I’m kind of curious to see how iPhones evolve. I think we’re beginning to reach maturity with this current design, and increasing display sizes will only serve to make the prospect of folding devices more palatable and desirable. After all, there’s only so much larger that iPhones can become. I’m especially curious how iPhones will continue to evolve once they accomplish an all-display design. The performance of a gaming console/supercomputer, cameras rivaling professional DSLR’s and film cameras, the power of the sun in our pockets, and its display will still continue to flicker?

I think we’ll see a folding iPhone and possibly an Apple Magic Controller one day. I just hope we don’t get to iPhone 20 and still have to deal with flickering displays that are well below flicker-free certification standards.

I’ll be more okay than usual if iPhone 15 Plus doesn’t work out, which is how it seems to be going. I’m using it currently with Auto-Brightness on and Reduce White Point at 75%, and the display isn’t super satisfying but it’s better than shining a flashlight in my eyes by keeping the brightness up to make it usable. Looking at the current lineup I do think my initial purchase of iPhone 15 Pro was probably ideal, but its display is even more headache-inducing. At least thus far iPhone 15 Plus hasn’t caused notable throbbing-behind-the-eye headaches, but it’s still far from being comfortable and headache-free—which should be a necessity for a device that gets used so often throughout the day.

Nonetheless, that is progress even if it’s been gradual at best and it feels like it would take more than six generations to become usable again at this rate. Almost better or slightly better isn’t really acceptable: OLED needs to become as comfortable as a “flicker-free” LCD, which is the bottom line that we could continue reiterating for the next decade. Hopefully that isn’t the case, as Apple has all the resources in the world to figure this out.

iPhone enthusiasm can only last for so long. I suspect that by the time iPhone gets a healthy-to-look-at display, possibly a decade from now, none of us on this thread will really care. So what. By then we’ll have embraced other hobbies and interests and ‘iPhone technology’ likely won’t even register on our radar.
I for one have traveled pretty far down the ‘who cares about iPhones’ road already. I’m using a 6S Plus and have zero interest in getting something newer.

That is true. I feel significantly less attached to this iPhone 15 Plus than I did iPhone 12 Pro Max, or iPhone X for that matter. If iPhone displays continue being flickering disasters then we’ll move on to healthier hobbies, which is a bit of a plus in that sense.

Funnily enough there isn’t much I could do on iPhone 15 Plus that I can’t do on the latest iPhone SE with acceptable quality. I don’t necessarily need to be able to watch movies in Dolby Cinema quality on my iPhone, and games are admittedly underwhelming. It helps that the 11” iPad Pro has an excellent LCD display that’s a joy to look at. I’ll move on soon enough even if it isn’t resolved, hopefully. A solution may not realistically come until MicroLED.

People on Reddit are buying Xiaomi 13. The only reason for choosing this expensive Chinese phone is that it has the most comfortable AMOLED screen. It's really strange to watch this communist device take over market share and Apple doesn't seem to care about it.

Apple are aware. There is no way they are not. I just don't think they can address it the way we want/need due to the design and technology road they are traveling. Nor can they tackle it head on without it showing that there maybe an issue or health concern with flickering displays.

Bright colours, high nits of brightness and battery life is the space these manafactuers are choosing to exist.

The iPhone 13/Pro/Pro Max was the best for the eyes of all iPhones with OLED, and its battery life was also better than the iPhone 14/Pro/Pro Max. Xiaomi 13T has really poor battery life, but it has a MediaTek processor.
As for display colors, iPhones have normal ones. Samsung's colors are truly acid, I put a matte protective film on the S23 Ultra display to mute the colors.

I see normal xiaomi 13, 13t and 13t pro ? Those Chinese manufacturers are the worst.
They're not as bad as you think. For example, Xiaomi 13 without the T prefix has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. This is an excellent chip, it is also installed in the Samsung S23 Ultra. But Chinese phones have built-in apps with ads that can't be removed, and that's really annoying.

No. The Xiaomi 13 uses a E6 OLED-Display from Samsung Display with a DC Dimming option in the display settings. The Xiaomi 13T/Pro uses a panel from TLC with a PWM frequency of 2880 Hz on lower brightness and dc-like dimming on higher brightness. Experiences for both are mixed.

Here again an intermediate score from me:
I still have no problems with my iPhone 15 Pro Max.
It works for me, with 120Hz and default settings.
Love that it’s working out for you! The 15 PM was by far the easiest on my eyes of the four. I just received another 15 PM an half hour ago after taking November off to allow a full reset. This is it. If it goes back I’m on the 11 long term.

The Fairphone 5 sounds interesting. I am wondering how much of a difference the "DC dimming" manufacturers are implementing really changes TLM. According to NotebookCheck, it doesn't affect the Fairphone 5 at all. Which they interpret as it must always be on, whether you turn it on or not...

I like reading all you guys stories. I just gave up after the 13 versions.

However every year when the new iPhones come. My curiosity gets the best of me and I am searching reading for hours and hours to no satisfactory story. I go to an Apple store to check it out myself to be disappointed yet again. I just gave up buying and testing. The iPhone SE 3rd gen is great but the battery is terrible. Currently I am on the iPhone 11 forever.

I found a review back from august when it came out that said it uses a totally flicker free traditional LCD under the hardware filters and coatings.
I just found people on Reddit (PWM_Sensitive) saying it uses PWM at 20K to 40K Hz; however, I’m not sure how valid that is. People measuring with Opples will see numbers like that on totally PWM free displays.

Absolutely. I did extensive testing on an iPhone XR, 13PM and iPad 9 using an OPPLE IV and it was all over the place. The frequency was between 60 and 40,000 with no changes in position or brightness on the LCD displays.

The OLED was MUCH more consistent.

Hello 👋, is it worth to change my iPhone 14 PM to IPhone 13 PM? Many people says in IPhone 13 PM PWM is lighter then IPhone 14 PM
