Don’t hold your breath for that. I doubt we’ll see Touch ID on any new models going forward.

Apple never backpedals on features. That would be tantamount to admitting it’s better than Face ID.

That's my prediction as well. And given the gesture-base navigation, yeah, the iOS "home" button as we know it, is dead.

I wonder what Rene Ritchie will have to say.

Well remember that our oled displays are defective. But apple's one is perfect. It is super Retina HD after all.

Stole this from the other Note thread:

Joking aside, I'm happy about the move to OLED. But they certainly deserve every poke and stab. ;)

In all seriousness, I still don't get this. Is there anything out there from Apple explaining their decision on this? Nevermind about symmetry or not, the "ears" are kind of distracting during full video playback. Look at this screen straight from the keynote:

apple-iphone-2017-20170912-11838.JPG
Not a single good explanation.

They'll tell people they are watching the videos wrong

I am going to have a good laugh at the excuses around this incredibly stupid design flaw, when I have time and energy to read through the iPhoneX forum here hopefully I'll have my Note8 with it's glorious and undisturbed 6.3inch WQHD+ 1200nit Infinity Super AMOLED display

How was the FaceID being a total fail on stage? Apple are doing most these days, at least the fanboys will have the sales&profit to tell us about, somehow those became a spec in every iPhone, although I still don't know how that helps the flaws other than encourage Apple to make them again, lol.

Devs can avoid this and black out the ears. I spent a few minutes looking at the design suggestions Apple put up for the X. One thing is certain, Apple is pushing devs to NOT black out the ears, this kind of stupidity sounds like Ive for sure. Also there are safe zones the apps content should fall into, and that makes the content not much larger than on a 7/8 where the content can go farther out. Lastly there is a permanent bar/indicator for the bottom swipe, it can be hid but Apple encourages it to not be hid unless it's a real passive activity like watching video. I'm not sure when Apple users became so utterly stupid to need a permanent reminder of where to swipe up.

Not a single good explanation.

Not only is it bizarre, but if this came from any other OEM, I have a feeling people like Rene Ritchie would be all over it calling it imbalanced and distracting and a bad design.

I'm just perplexed.

Apple really is going unapologetically asymmetrical.

No the worst was when Tim said that the iPhone X would be setting the direction for technology for the next 10 years. Seriously how can you set the pace when everything you have you've copied form other places.
What did they copy? Let’s start with the 5s and finger print reader. There is a difference between plagiarism and taking an idea and improving on it.

Could simply be that you have the option to expand / stretch the video to full screen like on the S8/G6 however we could also get option for black bars on sides for 16:9 ...

This might sound a bit insane but the side bezels on the X looked a little thicker than I was expecting.

Yeah they are definitely there, not truly edge to edge as marketed.

Yeah, I know what you both are saying. The side bezels are still somehow and oddly thick.

The Verge:

Multi-tasking gesture looks a little awkward.

Also, @jamezr, I believe you're right. You unlock with your face, but still have to swipe up to actually go to the home screen from the unlocked screen. I guess this is so you can read your notifications without accidentally unlocking it and going into your screen? Probably there will be a setting to toggle this to automatically enter to your home screen?

Yep, I imagine the same option is in settings to go directly to the homescreen once unlocked like there is for Touch ID since Apple introduced this on iOS 10.

Re gestures : it probably just takes a while to retrain yourself to the new scheme from years of doing something another way.

Well they were trying really hard to get into this year's model, I just don't see them giving up and never include it again. Plus you could see them playing up how much more secure touch id is when combined with face id.

If I didn't have my Apple Watch for Christmas I'd get a Note 8 now. I'm sorry, although I'll have to try the iPhone X, it just looks like one big design mess! That notch is an utter design disaster, and then they go and enhance that by making all the apps 'wrap around it'!!!
And I'm not so convinced by these gestures you have to use..

This is NOT the Apple I know.. and as for the sheer price gouging by dumping the 128GB option, well...

Hmm I want a good phone camera, will have to have a think what I do now, I was looking at the 7 Plus after the price drop but here in the U.K. They've only dropped it by £50!!! Wow, thanks Apple

The iPhone 8 is a joke in 2017. My 6S is better.

Sadly the Apple Watch with Cellular isn't going to be released here this year or anytime soon otherwise I may have been very tempted myself.
Don't worry, it just means we are the beta tester for your release.

I really think the watch is more of a game changer than the phone. While I really like some of what they did with the iPhone X (hello webOS), I just not going to spend over $1,100 to upgrade my iPhone 7 and then upgrade again next year. This will be more like a computer upgrade for me, once every 5 years or so and only when it has the features I want when upgrading from my previous model.

The watch OTH will change the way I do things. Many time I go through the quandary of deciding to take my phone with me and risk damaging it/losing it, or do I leave it in the car and not be connected. Now it's a no brainier, I can always leave my phone and still be able to get my SMS/iMessages, and phone calls. All in a slick water proof device with a sapphire screen.

To bring it all the way back to the original question of the thread—Do I plan to switch from iPhone to Android?

While I don’t plan on switching platforms (love my Apple Watch and iPP too much), I’m most definitely not getting a new iPhone this year, which will be a first. The 8 just isn’t worth the cost of an upgrade ($949 for the 256GB I’d need) and the X really has no appeal for me—none at all, admittedly somewhat to my surprise. Especially at that price.

So they got rid of the 128gb tier but offer 256gb for an extra $150?

Is that true for the iPhone X 256gb version? $999+150?

[doublepost=1505257916][/doublepost]I'm watching the super cut of the event from the Verge and Tim Cook and Apple all call the iPhone X "iPhone ten."

Wait, so what will they call next year's iPhone? iPhone 9?? Or something else entirely?

Yes surprisingly the Watch is more interesting to me. Unfortunately it's only available on one carrier in the U.K. Had it been available at my carrier I probably would have got one.

The flood illuminator literally lights up your face for Face ID in the dark? Or was that just a graphical demonstration?

They really are trying it with the prices in the U.K. Since Brexit. They even put up the price of the iPad Pro 10.5 inch by £50 tonight. For what reason, I don't know.

Yeah. The price for the 256GB version of the 8 Plus is the same as the 7 Plus so I’m not knocking Apple’s pricing there (well, other than it already being a touch high). I just don’t see enough of an improvement in features/functionality. Same goes with any value the X may offer over the Plus. I’m not obsessed with bezels, really like Touch ID and am not sold on the UI changes that come with the new design.

As an Apple Watch fan though, I’m quite intrigued with the LTE version of the watch.

Graphical demonstration

Amazing.

Face ID remains the most impressive thing about the iPhone X.

The screen has a debatable notch, wireless charging isn't new, and the design isn't anything better than what we've seen from other OEMs (namely Samsung and the LG V30), but Face ID is legit impressive.

The tech is impressive, but I'm cynical towards daily usage. They made it *more* cumbersome to use Apple Pay. It actually seems easier for a stranger to unlock your phone if they can get their hands on the device with you there. Police - they can handcuff you, hold the photo up to your face, boom - unlocked.

Keep your eyes closed?

I understand what you're saying, but consider the gains. The bezel-less design offers a better and more immersive screen experience. That's something you use of your smartphone more than Touch ID. Basically almost anytime you use your smartphone you're looking at your screen.
