It's a bit too easy to blame Google. The Note 4 lollipop update made my note 4 noticeably less efficient; even my Galaxy Alpha which ran at around 800mb system on KitKat jumped upto 1.3-1.4gb system on Lollipop, resulting in app refreshes and lag that were simply never there on KitKat.

Whilst it would be easy to blame Lollipop, the reality is other manufacturers have managed to embrace lollipop without such issues.

LG, HTC, Sony, Motorola devices haven't had such noticeable issues since pushing out lollipop as much as Samsung, likewise they haven't seen such massive system ram usage increase either. Now of course I'm not saying they haven't had some bugs / but nothing quite as impactful as on Samsung devices.

Samsung devices across the board are suffering noticeable poorer battery and standby ram increase across all of their devices I have had and used with it. (Note 4, Alpha, S6 Edge owned and S5, A5 used since lollipop). So there is definitely something not right with their touchwiz build on lollipop across the board.

Even the S6 with 'less bloat' uses more system ram standing still than other Samsung devices - especially under Kit Kat.

------
My Note 5 dream / hopes therefore are less about hardware and more about software.

I wish Samsung would truly go back to the scratch and rebuild Touchwiz from the ground up. HTC / SONY devices have just as many features / bells and whistles and don't use anything like as much resources standing still. That speaks volumes.

I can only drool at how amazing performance on the S6 / S6 Edge would have been had they really had an optimised OS. The octo-core exynos & DDR 4 with a device with stock android level of ram usage (and you don't have to sacrifice features to get this as the M8 & M9 prove) would make an amazing combination.
My Note 4 with lollipop is faster and has better battery life than my Nexus 6. It also offers a better user experience and better camera. The Nexus 6 uses less ram than the Note 4 but that does not translate to a better user experience. Then TW offers more options than vanilla android does. Simple little things like a battery meter that displays text so you can see how much battery life is left. I don't understand how such a useful thing could be left out.
The S6 is easily the fastest most responsive phone I have ever used. TW is toned down a little more on the S6 but it could still use a little more trimming. But then it offers so many more features than vanilla android has.
For me personally I use Nova on all my Android phones. So it doesn't matter anyways.
I can't wait to see what the Note 5 has to offer!!

Couldn't disagree with you more. TW makes these phones horrifically bad. Nexus/iPhone/Moto X are probably the best on the market at this time.
Depends what you want out of your phone. IPhone is the best in terms of smoothness but in terms of the whole package I don't think it compares overall to what the note brings.

I have been using nova but due to bad battery life I decided to switch back to touchwiz with a few less widgets and it's a lot better.

I wasn't even getting more than 16 hours total before and now I'm back over 1 day with almost 4 hours screen time when I was on 3 hours screen time before

You weren't able to isolate whether it was Nova or a particular widget ? You could always introduce the previous widgets a couple at a time until you find the issue arising again. If it doesn't you will be able to put it down to Nova (though I'd be surprised if it was Nova tbh)

In fairness when I have a spare battery I'm not sure why I'm too bothered suddenly with battery life. Not like it's a huge issue

I wonder if there was an difference between the N4 international models and battery life and the lollipop update?

i'm quite confused now

i switched to nova this morning and the battery drained quicker than just using TW and it got so damn laggy..i clicked on music and it took a good 5-6 secs to respond so i have swited back to TW..not sure why this is happening.

I really can't see it staying. The S6 was a success (but not a 6S), so I can see the Note 4 following in its footsteps.
i hope so as i do love the S6 build..i havn't really used the spare lately.

rumour has it the note will have alot bigger battery than it has now.

True, but I can see it being worse battery life anyway if they add the 4K screen. Let's hope that they don't.

My N4 on lollipop is a nightmare, apps take seconds to open, it crashes (occasionally not very often though), app selector takes 5+ seconds to load. Some apps behave very weirdly. Waze will often open into a completely black screen, I have to force shut if off once or twice for it to work. The camera app takes a long time to load, and even longer to switch to gallery. Sometimes it gets stuck in the lock screen and doesn't want to turn on. The fingerprint sensor sometime works great, other times I can swipe 10+ more times and it won't recognize. Don't even get me started on GPS, 7 (seven) different phones all with faulty GPS.Battery life I also see a degradation, quite a bit.

Still though, I love the phone beyond measure. But I'd say I think about replacing it daily, it might be a tough call when the MotoX 2015 comes out.

What a nightmare! How many Note 4s did you end up replacing? Did they all have the same issues?

Strange for Nova to cause issue. Are you using latest Nova beta or the older version ?

That was my experience with lollipop on both the Alpha & Note 4. plus even then thats with the good lollipop update on the Note 4 - not the first German DBT lollipop build they pushed out which was just horrific for me.

That can occasionally happen on TW. Easiest way I found to correct it was to pop into settings / home and choose there. Seems to stick then.

Also stupid question. Have you rebooted your phone at all ? Reason i ask is - could it be your phone is running is safe mode and this could explain poor peformance / or the continued request for home selection ? (mind if it was running in safe mode some devices display the wording on bottom left so your unlikely to not notice).

Yeah I've been into settings but no luck.

Getting pressing home button and power button together might help?

How about uninstalling Nova so you only have one launcher. Then clean/wipe your cache partition in the system recovery. Then download Nova fresh.

Worth a try

Where do you go to clear cache?

Where do you go to clear cache?

Go into system recovery which is with device turned off. Press and hold power down and volume up. then in system recovery scroll with volume key to wipe cache partition and press power button to confirm.

Then use volume key to reboot device - power to again confirm.

--

  1. Turn off the Galaxy Note 4 completely.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home keys together, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Note 4 vibrates, release both the Home and Power keys but continue holding the Volume Up key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery shows on the screen, release the Vol Up key.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option ‘wipe cache partition’ and press the Power key to select it.
  6. When the wiping of the cache partition is finished, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the power key.
