If you have no clue what you're missing then you likely didn't need to make the purchase. If you believe your iP4 has sufficed then stick with that. The second I got my iPad I stopped using my netbook; sold it, stopped using my iPhone around the house; ended up making the decision to switch to another carrier.

My theory in life is if you have to go to an internet forum to figure out what you need to do with your new toy to enjoy it then you need to exercise your rights outlined in your return policy.

Uh, why the hell would you drop that much money on something out of pure curiosity?

My suggestion is rethink the way you throw your money around. Don't buy stuff you don't need and then complain you have no use for it.

Just got an iPad today. Up to now I have felt that I really wouldn't be able to use one but the local Best Buy got them in and I succumbed to the curiosity. Got the 32GB one.
Pluses:
Very cool technology

Minuses
Doesn't really do anything my IP4 doesn't do
Can't use a VGA adapter to mirror the display unless you are using certain apps.

So what am I missing here? I have 14 days to return to BB and at this point, I am very inclined to return it.

Don't think about it. Be about it. Take it back.... Make it happen, capt'n.

Or you know, you could actually try USING the thing... Download some apps, try doing the things you would normally do on your ip4 and pc and see if it fits in. If you still can't think of any use for it then return it.

Why on earth did you buy it if you didn't have a use for it?

I too have Ip4 and the Ipad. When I first got my iPad, I felt the same way you did. But...that quickly changed as I got used to using the iPad to browse the web, use documents, and watch netflix, all without having to stare at a screen that really is too small for any long term use.
Give the ipad time, and you will find it invaluable like I do.

I couldn't imagine not having my iPad . I use it while siting on the couch at night watching tv, where I tend to browse the net during commercials.

Yes the phone does it all too, but I actually no longer use the phone for anything other than phone calls or checking my emails or the weather when I'm at home.

An amazing amount of replies telling me not to waste my money if I can't find a use for the iPad. But only a couple telling me why they decided to go with the iPad.
So, to those that actually TRIED to help, thank you. To the rest, I spend my money as I see fit. This wont cost me a dime since I can take it back and I learned something besides.

Another one of these threads but I'll bite.

"Doesn't really do anything my IP4 doesn't do"

Could you elaborate?
Right out of the box, the ipad doesn't have a camera, no stocks app, no weather app, no game center, none of the utilities that iOS 4.1 has, no retina display.
So basically, since I am under contract for the iphone, doesn't seem to make much sense to keep the ipad does it?

Did that help? ;)

Curiosity.

Probably will, thanks.

Its not about what your iPad can or cannot do compared to the iPhone, its about what it can do better.

Return it though, if you feel its not worth it.

I don't have an iPad yet, but I want one, but then I always say to myself how I have a Macbook pro and I can just use that around the house.

Bloomberg for iPhone. A free Stocks app that blows the native app out of the water.

The Weather Channel for iPhone. Free and also blows the native app out of the water.

What utilities in 4.1 are you missing so badly that you absolutely cannot wait until the next iPad release? Is a camera on a large device (that will generally be cumbersome and clunky) THAT important to you?

The iPad does many things MUCH better than an iPhone ever will, simply because of the size. Browsing the net, typing quickly, redesigned Mail, reading books/magazines, etc. If you find that you have no need for any of these tasks, then you aren't part of the target market.

Right out of the box?

Camera? If you asking for FaceTime, I'll give you that one. But for taking videos and photos?

Stocks? There's an App for that, check out the App Store.

Weather? There's an App for that too.

Game Center? Coming this November. Actually, I have it now, I'm running iOS 4.2 Beta 1.

Retina Display? Well there are countless threads about that, but let me ask you this. Do you prefer reading books on your iP4? Do you prefer surfing on the iP4? If you say yes to both, then you REALLY prefer zooming & scrolling.

Winking back @ you ;)

Honestly, if you really don't like it take it back. I know I bought a 64 GB 3G one from Best Buy because that was the only 3G model they had in stock and I was literally almost sick from thinking I spent that much money on an iPad so I took it back and in 3 days I had a 16 GB 3G model for $250 less (due to not being charged sales tax).

Honestly, I have an iPhone 4 and if I had to choose between the iPhone and the iPad I would throw my iPhone 4 in the trash in a second. The only thing the iPhone can do that my iPad can't is take pictures/video/Facetime, make phone calls, and text. Since I don't every use the first group a dumb phone could easily replace my iPhone.

I personally love being able to check and send email, browse the web, read the Bible, update my journal, work on work documents, read the news, etc. all on the bigger screen of my iPad. But again, if you don't feel it is a good device for you or worth the money you spent then seriously take it back - just because it works well for someone like me doesn't mean it will work well for you.

Thanks, great input. I think the fact I am locked into the iphone contract is the biggest issue. Yes the iPad does those things better, but after having it in hand, and knowing I have to keep the iphone, I have to let the iPad go. In a while, after I am out from under the iphone, I will again give serious consideration to the ipad. But at this point, it just isn't the right thing at the right time.

Thanks to all, and I mean all, for the input. But it isn't to be this time. Maybe next time.

Ohhhh ohh ok, now that's understandable.

actually if you bought it from bestbuy and are going to return it after opening, it will cost you a dime.

(about 900 of them actually if you bought the $600 one) thanks to the 15% restocking fee

Really hard for me to compare the iPhone to an iPad. I Hated browsing the web or watching you tube videos on my iPhone or any other smart phone on the market. The screen is way to small and can strain you eyes and yes the retina display would make much more sense on an iPad then an iPhone.
Sine I got my iPad i returned my iPhone and got a blackberry instead.
I got my iPad for two reasons 1) watch you tube videos and 2) netflix and be able to do this wile I'm in bed......priceless if you ask me.
I had my iPad for one week now and I just can't put this thing down. It's the best thing that hit the market in a very long time imho. Way better then a laptop, since i can actually keep this thing on my lap comfortably without burning my legs off.
A waste of money? Not in a million years. A waste of money is a 3000$ gaming laptop with a battery life of one hour nd defies the purpose of being called a laptop.
I think the iPad is pure genius.
I honestly don't care for a camera on the iPad i think it's to big to use as a camera use the iPhone for that or a get a real digital camera.
I would like to see apple concentrating on the screen of the iPad. Retina display and a higher resolution and I will be in heaven.
Way to go apple.

While a higher resolution is always nice, I thought the point of the retina display is to reduce the eye strain from trying to make out details on a small screen such as the iPhone's. An iPad is so big, it doesn't *need* such super fine resolution, even if things would look nicer on it if it did.

sometimes I feel the same way. then I lay in bed and browse the internet without having to pinch to zoom everything like on the iphone and I get it. plus I have the 4.2beta on mine. ipad is going to get a whole lot more useful once thats released. Plus the battery is unbelievable. I picked mine up today after not using it since thursday. still at 75% I would keep it.
