually kinda thought about this myself. Not as much as the M1 mac lately but I've been a little curious. Couple reasons:

I think I'm a little bored with Android. New s21 just announced and meh ?

The monthly "security" updates.

I barely customize my phone anymore.

Don't ROM.

Basically waste my time trying to maintain root and keeping updated to fend off ads the best I can.

The ecosystem thing.

The last couple pixels I've gotten just pretty much sit around.

Seems like the big G is taking control away and slowly closing off android.

I have never seriously taken a look at an iPhone. Just used an ipad mini which I did find backwards.

Anyway, sorry if I've thread jacked. Haven't been around these parts much in a while.

Will be following this thread ??

Try a new Launcher.

Forgot to ask, how is the call blocking spam protection on the iPhone vs the pixels? I've found a lot of calls don't ring, pop up a dialog, "block and report as spam" (or something similar) and on the call log it just says disconnected on my XL 2

Both have their hits and misses. I find my Razer is better than stock iOS.
Still, I added Hiya to both. iOS version has a few more detail options. Android seems to let less through.

I'm glad I steered clear of this thread up to now. Looks like it turned in to what I thought it would. But now that the guilty party is suspended, back on topic.

With the eventual move from Apple to make a portless iphone that relies on wireless charging that we all see coming...what do you think Apple will use in their marketing and reveal to make it seem like users are getting a new feature rather than an Apple cash grab? I know Samsung will surely follow suit so let's not turn this into another one of those debates. But I honestly can't think of how Apple will spin it to make the customer feel like they're getting some new great feature when really it's just a way for Apple to get more money through Magsafe.

I think they're going to characterize it as some kind of convenience being gained, as opposed to it being an inconvenience. As someone who has been using wireless charging since it came out, I am really hoping Apple doesn't end up doing this, because it would be absolutely terrible for several reasons. For one, it's hard to use your phone when it's on a wireless charger, unless it's the type that's propped up. Secondly, wireless charging is much slower than a good corded fast charge. Sometimes, you don't have a lot of time to put your phone on a wireless charger, and need to shoot some juice into it quickly. Next, as someone who travels fairly frequently, I tend to keep my phone charged when I'm on the plane, so I can start with a full charge when I land. With only wireless charging, that wouldn't be very practical.

If I am not wrong, wireless charging is also gloriously inefficient as against wired charging. I could be wrong. I personally do not see any advantage of wireless charging in my use case. But Apple will not want a USB-C on the iPhone to the best of my understanding - they want to milk something so simple as charging a phone with introductions as MagSafe that is not worthwhile if I want to use my phone and charge it along with. All they need do is retain the option to charge wirelessly, bringing whatever tech they want to, but give a darned USB-C on the iPhone. But they will most likely not do this. They talk about inclusivity in the world and all that about environment, but they will do everything in their power to get people to buy their cables and chargers rather than use a universal standard USB-C for all devices, Apple or otherwise.

You're not wrong at all. You are spot on. I have a wireless charger in every room in my house, but I use them more so for convenience than for utility. What I mean is use them as a convenient place to set my phone down on an end table while I'm on the sofa, and it still charges. When I'm laying down, I can reach over and set the phone down, and it charges. I can pick it up and not worry about wires. But I don't do these things if I'm in need of a substantial charge. If I need a big charge or I don't have a lot of time and need as much of a charge as possible, I'm going wired.

If the 12 pro max battery wasn’t such a champ I would maybe have more of a need for wired charging but as it is wireless is just more suitable to pop it on and it works

got two in the lounge and MagSafe duo on the bedroom. So going portless does not matter to me but I get everybody has different usage

Tbh… you are the reason Apple plans to get rid of the charging port.

Having them in every room kind of defeats the purpose of having a wired charging port… not trying to debate you or anything on the topic. But you are the perfect candidate for their ad.

Haven’t got one yet. I don’t mind using the charging port, however… when Apple decides to do it, won’t matter much to me. It kind of gives the possibility of underwater filming… like Rene mention in one of his video.

When do you guys think iPhone will become portless? This year? Next? Are there any solid rumours hinting at timescale out there already?

Ummm.. this year is too soon. They are getting us ready for it with the omission of the charging brick from the box.

I'm leaning toward next year. Im just looking at how it was with the audio port.. I recall listening to Gruber and how Apple decided to take away the audio port before the redesign. So, news won't be surrounded by the omission of the charging port on the redesign.

So, my best guess is next year... Apple normally stick with a design for about 3 years before switching it up. This iPhone 12 design is gonna last 3 years... on that 3rd year, in 2022, we will see no charging port.. imo.

Even with great battery life, there's always going to be a time when you will eventually need a quick charge. The best battery life I've had on a phone was the LG Flex. I could get 48 hours on a charge with normal use. Even with that, there were times I would need to stick it on a charger, like if I'd forgotten to do it overnight and I'd been in the field working a lot. Even the best battery life needs a boost from time to time.

It actually doesn't defeat the purpose at all. You just aren't understanding the purpose. It's simple convenience of being able to top off anywhere in my house, with no cords to deal with. Just sit down and move on, and when I want it, just pick it up and go. I can do it while walking past. I don't even have to stop. If I need a real charge, like if I'm low on battery and about to go back out, I'm using a 45W charger with a USB C 3.1 Gen 3 PD cable.

Unless they start adding wireless to public areas, business folk and travelers will give hew and cry.
Need more efficient device and next gen battery first.
Agreed. It would be difficult to suggest a phone be used as a business device when you can't rely on having efficient charging access in the field. Also, many of us need the ability to connect our phone to the laptop to transfer certain things. That would be a pretty significant loss.

My guess is 2023. Apple are usually good about tipping their hand well in advance so when they finally do it, it's something that was expected rather than a complete shock to their customers.

Wireless magsafe power bank type things will be here soon I'm guessing.
They already have them. It will be another revenue stream for Apple. Licensing MagSafe

Frankly, if Apple goes wireless charging only, I will have to think about my next phone when the current phone I have needs to be replaced. I am not about to buy wireless chargers just for having an Apple device, especially if I must buy into their MagSafe ecosystem for better charging. If they must go port-less, they best include MagSafe in the box until the time they are ready to care for the planet again with a new proprietary charging system.

Then again if Apple goes wireless only there is a fairly high chance Android handset manufacturers will mock and likely follow suit ?

//
Seems like almost yearly I go though the phase of researching Apple stuff, this year it's been iPhone as well as M1 mac and once again I haven't been able to go through actually putting the device in my cart and pressing checkout ?

This is correct, but I think they might still not, considering the market that Android thrives in. Only the high-end devices that are marketed as direct iPhone replacements are ones that copy everything Apple. I do not see wireless charging trickling down to the price levels that a lot of Android devices come for. I am even looking at a OnePlus Nord, that does not have wireless charging. Most, very feature-rich devices are priced lower than that, that will do perfectly for my use. I do not see them coming with wireless charging for a few more years at least.

The only reason I am with iOS and not Android is because of Apple's privacy controls that a user is generally aware of and can control. Such as, for most Android apps, I still cannot disallow them from accessing my contacts and camera if I want them to function properly. Why? Because they have just not coded their apps that way yet, despite Android supporting such coding for a while now. With Apple, this is being forced by Apple onto developers, keeping developers more on their toes about these matters.

However, lately, I am getting a feeling that iPhones are being priced exorbitantly (in my market). I mean to say, an iPhone Mini 64 GB is USD 959 in my country. A Mac mini with M1 starts at USD 890 in comparison. An older iPhone 11 with 64 GB storage is USD 755.

If not for some privacy decisions and some other conveniences that come with having a combination of macOS and iOS, I could get a phone more than enough for my needs from a phone for under USD 200, and if I wanted to splurge for say a OnePlus 8T 128 GB with Android 11 out of the box, that would be USD 480.

Strictly talking of phones here. The Mac, while being priced way, way higher than it ever was, still represents adequate value for the prices.
