I agree with a lot of what you say here. The only factor I can see that could potentially cut the life short of a device or ruin the user experience is the updates. Up until 4 weeks ago I couldn’t fault my 6S. Battery life was brilliant, the navigation was smooth between apps etc. Now after 4 iOS 11 updates my phone is still into lower power mode by 2.30pm most days. The animations freeze often too. Today I was trying to take a photo of my two little girls and we all know you have to be quick with kids. The bloody camera froze up! Repeatedly pressing the home button in panic not to miss the opportunity and I get the Apple logo. I actually threw the phone at that point lol.

I do wonder how many more updates my phone will take and it’s just over a year old. It’s pretty bad form by Apple and sadly mine isn’t an isolated case.

My 7 Plus has lower performance, delays and battery life issues on iOS 11 as well. It's just not a good release. Battery life especially has taken a nosedive.

We dont really need to upgrade each year, for some people they fail to see what an upgrade is if its an improvement over the previous device then its worthy of an upgrade for me.

I’m going to have to skip Android in 2018. I usually get at least one Samsung flagship but the cost of the S8+, 8+ and X will have basically exhausted my budget for an additional android phone in 2018.

So for me I’ll be consolidating around iOS for the next couple of years. I’ll give a look to a super discounted Galaxy S10 Exynos in Q4 2019.

I thought you weren’t that happy with the X and very happy with the S8. What happened to change your mind?

Still getting the X, I think it’s size more then anything wins me, I’ll have to get an Apple silicon case though for grip.
If they launch 6.1” models next year it’ll be a shame to lose that compact size. Sony and Apple are the ones doing smaller phones with top specs :(

Just playing devil’s advocate here, but isn’t the Pixel 2 also top specs in a compact phone?

The 5.8 iPhone isn't going away next year.

Yes and no, the build is plastic I think? And it has those big bezels, also I think the screen is 1080P, it’s good, but it’s overpriced I think for what your getting, just like the X and the Pixel 2 XL.

The rumours are starting to suggest otherwise though.

Which rumours are you referring to? Kuo said the 6.1 iPhone is the lower end iPhone with LCD. The display on this one is inferior to the 8 Plus and matches the 8 in PPI but it's also cheaper than it. . The 5.8 iPhone is the mid range iPhone with a smaller display but a better quality OLED display and the 6.5 iPhone X Plus is the flagship

Nah it's suppose to be 5.8 and 6.5

Will certainly get the bigger one next year though. Even though the X is a good size to be fair. Better than i thought.

It’s metal and you’re paying about the same as Apple’s less than 1080p screen with big bezels. I agree that there isn’t much in the small flagship arena, but I’d absolutely add the Pixel 2 to what is currently available there.

I don't think its plastic, I think its just a coating on the actual structural material.

But personally I would love to have a high quality plastic case for my phone. Its totally idiotic to make phones out of glass. Why not make luggage out of glass? Unfortunately most of them are doing it now. Most people put it in a case, so who cares what its made out of. Its not museum art, its a dang phone.

I saw review claiming it was plastic, the XL being metal. I still find it overpriced for what it offers, no point mentioning Apple as it’s been overpriced for years.

Well Apple were using glass about 6 years ago and people got on with it, it made the phone feel pretty luxurious (iPhone 4 and 4S).
It’s a good material, allows wireless charging, and considering the screens have been glass for years and years now then every device is at risk of damage from being dropped.

I disagree that its a good material for phones. People "got on with it" by putting it in a case.... which is made out of plastic (many, if not most people). I don't need a phone to be luxurious. Now with the X, replacing a broken back is $549. So if you drop it and break the front and back, you are going to pay more than most phones cost to replace the two parts that got broken. It is beyond insane to make the back of something cost that much. There are plastics that could have just as much of a high end look and support wireless charging. This fixation with glass will hopefully fade out at some point.

Never going to happen. There is no way after leaving behind cases made of plastic for metal and glass (and now ceramic) that people will accept plastic in their phones. What were the last widely available phones made predominantly from plastic? Galaxy S4/S5 and the Note 3/4. What were they all widely criticized for? Having large swathes of cheap feeling plastic. Guess what Samsung no longer makes their phones out of anymore? ;)

Whether or not it’s smart to make phones with glass panels, they’re not going away for plastic. Thinking OEMs are going to all of a sudden revert back to plastic is a pipe dream.

Actually the back of the X costs peanuts, it is Apple tax slapped on it with the fact the fron includes the screen as I presume they are fused together, and the back is part of the entire chassis so you cannot just replace the glass back, just like the iPhone 4 design.
And cases are also made from leather and silicone too.

I was going to buy an Essential phone today but it's just not ready for prime time yet :(; will wait and see if Oreo fixes those app crashes. If it does, I will pick up an Essential phone. If not, I'll wait for their second phone to drop.

Apple's software and hardware gets more problematic and frustrating with each release. For the price points and growing P.I.T.A. issues, it is no longer worth my money and time to purchase additional Apple hardware.

I'm annoyed with the business model "We'll charge you more, you'll deal with more and more compromises, and you'll still buy our second rate product" business model. It's worse on Macs, honestly. At least with iPhone there are better alternatives. I just can't stand Windows and Chromebooks are not serious computers yet.

For me, iOS is the greatest mobile OS of all-time. It was extremely influential towards Android and other OSes that followed including how to distribute apps with an App Store back in 2008.

But for me, Android is better and my favorite. Greater vs better vs favorite have all different meanings. I like Android the same way I like Jaime Lannister from Game of Thrones' Season 3.

I like complicated. I need to be challenged. Unsure. Unpredictable. Depth. Varied. I am surprised how well an Android with microSD card can work with a Mac. Just use SD adapter and it's faster media file transfers than iPhones syncing to iTunes.

What makes me nuts is having to purchase a new iPhone every year due to a hardware issue. I am not hard on my iPhones. Not hard on my iMac either, but it is also giving me trouble because of sloppy software OS. That the brass live up to that business model and then some...well, I dislike them. And you're right about Macs.

Sticking with this 7+ until an Android alternative that fits my needs and the amount I want to pay comes along. The nice thing is, with folks like Essential, and others I've got more choice now when I am ready to jump.

This is exactly why I switched from iPhone/Apple watch to Note 8/Gear S3 this year. They honestly need to get their s___ together with the increasingly wonky software. I don't understand why tech reviewers continue to gush over products like the overpriced gimmicky touchbar MacBook Pro, under-powered MacBook, and over-priced, under-specced, notched iPhone X. I used to be Apple's biggest fan, steering friends, family, and acquaintances to their products without reservation but things have really gone downhill since around the time of the 5S. Skimping on features, storage, RAM, etc. I'm just surprised more people don't feel the same way. I still have my MBA from 2014, iPad Pro, several aging Apple TV's, and a Time Capsule but I'm planning on branching out as they become obsolete as I'm really getting sick of their business model - "less for more".

Ironic. I used to dislike Apple. And had blackberry for many years. My 4 year old blackberry died at the same time the company did. I did my own shootout and Apple won. Never looked back.

Three MacBook pros one with Touch bar (which is ingenious), apple tv, two iPads later and a 50 person family with iPhones I’m not going to android(and no more Samsung products for me; company that really engages in p/o). Can’t imagine arguing about which texting software lol.

But to each their own views.
