HEADS UP for people still on the hunt for a very decent screen:

Like member Stavros said, Week 27 (July) DMPs have do have a SUBSTANTIAL quality improvement, especially in the screen. Brightness uniformity stands out a lot. No dark borders. Yellow band barely imperceptible. Very light hue shifts too.

I've bought 2 units, same production week and both are good.

It is not _perfect_ but it is just miles beyond past ones. Believe me. It took me 13 ipads to finally settle, so I definitely know the ups and downs. Wish Apple had these from the start. It was painful to spend 2 months after an acceptable ipad but that's the way apparently.

Anyways, I'd say now is a good time to snipe that sucker for good and live happily ever after (until ipp 3, lol)

DLX seems to be better overall based on personal xp and people's comments. But it's not like you can choose the SN so it doesnt matter.

very good. congrats.

Are you kidding? This is one of the worst. The yellow tints are so obvious.

Well I decided to try again and am happy to say I found one that has no issues. No banding, book spine, splotchy-areas , color temp is just right and consistent over the entire screen.

And I'm picky.

Serial is DMPT. Purchased today at local Target. Compared it to my 2017 non-pro that I considered a very good consistent display and the Pro 10.5 is definitely better... So, they are out there. I feel lucky to have found one after only the second purchase.

I know this is unrelated, but since many in this thread have seen so many new iPads, I thought it might be best to ask here.

Has anyone noticed any small spot marks (like dried oils) on their screen when opening the iPad for the first time? There were two small marks on the iPad I just picked up. They appeared to go away with water and a microfiber cloth, but they were concerning at first sight as the iPad was sealed and I opened it in-store. They offered to let me exchange it (after talking to a manager, who claimed to see nothing), but I decided not to as I had already exchanged for another issue. Apple employees claimed it may just be from the packaging. Just seems odd that they must see tons of new iPad and provided little insight.

I am hoping it is normal and nothing to be concerned about.

If there is no damage I'd keep it. I've opened a few with glue etc and there are sometimes things on the screen you just have to rub off and then you're fine. I had some stuff, likely sticky adhesive on the back if my iPad that I had to really rub off on the metal before it disappeared. But in looking st it you might have thought it was a blemish.

I think it is gone. I will look at it under good light, today. Just expected a perfectly clean glass (minus the normal dust and such) when first opened.

I've seen many with fingerprints, scratches, glue, nicks, etc. you name it.

Yep, seen several apple watches with scratches on the screen out of the box. iPhone was also this way but the my were next to invisible and the screen wasn't defective. So it's not worth the risk.

Basically Tim Cook's Apple is one of numbers and inventory control, not quality control.

The yellow tint goes away with different angles. I believe it must be something to do with the anti reflective coating and the new screen.. it's too subtle. I'll keep it.

I think your screen looks good. It is very hard to evaluate a screen from a photograph. Mine has a yellow tint on the bottom that is so slight sometimes I'm not sure I even see it, but photos of it make it look worse.

On #5 and barring some other yet unseen issue the screen is probably the best yet, no dead pixels, uniform color, slight bit of darkness near the home button but not yellow at all. No backlight bleed either, every model in the store had some type of display issue and I visited two different Apple Stores and they are all roughly the same. Some units are just worse than others but I have yet to see a perfect screen in person or posted on this thread. Serial is a DMP week 27, if I hadn't sold my 9.7 I would wait a month or two until more of the early production units are gone.

Does this yellow banding affect 12.9 ipad? I just received my ipad but haven't opened it yet. Do 10.5 and 12.9 have drastically different serial numbers?

How does mine look? There aren't any dead pixels or dust.

Let me know your thoughts.

Just went to Apple Store to pick up the replaced iPad and OMG the screen is worse... color band with darker edges and ... all sorts of crap. Rejected the replacement and I think will settle down on my current one with moderate color temperature uniformity issue.

Would appreciate the thoughts of the forum on whether there is a yellow band. Sometimes I think I see it, sometimes I think it's just the backlighting. I'm partly convinced the homebutton side shows it a faint amount, but sometimes I can't tell. Here is my 10.5 with TT off, max brightness.

One side is definitely darker than the other. I do believe they are all like this, some less so than others and most just don't notice it. On iPad #6 now and it too has a darker tint to the home button side.

In your landscape pic the screen is darker on the right. Every iPad shown in this thread has the problem to some degree.

Stare at something long enough and you'll find problems

Yep and Apple seems to forget the iPad is all about staring at the screen. The only thing they really needed to pay the most attention to really. It is one big screen and theyve manage to allow flaws like that. Disrespectful.

Thanks for taking a look. I think it's darker due to where the camera was centered. Possibly from drop off on an LCD. I'm wondering if the "yellow band" is present?

Had one with a pretty good screeen until the bottom volume button decided to give up the ghost. Truly shoddy parts.

There's some freaking problem with Apple production or their LCD manufacture. I had my ipad exchange 5 times in July (yellow ban, dead pixels, dust under the screen) until I was so pissed I canceled the whole order and decided to wait 1 month later and order again.

So 1 month later which is yesterday I decided to place an order thinking all the first batch should be sold and I'll have problems free ipad. I was so excited when it arrive and I rush open to check. External everything looks perfectly until when I power on and notice 2 dead pixels....

My serial number start with DLX.

What in the world is wrong with Apple.... why is their QC dropping...

Have been trying for over a year to get a good iPad - returned dozens. They just don't give a ****. Disgusting, though, for "pro" devices. Don't get me started on the 12.9 inch and the fact that they creak and click and make all kinds of noises with regular use. I guess other users just don't care or are oblivious.

Did you also have the yellow band?
