That’s what I was thinking about…consistent PWM brightness stops this workaround option.
I wondered if pulsation modulation would be the same across all levels too, and you’re confirming this
The range of pulsation isn’t nearly as broad as some users have measured with a Radex. Although it’s still not perfectly consistent.

An improved display engine is preferable to a setting in Accessibility but it may still be necessary for the flicker coefficient to be under 1% for the most sensitive users such as myself to be able to use an OLED iPhone without issues.

Its definitely worth giving it a try this year for anybody who’s sensitive since Apple made the most changes to the brightness controller that they’ve made to date. Our observation from the keynote was correct that that’s what the new display engine was in reference to.

Surprisingly iPhone 13 may be an even better bet than the Pro model since it flickers at 60Hz with what appears to be a DC dimming-type of setup.

What’s odd is that Notebookcheck still measures the colors to be significantly better on the standard 13 as opposed to the 13 Pro. I thought that was an anomaly due to panel variance that they found the same to be true on the 12 and 12 Pro.

This may be enough for me to give the iPhone 13 Mini a try if not for science to compare/contrast the 60Hz quasi-DC dimming to the higher-frequency flickering on the iPhone 13 Pro.
I may be way off base here, but I sort of attributed my easy transition to the 12 mini last year to the fact that it's a smaller screen- I am looking at a much smaller strobing area than I would have been on a 6 or 6.5" screen.

With that in mind, along with the improvements made, maybe the 13 Mini will work for you!

We haven't seen Notebookcheck's review of the mini, though- I suppose it's possible they are using a completely different display in it, that has much worse PWM than the regular 13?

Did NotebookCheck revise their statement about PWM only being used on iPhone 13 when the brightness was 10% or lower?

Sounds like it's always ~600 Hz regardless of brightness. Knew it was too good to be true.

Hmm, I was just reading this earlier today and the comment about PWM being used on <=10% brightness was there, but as you said, it's gone now. If this means it's 610Hz across the board, what are the two separate measurements in the associated screenshots- clearly there is a different frequency/amplitude outlined in the 2nd one from what you see in the first one. They didn't really explain what these are- was one 100% brightness and the other was something under 10%?

But with that being said, if it is ~600 Hz brightness across the board- their comment says that should be high enough for even those who are sensitive not to be affected. I suppose it's true that this is nearly three times as high of a frequency as we saw on the 12/12 Mini- so in theory, those who were mildly sensitive on the 12 series would be OK this time around?

The wording on the 13 Pro, on the other hand, is really interesting- boldly claiming that DC dimming is in fact implemented:

But then it says the following, which seems to state there is flickering at all brightness levels:

isnt 600 hz good?

It seems a little more clear that this is a bad article?

boe is supplyinh iphone 13 so i asm assuming that maybe better for the eyes
But it seems only to 20-40%. The question is if the other chunk comes from Samsung Display or maybe LG.

I have try the iphone 13 yesterday in store and for around 15 min i doesn't seems to bother my eyes. Hmm i don't know if i should try the iphone 13 or 13 Pro after i had no luck with the 13 Pro Max. I'm waiting for the 13 pro max review to see if notebookcheck measures any differences on PWM behavior compared to the 13 pro. Last year there were also differences on the pro models.

When I went to Apple store to look for an iPhone 13 pro max (no luck) to purchase and test I had the feeling that iPhone 13’s display would e easier on my eyes…I’m not sure as i was using mostly Pro test devices, but that was the feeling.
I’m not sure if I would downgrade to iPhone 13 (I’d lose 120hz, multiple lenses), but if it’s ok for PWM it could be interesting

Did you look at the 13 Mini as well- did that seem OK on your eyes, too? Not that you were looking for a Mini, but just curious to understand if the Mini and the regular 13 might indeed have similar displays.

Interesting that you had issues with the Pro Max, since the assumption would be that the Pro Max would have the same screen as the Pro,which looks like it'll be fine for most of us according to Notebookcheck.

I've been testing the XS all day today with true tone. I find that true tone seems to help me alot..I hadn't really used it before. Just now I switched it off and the screen looked very bright and blue, it was almost jarring lol. But I would guess most people would prefer the blue look vs true tone's warmer look.

I haven't felt much discomfort so
far..I'll stick with it for a few days and then switch back to the 11 and go from there.

What does this mean

‘the lowest brightness setting, the display exhibits a flickering that is indicative of PWM being used to regulate the display's brightness. However, just slightly increasing the brightness makes the flickering disappear.’

So seen as the pro 13 cause eye strain and have lower pwm 400

after notebook check it seems like the iphone 13 has higher pwm so i just bought it ill let you guys know how it went

The pro is 510Hz, so not much lower than the 13.

Interestingly, though- I went to the Apple store tonight and did slow mo video of the pro and the regular 13. Regular 13 had the strobing you’d expect to see with pwm, and the pro had absolutely none- no flicker, no bars moving up the screen.

That notebookcheck review is strange - 13 flickers as hell no matter the brightness (see ano slow mo video)… and inpersonally felt wuite ok with pro but with regular 13 i felt nause just after few minutes of usage…

but apparently the modulation or something else is higher someone mentioned here even though the pwm is higher there us something else on the pro display giving headaches

illgive the 13 a try anyway

Second time at apple store to see what I could see.

I had a weird warm feeling in my head while there for 10-15 minutes. And then I had a slight headache for five minutes after driving away. And I never get headaches. So strange. :/

maybe the 13 is okay? I didn’t have the searing eye pain that I had with the 12 mini, but I got a headache. 🤷‍♂️

And to be fair, I also had a very strange warm feeling sensation when I first got the 11… like “why is my head warm like I’m getting baked in a microwave?”

never had any issues with the 7 on down to the 5c.

Well... I'm gonna be a bit of a hypocrite and I'm also going to try out the 13 again. I didn't really give it a proper go previously and sent it back along with the 13 Pro Max, the one that was definitely destroying my eyes.

I previously had no noticeable issues with the 12 Pro (and 11 Pro Max), so I'm hoping the standard 13 with its (supposed) 610Hz PWM and fixed refresh rate will be okay for me. One came up as available at Covent Garden, 256GB, so I went for it on an impulse.

I just love that pink and I would like to enjoy the OLED (without pain), cameras and battery life. It's also a bit smaller and lighter than the 11, too.

I intend to give it a good go and will certainly report back on my experience with the display!

I think one thing that's been muddying my personal experience with these phones is that I've been fighting a super persistent cold for weeks. My eyes feel a lot more sensitive and sore when I'm sick, so it might be exaggerating my symptoms somewhat. Only the 13 Pro Max for sure has quickly and noticeably caused eye trouble for me.

Btw, iphone 13 canera, is it same as one used in 12 pro max? And sensor? I mean, would iphone 13 camera noticeable better than iphone 11 one? Only thing that i want to upgrade from trusty 11 is better camera, i do make ton of pictures if children, so camera is priority hear.. second to health safety ;)

The available info is a bit confusing, but I think the 13 has the same main and ultra-wide cameras as the 12 Pro Max, yeah.

Hope that works out for you! i am going to do the exact same, have already ordered the 13 128 in black but have to wait until 28/10 :)
