Actually its not that at all - at least for me - I don't want it switching on when I open the lid. Er that's it, I don't need advice on cleaning it - I don't care about that.

It - until now - is non standard behaviour to boot up on opening, I want the option to return to that. I'm totally astonished that I should have to justify my reason to return to what has been standard behaviour since about '82.

I appreciate the advice, but there are two people here that fly in helecopters that need it properly off, another that is worried about it switching on in a rucksack - and that's just the people commenting here.

Has anyone spoken to apple about this?

I'm not commenting on the auto boot, although I think it may be a function of Apple having visibility on how the devices are used and trying to make the Mac experience more like iOS where you wake rather than boot (but that's another conversation).

My point is that cleaning the keyboard and computer should be done as if the computer is on, and I got the impression (although I may be mistaken) that some of the complaints were from people who would clean the machine differently depending on if it was powered up or not.

Auto-wake from Sleep is different, and acceptable IMO, from auto-wake from Off. Is auto-wake from Off even iOS behavior? I also agree that it should be an option.

I agree auto wake from sleep on macOS would be closer to iOS raise to wake / tap to wake, but if you plug in an iPhone or iPad that is off, it does turn on…

I’ve had success with powering the machine off with the lid open, misting a microfiber with cleaning solution (usually diluted isopropyl alcohol) and then just wiping it somewhat quickly. Sometimes I have to go through this process twice, but in most cases I can clean the keyboard before the machine fully powers on to the point where smushing all the keys becomes an issue. I thought I remembered reading about a program that disabled the keyboard for this purpose, but it would’ve been pre-Apple Silicon and I’m not sure if it still works.

Surely this is about 'expected behaviour' it didn't, now it does...

In my book that is totally fine as long as there is an option to go back to the previous behaviour.

Even the (comparatively minor) excrement show that is currently Windows 11 (very much a work in progress IMHO) has the redesigned start menu (as was said earlier "too many clicks now) but it at least allows you to switch the window from the centre to the side.

The rest is hunting around for hacks that are usually there somewhere to get what you want.

I have seen a few threads on this issue but no answers so I am posting this. I have even chatted with Apple support and they gave me terminal commands that didn't work. None of the threads or terminal commands work on the M1 based Macs and auto boot is really annoying. I have had my laptop power on after I shut it down?

I am looking for someone who has been able to solve this problem on a MBP M1 Pro Mac. Thank You!
What terminal commands did they give you that didn't work?

Was it this one?

sudo nvram AutoBoot=%00

It works on an Intel MacBook but doesn’t work on an M1 MacBook.
I understand that. if you saw my original post, I specifically asked what codes did Apple give and said that one to verify if that was one of them. In no way shape or form, did I ever say it worked or would work for an M1 mac.

I was responding to the notion that someone on YouTube got “it” to work. Probably not on an M1. I didn’t review 4 pages of posts going back to late 2021.

Evidently, searching and still haven't found the answer (if there is one) I did come across this:

"do NOT try sudo nvram AutoBoot=false. It will prevent booting at all and I had to do a recovery startup and select the main startup disk to get back in.'

I had this happen but all I had to do to recover was force shutdown the M1 MBA, wait 5 minutes and then restart. The problem corrected itself but I did stop experimenting with different nvram settings after that.

So there is no answer?

If you don't understand why I don't want it to turn on when I open the screen I will re-iterate what I already said. If I am cleaning the keyboard or deck of the laptop it turns on when I would like to clean before I turn it on. Secondly I have had the laptop power on when closing the lid after shutdown and once in a bag. I don't want the device to turn on when I don't know like in a bag as it could overheat. It is also simply about choice. Why have a power button if I can't use it the way I would like.
Exactly, this is why I have a £2000 laptop sitting at home which I cant use because I can’t take it offshore in a helicopter for that reason, they are scared it opens and overheats and potentially goes on fire, I have offered to tape it closed but they wont budge, anyone with the M1 processor that cant switch off cant take it in a helicopter. Gutted to be honest but you would think Apple would give an update on how to solve this. I know a few guys who won’t buy the new laptops because of this issue

Just bought an M1 MBP 14"

Been using MBP for almost 20 years now

I had no idea this was a thing - having avoided most MBP for the last 8 years or so

Auto start up is bollocks

I'd have immediately fired the person that suggested this to me as a useful feature

Be careful there are a ton of people on this thread who think otherwise.

I had one person tell me if I am opening the computer then I must want to use it? Ignoring things like wanting to clean the keyboard without it turning on when you finish using the device or having turn on inside a bag.

I mean why do we have a power button if it is useless and redundant.

I still can't stand auto boot and all I am asking is a simple toggle switch in settings to turn it off!

I have a Lenovo laptop that defaults to the same behavior but you can turn it off easily and only the power button or opening the lid if you choose will turn it on.

It is crazy that they haven't already implemented a way to turn it off but Apple in their infinite wisdom has decided for us and I suspect it is way for them to keep you constantly connected so they can gather data.

It I'd so annoying when I put the laptop in my bag and I hear the startup chime.

Having sat here wondering for a few hours - I can think of only one useful reason for this feature

But I can't think of any reason as to why it isn't just an optional feature

It might very well be useful in the case of loss or theft -
