Oh well, Apple could hurry up with the promised Finnish launch of Apple Pay so that I can see if my bank is supported. Even though the 256GB variants are annoyingly expensive, iPhones still get the longest software support and the price isn't that high when divided by supported years.

Demo video footage did seem to lack that "pop" factor of Samsung displays. It's hard to really tell with Youtube vids.
I just hope the brightness is up to snuff. For me my dream has always been an OLED iPhone and this is it. The moment of truth. FaceID kinda ruined it for me though.

I'm wagering Apple calibrated their OLED panel for 625 cd/m2 maximum brightness on purpose. That exactly matches the same brightness as the iPhone 7 and 7+. That can't be accidental.

Why would they artificially limit their OLED panel? It should be the best if it wants to compete with Samsung.

In S8/note8 you can adjust the RGB level to you liking. The question is can you do that in Iphone X.

On the S8, You can only adjust white point in adaptive mode, not the sRGB accurate basic mode which is the mode that actually needs the adjustment.

I doubt Apple will have any colour calibration sliders at all.

The 7+ can go up to over 700 Nits outdoors and the S8/S8+/Note 8 all ramp up brightness outdoors to a higher max Nits than their in interior max level.

Until we get a proper diagnosis rather than just an initial brief hands-on impression, whose observation could also be accounted for by such differing colour calibrations (S8 in side by side with another looks dimmer when in Basic mode compared to same device in Adaptive for example) we simply won't know.

I'm just saying what Apple's official tech specs are.

The iPhone X is 625 cd/m2. The 7 and 7+ are listed as the same, but they hit higher levels in high ambient light with auto brightness enabled.

Never once with the iPhone 7+ have I ever felt usability in direct sunlight was an issue. This in a USA state where over 2/3 of the year it is bright blue skies with barely a cloud in the sky. It doesn't have to match the peak brightness of my S8+ to be effective in this area, but it can't be a step backward from where iPhones currently are either.

I saw Displaymate review gave a very accurate color/white assessment for the "basic" and "cinema" mode? That should satisfied the purists. Personally I like the Adaptive mode better.

Knowing Apple, they had some longevity requirement, where degradation of the OLED panel at peak brightness wasn't a factor for some incredibly long duration of time.

Something that would be a concern considering Apple devices tend to stay in families and use for a very long time.

Same. Adaptive is the way to go. Other modes are too bland and warm for my tastes.

Oh and Markus Brownee said he didn't think the iPhone X display was as bright as the Note 8 one.... so outdoors it may be poor and it may not be as good at HDR?

Hmm I need to get some hands on, I may have to buy the X, but I may get a Note 8 next year too..
He gave a figure in his review, I think 600/700 nits for the Iphone X which came from Apple's website. The note 8 has 1200 nits. This came from display mates testing.

Wow so it’s not even close. So either Apple has artificially limited brightness or it’s a very old panel. I think it has to be the former. There’s no way it’s a crappy panel for $1200

Crappy might be an overstatement.

It might just be a panel from last year. Samsung does this to all companies it outsources to. Now, Apple might very well get an exception. But at the same time, Samsung is going to risk their title as "best phone display". A panel from last year, or earlier this year, is better than everythibg except the note 8.

In terms of Samsung OLED panels the oldest conceivable generation Apple could be using is from the Galaxy S6, which was QHD and peaked on auto at 784 cd/m2.

Apple's website usually rates their brightness lower than actual real world performance. Even the iPhone SE, rated at 500 nits on Apple's website hits 598 nits peak real world.

So if we make some calculated assumptions about the iPhone X based upon previous Apple products, we are looking at 700-725 nits peak brightness (Sunlight + auto brightness enabled).

Leading me to believe this was specification choice by design.

The tech is impressive, but I'm cynical towards daily usage. They made it *more* cumbersome to use Apple Pay. It actually seems easier for a stranger to unlock your phone if they can get their hands on the device with you there. Police - they can handcuff you, hold the photo up to your face, boom - unlocked.

One previewer noted he could unlock someone else's iPhone by pointing it at them!

A colleague of mine came up with an amusing point just now. Animated speaking emojis are quite cool if you're a teenager, but how many teenagers are going to spend a grand on a phone?

Could Apple not add this feature to other models?

Applecare+ prices will go up for the Plus models. And the iPhone X Applecare+ comes in at $199.

AppleCare+ prices jump with introduction of new iPhones
https://9to5mac.com/2017/09/12/applecare-price-jump-new-iphones/

What's the final price on the 256gb iPhone X with Applecare+? About $1350 before taxes? So, close to $1500-ish all said and done.
Impossible to justify yearly without selling off older iPhones. I could easily recoup around 500 selling off my 7 Plus and even then I end up paying what I used to pay for upgrades since 2013.

It would be kinda disappointing for me if it has an S6 oled. Really hope it isn't. I am already paying a premium almost equivalent to 2 S8 phones to stay in the Apple ecosystem. The only good hing I can say it's still better than the LCD iPhones which have gotten long in the tooth.

I have this to say about the notch:

As much as you hate the notch, you can't deny, it makes the iPhone X silhouette recognizable and easily identifiable as an Apple iPhone. I think that was part of their goal. And it's going to succeed. It will become iconic.

: slow clap :
I honestly don't think so. It'll be noticed, and remembered, and that signature silhouette will help it sell. But it won't be iconic.

Sadly the Apple Watch with Cellular isn't going to be released here this year or anytime soon otherwise I may have been very tempted myself.
Ugh thanks for reminding me, no AW3 in Sweden either this year. Starting to look more and more like the perfect time to go Android and S Pen for a while. And maybe return to iPhone + AW3 next fall.

We'll just sold my 7 Plus for €700 and got a cheque back from the Revenue for overpaid taxes last year, so that's my justification sorted.

Now to decide Silver or Black X

Only thing stopping me will be if Pixel XL 2 lives up to my hopes and actually releases here. If not I'll buy the X now and the V30 after Christmas and keep my current Pixel XL.

Tons of them I bet. If mom/dad don't get it for them, I'm sure even a low paying job can support $45/month for a kid living at home.

Some of you guys think the OLED panel in the iPhone X is a two year old panel from Samsung? I would be shocked if that were true. So that means, according to Apple's presentation, when they said "OLED technology has finally caught up to our personal standards" they're referring to two year old OLED tech? I doubt that.

But then again, if "brightness" was a standard before Apple could use OLED, and they're still maxing out at a lower Nit rating than current Samsung flagship displays, then who knows what game they're playing. More Apple marketing mumbo jumbo?
