Hey guys, i'm trying to figure out why i'm having slight nausea affect with macbook pro 16 m1 and also with apple studio display, but not with my old macbook pro 15 2018.
As i understand they both have LED displays. But i think with the latest displays they are using mini-LED panels. So weird. its not even OLED display and still having this problems with eye strain, nausea and slight vertigo sometimes. Maybe someone could explain something with some specific technologies that they started to use or so, i'm confused.

Set up my Dad's new iPhone SE 2022 (which I am giving him for Christmas, taking the opportunity to have a little playtime) last night. Nice to hold a smaller phone after 5 years of a Plus iPhone and I was impressed by the screen's colours, contrast and smoothness when compared to my 7 Plus. But after an hour of fiddling, I felt like the lower part of my eyes were a little sore - stingy a little. This feeling was similar to the early response to the standard 14 - this is not good. So if the SE 2022 has no PWM.........??

This is beyond ridiculous now, what the hell is Apple doing?! 😞

Oh dear, sorry to hear this, seems like even the 11 and SE models without OLED are no longer a sure thing, my 6s, 8 and 8 Plus all seem to be OK on latest iOS release if that helps anyone else. It is a bad day if even the SE is causing problems though, looks like temporal dithering issue? Keep on passing feedback to Apple.

I kick myself everyday for not getting an 8 Plus when it was available new - that would likely have seen me through to SE 2024. That said, with the 11 and SE 2022 irritating my eyes I have zero hope that I will be comfortable with the next SE. I'm raging but cannot be bothered to communicate with Apple anymore - they don't care and won't make changes for me/us. For me, its been over 5 years of issues with these displays and nothing has changed, infact its spread to more devices - boxing me out of upgrade paths across the board!

If you are in the UK then keep an eye out as technically some new old stock 8 Plus models could still come onto the market. I managed to pickup a new 256GB 8 Plus earlier this year but they were rare then. I will probably battle on with the 11 Pro and some choice screen settings, if that fails it will be the 8 Plus or maybe an 11 to try.

I understand how you feel about contacting Apple, but if Mr Cook keeps getting emails and enough of them, something might have to give at some stage. Imagine if the 620 people who voted that they suffer with PWM emailed Tim Cook once a month for a year, that would be 7440 annoying emails which someone would have to filter through! even twice a year would be 1200+ about the same subject, that isn't so easy to ignore. Squeaky wheel gets the oil as the old saying goes :D just might have to make this wheel squeak pretty loud!

I’ll bet it’s just the result of staring at the lower resolution 326 ppi screen on the SE vs the higher res 401ppi on your 7 Plus.
326ppi is pretty sharp, but not perfectly sharp. It’s blurry enough on text edges to make the eyes constantly hunt for focus.

I have both a 8 and 8 Plus and after a while, the regular 8 starts bugging my eyes too.

mmmm - this was what I was worried about if switching full-time to SE 2022. Might just dig deep into finding a new 8 Plus as my last resort.

Hopefully between eBay and maybe other suppliers you can find an 8 Plus, suspect finding 64GB models might be easier than 128 and 256. Hope you can track one down, I notice a couple on eBay but the shrink wrap looks a bit non-original somehow

I know I said it before, but I am done with Apple OLED screens. 14 is going back on Monday.
I want this thing out of my life, and I almost have malice towards it :)

Things were going okay and then I switched back to the 11 for a few days. When I again used the 14 the effect was immediate and bad. It almost reminded me of the iPhone X.
There is no getting used to these screens for me.

One of the reasons I switched to the 11 for a few days was I was literally tired of looking at the OLED screen.
Totally fatigued. I did not expect to have such a reaction when I picked the 14 back up though.

We will see about the 15 series or mythical SE4, but I will not hold my breath.

Good luck to the rest of you trying out the phones.

Any updates on the iPhone 14 Plus @pwm away ?

@dstow I've been using it in combination with my old 11 so far; not exclusively yet ... I've spent most of the time assessing different brightness and RWP combinations

At the moment I can say:

  • Brightness of ~92% has the lowest flicker % (~5%)
  • Brightness down to ~72% increases the flicker % steadily to ~10%
  • RWP of up to 62% doesn't significantly increase the flicker %; RWP in the lower range (~30%) very slightly decreases flicker %
  • True Tone annoys me, especially when it's later/darker; I don't remember True Tone annoying me on the 11, or any previous LED iPhones, but in the case of the 14 Plus, I prefer it turned off
The downside of the brightness/RWP play is that it is nonetheless still bright (at least to me), which becomes annoying later at evening/night time; it still feels a bit too bright. Because of this, I've been playing around the last few days with simply having it on auto-brightness without RWP.

Overall, I haven't had significant issues with it (at least, not noticeable); however, I did start testing this at an unfortunate time (a period of regular headaches, migraines, and eye discomfort), so it's currently a bit difficult to measure the effect exactly. Recovery from these symptoms is taking a bit longer than usual, which may in itself be an indication that it affects me (or may just be pot luck).

On a more general note, these iPhone OLED screens seem very bright to me, most of the time, even with auto-brightness on. It may very well even be the increased intensity of OLED lights that's causing us issues, rather than PWM (or a combination of either).

On a more general note, I've just updated my old 11 to 16.1.2, and it does not seem to have impacted the flicker % ... it is still hovering at ~<0.75%.

On a separate note, I've seen a review out there that tested the flicker % on the Nothing Phone (1), and it seems to be the best of the bunch ... ~3% at full brightness, and not going above 10% in dimmer brightness ... in case anyone would like to give that one a try (I've been tempted, but moving to Android seems unforgivable).

Same here. I’ve tried a few iPhone SE 2022’s and I cannot use them but I’m fine with my iPhone SE 2020. It must be temporal dithering.

Which one gave you the most nausea/head pain and which one the most blurry vision/tired eyes

I would say the iPhone 14 Pro caused the most nausea and headaches followed by the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus caused the least amount of symptoms. Mainly eye strain/tired eyes with the iPhone 14 Plus being the most tolerable of the two.

Does that mean you kept the 14 Plus? Or was it in the “it’s the most tolerable but still unusable” category?

Ever try the 13 mini?

Got bored with my 11 so decided to try a 13 mini. Instant headache after 2 min setting up. Set brightness up, RWP, Increase Contrast etc. Used for 4 days hoping it would dissipate. It didn’t so returned for a 14 (non pro). Same thing used for a couple days and gets worse watching videos/YouTube.

Won’t try the pro as its month long waits and don’t want to be disappointed again. Another year with the 11 then.

I would like to stay on apple as i have the watch and the OS is just better, but has anyone tried Samsung or Google offerings?

I'd be all over Samsungs offerings but they make the screens that are in the iPhone so expect the same, if not worse, PWM around the 240hz mark. The Samsung threads are littered with people complaining about eye strain and headaches, just like this thread. Google phones are no better from what I've read. All current OLED in phones are bad for us sensitive folk 😩

That is sad news, seems like we can't win for trying, I always thought Samsung AMOLED were a safer bet but I am out of touch with that side. I encourage others to email Apple/Mr Cook explaining they cannot buy a new OLED iPhone due to this problem, it only takes a few minutes and cannot hurt.
