iMessage is all about convenience. Sharing of media is much easier using imessage. Most in the US don't use Whatsapp. Few care to mess with Facebook messenger. They just go to the default texting app by, well, default I suppose. Most of the time that results in compressed images and compressed grainy videos. That really is the only allure to me. I know to use Google Photos or Dropbox links but most don't care to mess with that. My wife for instance couldn't figure out how to save a video off a link I sent via Google Photos. It isnt exactly intuitive. So with iMessage, it's mostly the cliche that's always been associated with the iphone. "It just works". iMessage is about the only thing missing from my S21 Ultra. That and a working DJI app for my drone, but that's the app dev's fault.

I also bought into the M1 hype. It wouldn't even be a decent Chromebook if it wasn't for Chrome. Don't see any of the advantages that are often parakeeted like:

- "It's so efficient it can run on minimal ram" when reality is during sleep with single browser tab it uses up all 16GB memory then creates a swap file wearing out SSD faster. Booting fresh into desktop uses significantly more memory than Windows > Linux > ChromeOS.

- "Touchpad is so amazing" when reality is palm rejection is broken

- Almost every bundled app is nagware for Apple subscription services, run Apple TV nags for subscription, run Music nags for subscription, run News nags for subscription...

- Backwards coming from other ecosystems when Touch ID authentication is enabled but still have to use a password upon boot and randomly elsewhere

- "Blah integration blah blah" when reality is it's still easier to fire up Chrome to reply to SMS/messaging, making/taking calls/voicemail via Google Voice POTS #s and universal SMB network sharing is broken

And, so on...

Sounds like you’re well invested in the Google ecosystem, as some of your complaints allude to.

Maybe it's because I don't own any other Apple devices? No iWatch I'm not a fan of watches at all. No iPad, don't want a tablet. No iMac as I'm a PC Gamer and build my own high end custom rigs.

And of the people I text, it's probably 60% Android users and 40% iPhone users.

My one brother lives in Europe now, we used to use WhatsApp a ton, we all switched to Telegram now, so actually Telegram app is a big one we use for texting between family now.
It’s all convenience really. If you have all Apple products and family/friends are on iPhones, it just makes it more convenient. It’s all encrypted, it pops up on all devices, etc. Most don’t know or care. Like Google RCS. Ask 100 people, 2 know and care, everyone else is blank stares ?

No, because Apple doesn't have comparable quality of services. Apple Maps is closer to catching up but lacks browser access for cross platform devices.

because the blue bubbles are magic lol

for me I like it as it syncs so well with all my devices. certainly my Apple Watch, iPad, Mac. the fact WhatsApp only really works well on my phone is a downside.
I do like the fact that I can use it on all my devices. It's nice to be able to reply to a message when I'm on my Mac or iPad, or use one of my HomePods to send a message when I'm not with my phone. I only wish more of my contacts used it. Most of them use WhatsApp. WhatsApp is a PITA for multiple device use. You can use it only on one other device e.g Mac or iPad . And to use it on another device you have to sign in and that signs you out from another device.

Spot on about Whatsapp. I so want to delete it!

It is weird.. Scrolling on my 12 PM‘s screen feels more fluid compared to my 120 Hz Note 20 Ultra!
Really? I think its noticeably worse compared to my S20 plus and now my S21 Ultra. However, I will say iOS transition animations are very smooth and polished. Apple are very clever with their animations and transitions. They make them purposely slow so that any hiccups in performance or in the OS are not noticeable. Its very well done.

Purposely slow? I doubt that. I do wish they would speed them up like the Apple Watch open app animations.

100%. I thought this was common knowledge.

By making the transition animations slower/longer but smooth, it gives the apps/os more time to process that way any delay or lag isn't noticed by the user.

If this was the case then the Apple Watch would be having hiccups when opening apps… I think it’s simply a decision to have a certain speed on IOS.

Having these two settings enabled makes my 12 Pro Max feel pretty fast and smooth. But with those off the phone feels too slow and animations too long.

Save for the Pencil support on the phone, pretty much summarizes it for me. One other item I’d add is the ability to set more types of apps as defaults instead of just mail client and web browser. I’d love to be able to set different navigation, music and calendar apps.
Agreed 100 percent. I think it will all come in a year or two.

I’ve bought a pixel 2Xl phone. I thought I would give the pixel line a try. If I like it I will buy a newer device when android 12 comes out. I will continue to use the iPhone as my daily driver but I’m curious to try a pixel phone.

To me when I enable these settings, I find it just does what it says, reducing motion, but the actual time to navigate the UI stays the same. When ever I have an Android phone (currently waiting on a S21 actually), I have animations off completely and love the instant nature of it.
