Hard to believe after nearly 6 years 38% of people on here have this problem, have never come across 1 person in real life myself.
I only know 1 person in real life who knows about this issue, the rest have no problems with their oled screens or are not aware if it causes them any discomfort, as it doesn't seriously harm their health. I have rarely had conversations with people about whether they are bothered by a screen, but if you talk about PWM, migraines, or things like that, people look at you like you speak another language 😂.

I have, but it isn't that common of a thing to come up in discussion. There also seems to be a lot of people who don't get migraines, brain fog, bad eye pain, etc but they just get tired or irritated eyes looking at their oled phones but didn't when they had older LCD phones. It's blamed on "screen time", whatever that is.

So it is pain free even with pro motion enabled ? So your main feature you enabled was reduce white point.

Oh I know a couple of people. I told them about pwm and one believes me but says he doesn't care. He's a total iPhone fanatic. For all I know he's on this forum! And another just looked at me like I told her Sasquatch lives in my backyard and stops by for tea every first Sunday of the month. These are people who get such painful migraines they need to take something and lie down if they're on their phones too long.

Even I don't suffer like that most of the time, though the last few weeks on my 14 Pro Max I was starting to.

I spoke about this with one of the decent fellows at my local Authorized Apple Reseller and he had no idea what I was talking about. I say decent because when we discussed the Apple Watch 3 scam (the fact it was still being sold until recently) he said that whenever anyone showed interest due to it being the lowest cost watch, he steered them away from it.

I apologize if this has been mentioned before, but Walmart has a Straight Talk iPhone SE (3rd Gen) deal for $149 right now.

They also have the iPhone 11 for $249.

Both are brand new, in-box phones. Activate with Straight Talk for one month of service and then wait 61 days--they will automatically unlock it and then it can be used with other carriers.

Kind of a neat trick to get PWM-free phones.

Wanna take bets on the iPad Pro?

I had completely ruled out the 12.9” iPad Pro with Mini-LED display, then started watching reviews and the quality is night-and-day compared to the LCD of the 11” iPad Pro.

The only reason I would consider it is that the PWM rate is over 19,000Hz and the flicker amplitude is consistently under .5%, both of which are superior to the Mini LED display on the MacBook Pro which is ~ 14,000Hz and over .75% respectively.

I might have to make another visit to an Apple Store to decide, but I am open to trying an iPad to replace my M1 Pro MacBook Pro. If the 12.9” creates an issue, then it would be either an 11” iPad Pro M2 or a 15” MacBook Air.

Edit: apparently the latest iPad Pro 12.9” PWM is 6000Hz? At least the color accuracy on the M2 iPad Pro matches much more closely between the 11” and the 12.9”…

This is where I think Steve Jobs must be spinning in his grave...there are so many iPads from different chip generations and size and display configurations actively being sold that even I, a dedicated Apple products forum member, can't keep track of them all!

There's a lot of product for any given product line out at any given time, period. And the naming conventions are getting unwieldy. I'm in awe that you can keep track of not just their names, but pwm stats like that.

I can just manage to keep track of iPhones and the laptops. I am so lost when it comes to iPads it's not even funny! I have a very old iPad of some kind my husband handed down to me a few years ago. I think it's an iPad pro of some kind. I used it extensively for one art project I was working on, then one of the kids broke their Apple Pencil and needed mine for school. I could never bring myself to spend the money another Apple Pencil for myself and that was that. I stuck it in my gadget bag and haven't used it in about 3 years. I still think of it as "my new big iPad." 😆

You guys in the US certainly get some great deals. Here in Northern Europe a new iPhone SE 3rd Gen costs the equivalent of USD 604 (it includes our 24% VAT). Carriers do not offer deals tied to their service. One reason being that contracts were outlawed a few years ago. All phones are sold unlocked.

I felt ok with the 11 inch M1 iPad Pro in the store and the 2018 11 inch Pro also (a family member has one). I haven’t tried the M2 or any of the 12.9 inch. I also did ok with the 8th gen regular iPad. Weirdly the iPad Air seems to bother me.

How would PWM even work on a mini-led display? Do they modulate the flicker on the backlight of each local zone individually to create the local dimming effect? So weird to even think about if that indeed is the case.

Yep, it's a mess with iPads right now. My kids both have iPads and while the other one is the Air 3, I can't bring myself to remember what the other one is called thanks to the "simple" (read: unnecessarily ambiguous) naming where it's just an iPad with whatever modifiers. And I'm someone who should be able to tell it straight away if woken up at 3 o'clock in the morning. Especially when they released an iPad where the only Apple Pencil compatible with it couldn't be charged without a dongle, they could've powered half of the Apple Park with a high-power turbine formerly known as Steve's grave.

I am always suspect of companies who do not have the guts or pride to put the name and model of the product on the product.

A little fly in the ointment - do you see jelly scroll? Considering the iPP12.9 has 120hz refresh rate, jelly scroll is very noticeable. I’d almost be prepared to put up with it for the clean whites and brightness of the 12.9 but it’s still a no go for me re: eye strain.

Best of luck. 🤞

Here’s my experience with he following:
2018 12.9
2020 11
M2 12.9
M2 11

Of the above, I had minor symptoms with the M2 12.9. Not nearly as bad as any of the OLED iPhones. Yes, the screen quality is better than the LCD, but it’s not a major difference (to me at least). The most noticeable differences with the mini-LED to me is that it is brighter and the colors on HDR movies is nicer. This is based on side-by-side comparisons I did between the 12.9 and the 11 in the store. Without that side-by-side comparison, the difference is not as noticeable. YMMV.

The biggest complaint with the mini-LED is the “blooming.” Blooming is a show-stopper for some, and for others, not a big deal/barely noticeable. I only noticed it with more extreme white on a black background, and even then, it wasn’t a big deal (to me). I think this is like the iPad mini jelly scroll. Some see it, some don’t, some are appalled, some don’t care.

I returned the M2 12.9 for the M2 11. This was mostly because of the screen size. 11 inches is the sweet spot for me. The minor symptoms I was having with the 12.9 was a factor, too, but not the primary one. If I had preferred the 12.9 size I may have been able to live with it.

The iPad LCDs have never given me any issues and I use my iPad extensively (I don’t own a Mac anymore). Transitioning from the 2020 11 to the M2 11 was seamless. Screenwise, I didn’t notice a difference. I’m not sure there is much, if any, difference between the screens of any year of the iPad Pro 11’s.

You can already pre-order the Fairphone 5 (https://shop.fairphone.com/fairphone-5), which, although it is not a high-end phone does not look bad, it is modular, and these phones last for many many years. The problem, OLED screen, as we have already commented here many times, and more in the case of a modular mobile in which they sell the components separately, it would be great if they sold an IPS screen that is good for the eyes, and you can easily install it yourself at home.

I’ve been wanting to try a Fairphone before and that one looks especially nice but I’m in the US. Lots of other people here can try it though. It looks like Europe and the UK are in the service regions.

I have just sent Fairphone a message asking how much it weighs. Strange that in the spec sheets they seem to omit this key detail.
