Is there any reason to think PWM won't be used in microLED?
I’m sure it’ll use PWM. If Apple doesn’t care about the negative effects of PWM now, they won’t want to lose any meager additional energy efficiency gains by using PWM in the future.

I’m so tired of this topic. It makes me think about a life without a smart phone altogether. Would it really be that bad? Seems like it’s maybe a better life and this is a blessing in disguise… not being tethered to a cell phone all day.

Same. A dumb flip phone would be fine.

What I think would be great is an e-ink screen phone. Longer battery life with no eye strain issues, but this would go against the phone-as-tv entertainment device mantra device makers and telecoms push.

Apple seems to think of itself as more an entertainment company than anything else these days, producing devices to consume and produce entertainment as well as selling content. I have the iCloud+ $0.99 a month plan for extra cloud space, and Apple’s billing category for this is labeled entertainment. All of the stupid fluff attached to the operating systems seem to be there only to entertain the user, not to help them do a job better. The Mac Pro no longer uses ECC memory, which has little use in entertainment.

I have contemplated "The Light Phone II" many times. It's e-ink and looks great. My problem is that my job requires apps that run on iOS/Android.

I wonder what Steve Jobs would think of this if people couldn’t use their IPhone because it hurt their eyes?

Maybe he’d be like the current Apple who isn’t even addressing this or maybe he would actually do something about it. Just crazy times in technology land

It's also funny (in a somewhat twisted sense) when you think this is the same company that has introduced a feature in iOS 17 to alert you if you're holding your phone too close to your face because "they're concerned about your eye health".

I have been thinking about this... just out of curiosity, has there ever been a feature from an upcoming version of iOS that was hidden until final release because it was a spoiler of some kind? For example, can we be sure that Apple won't include some kind of eye health settings that affect PWM in the 15 series based on iOS 17 betas?

BTW, it looks like Apple is no longer selling refurbished iPhone 11s. Usually, all the models Apple sells appear in the filter menu. If they are out of stock, the filter option is grayed out. That was often the case with the 11. Now it's just gone.

I noticed this as well. Gazelle is still selling used 11s, however.

iPhone 6S was the last good-Display iPhone. Everything since has been downhill.
“Wide Color” P3 LCD iPhones use temporal dithering (iPhone 7 and up) which is another form of pixel flashing but not as problematic for most.

There’s no escaping the flickering. Either it bugs you or not. It’s like an allergy. Don’t eat peanut butter if you’re allergic to peanuts.

This is one promising review and finally of a phone I can get here in the states. I’m going to give it a shot. My iPhone 11 is long in the tooth and the 15 (imo) won’t be any better on the eyes.
Imteresting. It is still OLED but uses DC dimming above 50% brightness, sounds promising. Maybe eventually Apple will do something like this.

Fingers crossed. I also wanted to give this a go but it’s not available in the UK.

In a number of reviews I read that the Edge 40 Pro is essentially the global equivalent of this model, bar some software changes.

On a more general note, the Motorola OLED phones seem to be getting good PWM feedback, and I've read a few reports from sensitive people that they can use them, especially the Edge 30 Fusion.

Interesting: https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=12127&idPhone2=12251

The battery is a slightly different capacity otherwise, it looks like you are right. Thanks for the info.

Digital River runs the UK site fulfilment for Motorola which means any returns have to be paid and handled by the customer, not keen on that if I have to go that route. Might consider buying from Amazon.
