Its looking more and more like the notch has a reason, its a symbol.

"Apple is turning a design quirk into the iPhone X’s defining feature"

https://www.theverge.com/2017/9/14/16306244/apple-iphone-x-design-notch

Yep, basically what I said pages ago:

As much as you hate the notch, you can't deny, it makes the iPhone X silhouette recognizable and easily identifiable as an Apple iPhone. I think that was part of their goal. And it's going to succeed. It will become iconic.

It's already working.

You know who has tiny bezels and no notch? Samsung Galaxy S8 and Note 8.
[doublepost=1505405955][/doublepost]

In fairness, Samsung at least goes edge to edge in one direction. The iPhone X just has a bezel on all sides.

Still a lie, but slightly less of a lie.

But that tiny top and bottom bezel is still enough to make the phones feel tall IMO. If you look at the S8 and S7 side by side, the S8 is clearly taller and feels so in hand. But remove those bezels and it's the same size as the S7. I don't think that was a coincidence, and if rumors are true next year Samsung phones will also have a notch in the name of removing those bezels. I think that's the right approach, I would rather have a more compact phone with notch than a larger handset and no notch. Of course one day we won't have to choose, as all those sensors and cameras will sit behind the display.

I stand corrected. That's dumb if that's how they are going to do it. Imagine if you have it set to automatically erase the iPhone?

I may have missed a post but this is how Touch ID works too. If you get fail attempts, it prompts you to use your pin code.

Yeah, but it's more deliberate when your trying to unlock with touch id. What if someone wants to see my phone, as they look at it, how quickly will face id register a failed attempt? What if i have it on the counter, I get a message and I tell my son to see who it is, how fast will face id block the message and show the pin? I could see this being a problem for some people, myself included.

I guess it'll depend how fast it's triggered after the first failed attempt. I hope they have a set up like Samsung does where you have to tap the face unlock icon after a failed attempt in order to get the device to try it again.

Yep. It's works just like touch ID does now but isn't this just a typical example how the forums are ... we just HAVE TO to have some big overblown drama that will be promptly forgotten about once device is shipping ...

But that’s not a new problem unique to Face ID. A child will just as quickly hammer away at the FP sensor and PIN code to lock you out of your phone.

Agreed. I predict most people obsessing over Face ID during the presentation are going to be blown away by that feature when the device is out. It was just either a pre-production issue or a presentation issue. I don't think it's an indication whatsoever of the abilities of Face ID.

Face ID remains the most impressive thing about the iPhone X. It's the only thing that comes close to leapfrogging the competition. And you better bet it'll deliver. Apple thinks it's good enough to eliminate Touch ID and leave a notch in the display for.

I think this will be like when Touch ID came out. It was leagues ahead of the competition. Took about 2 years for Samsung and others to get a similar FP scanner.

Sort of.

They really pioneered the finger print scanner because they were first to do it well in a mainstream device.

Whereas with Face ID, they're not first, but they are taking it to the next step. It leapfrogs the current competition, but I would argue that it probably won't be "leagues above" per se. The facial unlock on the s8, for example, works well. It's fast and reliable. Even the infamous photo bypass is nothing but bologna.

Face ID gives Samsung and the rest something to strive for in their next iteration.

Isn't Face ID just another implementation of the original Windows Hello face unlock with near-infrared depth perception for picture anti-spoofing? What differentiates Microsoft from Apple and Samsung is how loose or tight the fine tuning is and its affect on false positives and negatives. Samsung gives you a user selectable toggle between strict and loose. Apple needs further fine tuning since makeup seems to trigger false negatives but they're all pretty much fundamentally the same thing so no leapfrogging.

Other than mass consumer adoption, you have a point.

Almost though not the same. All they have to do is LOOK at your phone and it is a failed authentication attempt. They don't have to actually have it in their hands.
I am looking forward to trying Face ID. I;m just a little wary of some of the use cases.

I'll be pretty shocked if it's not similar to Sammy's set up in which you have to tap the face icon to try face unlock again after a failed attempt.

I was pretty set on the space grey iphone x but thinking more silver now that would go better with the stainless steel apple watch series 3

It would be nice to see both colours in person before buying, but little chance of doing that if you want to secure one by pre-ordering as I suspect shipping times and availability will be limited this year.

I'm going to go for silver myself although it looks more white than silver from the videos.

I would totally go for the silver iPhone X between the color choices. Don't like the camera design, but love the white glass back.

And if I were in the market for an iPhone 8, also the silver.

I think the iPhone 8 models are a terrific upgrade from the 7. It really is the best iteration of that generation's iPhone. The final form, if you will.

It's been perfected from years of refinement. It's fully sealed from dust and water, the home button isn't physical anymore, has stereo-speakers, beautiful sturdier glass-back making a return, offering more features like serious camera upgrades and wireless charging...

They're going to be fantastic all-around, capable smartphone options in the market.

I just can't get excited over 'another method' to unlock my phone. It's what I can do once I'm using my phone that I'm more interested in to be honest. If Face ID is the most impressive thing about the iPhone X, then it's not aimed at iPhone users like me perhaps. It's certainly a product designed to Class cleanse the wide demographics of people who buy iPhones each year.

That's true but i cant get past the fact it looks incredibly dated compared to the X and the competition.
